To think it's more difficult/less common to conceive a girl?

I just found out today my second baby is a boy. Still over the moon of course, but have that feeling that one of each would have been lovely.

Lots of couples I know have boys and more than one at that. And they have gone on to try for another just to have a girl. There's not many people I know who have DD's. My DH is also 1 of 3 boys.

AIBU to think girls are in the minority?

Yes YABU. Otherwise there would be more men than women (there are not!).

drspouse · 23/10/2023 20:57

Only by about half a percent. Otherwise the world would be a bit stuck with no babies in the future!

PurplePansy05 · 23/10/2023 20:58

OP, in the kindest possible way, I think it's the hormones 😂

Congratulations on your baby boy!

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 23/10/2023 20:59

When I had my baby the closest 3 friends I made in postnatal all had girls. They then all had second girls.

LindorDoubleChoc · 23/10/2023 20:59

I just googled and in 2016 to 2020 there were 105 males born to every 100 females. So, yes more males are born but the population is predominantly female because females live longer.

VickyEadieofThigh · 23/10/2023 20:59

The male sperms determines the sex of the child.

Approximately 51% of the population is female.

Somanycats · 23/10/2023 21:00

Yup you are right. More boys than girls are born. I'm reading 105 boys for every 100 girls.

Pradder · 23/10/2023 21:00

Almost everyone I know has girls, that’s just how randomness works, some people will know roughly equal numbers of baby girls and boys too.

If you tossed a coin twice and got tails twice would you think it was rigged? Maybe if you got tails 20 times you would , but no-one ever has enough kids these days to get that much data!

sunshineandshowers40 · 23/10/2023 21:00

Isn't around 50/50. I know a lot of boy families but I think that's because I have boys, I also know lots of families that have all girls (be it 1,2 or 3).

DanaBarrett · 23/10/2023 21:00

Honestly, I wish our family could conceive a boy! My brother is the only one in three generations.

bmrising · 23/10/2023 21:00

I know the statistics are there etc, just in my circle and people I know don't seem to conceive girls! I know lots who have more than one DS

GreyhpundGirl · 23/10/2023 21:01

No, the mysterious mother nature ensures the world population is pretty much 50:50.

mynameiscalypso · 23/10/2023 21:01

I think it's 51:49 in favour of boys so not really a huge difference. For what it's worth, my DS is one of 6 cousins and is the only boy.

WithOneLook · 23/10/2023 21:01

Statistically, IVF pregnancies are slightly more likely to be boys than girls. This is understood to be because male embryos develop slightly faster than female ones and the doctors naturally choose the ones that look the 'healthiest'/most developed at day 3/5/6. It really is a small discrepancy though.

BHRK · 23/10/2023 21:02

This has made me laugh. No, it’s pretty even really

bmrising · 23/10/2023 21:02

It's predominantly boys in my DH's family, apart from his mother and grandmother there is only 1 other girl

Latenightreader · 23/10/2023 21:02

In our NCT group there were five girls and one boy. Of the six mothers, three now have other children - one boy and three girls. The two friends who are pregnant are both carrying girls, and the colleague who had a baby recently had a girl. I was wondering recently where were all the baby boys!

Poblano · 23/10/2023 21:02

Anecdote is not the plural of data...

However, you are correct in that slightly more boys than girls are born each year https://ourworldindata.org/gender-ratio

Gender Ratio

How does the number of men and women differ between countries? And why?

bmrising · 23/10/2023 21:02

@BHRK I know it is but it doesn't seem it 😂

theduchessofspork · 23/10/2023 21:02

There are about 105 boys born for every 100 girls, and I think that’s pretty consistent everywhere. The theory is it’s because men keel over before they produce offspring more than women. Which can perhaps still be true given there are more women than men in the UK - although WW there are more men.

junbean · 23/10/2023 21:04

Yes there are more males born than females and it's always been this way. Google it.

Coffeerum · 23/10/2023 21:05

Obviously YABU.

89redballoons · 23/10/2023 21:05

I have two sons, my husband is one of two sons, in my family on my mum's side the cousins are five girls and one boy.

Of the families I know who have more than one DC, most seem to have either all girls or all boys. I can only think of three families that I know personally with 1+ boy and 1+ girl. Mind you, most families I know only have one or two children. I guess the odds of having at least one of each get higher the more children you have.

MangoGuavaDelta · 23/10/2023 21:06

I find people who have 3 DC normally (around me) always have 2 boys and a girl, so from that perspective you are probably right.

Neodymium · 23/10/2023 21:06

i have 2 boys and a girl, my sister has 3 girls and a boy and my other sister has 3 girls. I think it just depends. I think some males are more likely to have girls and some more likely to have boys.
