To not know what to do with syd the spider

Syd has been resident in my kitchen for at least 6 months now and she's been very welcome, she's never moved , she doesn't drop on my head , she eats all my undesirables.

But today syd has laid eggs . She has is tending her egg sac like an amazing mummy . But I'm a little freaked at the thought of hundreds of mini syds emerging into my kitchen . She's tending her babies like a queen . She's protective and I haven't the heart to hoover the egg sac up.

Dear Mumsnet, what do I do ?

I thought Syd was going to be a spindly but I see she is not. However, based on my observations with spindlies having babies (at one point I had 5 with egg sacs which was a little unnerving), it turns out most of the offspring just don't survive, I suppose not enough food? So I wouldn't worry about having hundreds of them, it's unlikely most will survive. And those who do will just wander a little further away, at which point you should be able to gently remove them to the garden or shed or wherever you want!

I think maybe Syd will die now, like in Charlotte’s Web, and one of her daughters take over, and the others will disperse. I’ve noticed my own Syd is gone and a tiny replica is in her place this morning- this suggests that she reproduced, but I never noticed! There aren’t hundreds of little spiders

Aww, well done Syd. I wouldn't worry, op. The proud mum will probably eat any that don't leg it quick enough. (Imagine if there was an MN for spiders: "DS says he wants a gap year before uni -WIBU to scoff him?"

Just been googling spider dispersal and have now read the lovely term 'spiderlings' enough times for me to start imagining that the little scuttlers are cute rather than the stuff of nightmares.

This made me laugh! We need spidernet 😂
