To think it's more difficult/less common to conceive a girl?

I just found out today my second baby is a boy. Still over the moon of course, but have that feeling that one of each would have been lovely.

Lots of couples I know have boys and more than one at that. And they have gone on to try for another just to have a girl. There's not many people I know who have DD's. My DH is also 1 of 3 boys.

AIBU to think girls are in the minority?

The last male to be born in my family is now 77 years old...all girls ever since!

ginandtonicwithlimes · 23/10/2023 22:43

Isn't it more stress equals more girls whereas eating better and no war etc equals more boys?

Dramatic · 23/10/2023 22:44

It's just one of those random things, I have 5 girls 🤷

ginandtonicwithlimes · 23/10/2023 22:46

One of seven-one boy and six girls. I have one of each. There are 9 boys and two girl grandchildren.

mrsmacmc · 23/10/2023 22:52

My aunt always said if there is a run of boys then there's a war in the air.

Another one that was trotted out when DD was born was that DH was a 'real man' as only 'real men' can parent girls 🤨 that got a massive eye roll from me!

Our NCT group had 2 girls and 6 boys born recently.

bmrising · 23/10/2023 22:54

@Mavissdaviss How many girls do you have?

Hipnotised · 23/10/2023 23:13

@bmrising my DH was also one of three boys, we had two boys and our third was a girl...

Dramatic · 23/10/2023 23:18

Actually we are surrounded by girls, as well as our 5 girls, I have one sister, DH has 2 sisters, we have 4 nieces, I have two aunties, as does DH. We do have 3 male cousins between us as well as 3 female cousins. But yeah, we are a very girl-heavy family

So how come 51% of the population are female?

Because on average women live longer than men.

Pumpkinpuddin · 23/10/2023 23:24

Yeah think 105 boys to 100 girls. I know what you mean though. I feel often families have lots of one sex, and I don't come across families that have a fair split very often!

Just seems you get boy heavy and girl heavy families!

I only have 1 friend with one of each.

abc56 · 23/10/2023 23:25

Not sure I'd agree with you op, I'v got 4 girls.

thaegumathteth · 23/10/2023 23:39

My dc have 6 cousins. 4 are girls and 2 are boys. (I have one of each)

When I think about it I don't actually know that many families who have more than one gender. A few but the majority have all boys or all girls I think.

Dd was the first girl to be born into dh's dads side of the family in 110 years! Just luck of the draw though.

I've read that once you have one sex child the odds of having another of the same sex increases each time. Can't remember how much by though or when I read this, maybe it's been debunked since!

BitofaStramash · 23/10/2023 23:46

All these anecdotes are nice but the premise that one sex is harder to conceive than the other is obviously not correct

Airyfairy99 · 23/10/2023 23:47

Nope iv 3 girls ,1 boy .......

Fionaville · 23/10/2023 23:48

My daughters primary school class of ten, was all girls! (In a mixed sex school) It's just how it worked out that year.

I just googled and in 2016 to 2020 there were 105 males born to every 100 females. So, yes more males are born but the population is predominantly female because females live longer.

That's more born.

That's different to being conceived.

The difference is bigger in other countries - for a rather disturbing reason.

Madwife123 · 23/10/2023 23:52

It’s random.

Me and my sister used to laugh about swapping a child as I had 3 girls and she had 4 boys.

For every person who has lots of boys someone else has lots of girls. It’s just the way odds work out.

icallitasplodge · 23/10/2023 23:53

I was about to post returning soldier effect too. More sex = more boys!

Ilovecakey · 23/10/2023 23:55

I have 2 boys and 3 girls

Mumsgirls · 23/10/2023 23:56

We have three generations of girls . From me at 66 too dcg 3.,so far 9 girls born 0 boys

I've heard that too, once you have two of one sex the odds are 75% your 3rd will be same sex.
But it might just be an old wife's tale.

Mumsgirls · 23/10/2023 23:59

Randomness of nine to 0 in my family seems too much. I am convinced science will give an answer. So far we have no pattern, younger and older parents , so not that

Sugarfree23 · 24/10/2023 00:02

Stats say 105 boys to 100 girls.
One theory is Boys are more likely to die young in stupid accidents. I've also heard girls are more likely to survive SCBU than boys.

Anyone know if animals have similar ratios? Like more male lambs, puppies or kittens than female?

Pure curiosity

blushroses6 · 24/10/2023 00:02

I’m pretty sure it’s random although for most people I know, the dads siblings seem to indicate whether his children are boys or girls/ the order. A couple of men I know with two sisters, have two daughters for example. Or if he has an older brother and sister, he’ll go on to have a son first then a daughter. I’m not saying there is any science behind it but it’s just something i’ve noticed.
