To recline my seat in the airplane tonight ?

We are flying from Boston and Dh told me I’m not allowed to recline my seat on our night flight ? We are on economy and flying with BA. I don’t fly often so not sure about the etiquette. I mean if it was a day flight I wouldn’t recline but a night one ? Everyone would want to ?

But you do realise that's very uncomfortable for the person behind you during the day?

This one thousand times. Ug!

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 24/10/2023 09:08

This is so timely. I flew back from Boston last weekend in BA premium Economy. Reclined my seat after dinner and when the cabin lights went down. The woman behind me apparently objected to this and after a while got hold of the back of my seat and pushed it back and forth extremely hard. I woke in surprise wondering what the hell was going on and apparently she wanted to go to the toilet but decided to bash my seat was preferable to just tapping me on the shoulder. She then called a cabin crew member over to complain vociferously that I had her ‘trapped’ in her seat even though I had put my seat upright to let her out. CCM told her very firmly that people were allowed to recline and that she wasn’t prepared to tell me not to. Cue much grumbling and many dirty looks when we disembarked. Apparently she was going to contact the BA CEO.

I would, in this order. Ditch the bloke, upgrade to business. But generally, if you choose to fly long haul economy, you choose to be uncomfortable so it serves you right to be uncomfortable for being tight. The husband however, nobody should be telling other people what they are and are not allowed to do.

Hats off to the CCM….quite right.

What I have just read?

You do realise not everyone can afford to upgrade?

Valerianandfoxglovesoup · 24/10/2023 09:30

If you can't afford it then you put up with it. But not the man. Its not that much to upgrade, hundreds rather than thousands. If you are already flying, albeit on BA, you aren't exactly on the breadline wondering how you will eat!

When was the last time you flew long haul?
It's not in the hundreds anymore..... not to upgrade to business.

I flew 2 weeks ago and an upgrade to premium economy was £400 which really isn't worth it. To upgrade to business was £2k

Valerianandfoxglovesoup · 24/10/2023 10:10

I flew Doha to London in September, upgrade was £800 per way for my colleague when paying at the airport with Qatar Airways from economy to QSuite. So hundreds. Hence my assumption.

Not everyone has that kind of spare money. £800 per trip is not cheap.

I often fly via Doha on my way to Asia so to upgrade all my flights, even at that price, would be into thousands!!

Most people save for these types of trips,

I'd love to know which airline offers that deal. It's usually at least three times the economy price for business class. Even economy premium is expensive.

Also, air miles aren't so generous anymore. You need a lot more points than you would 6 years ago.

Valerianandfoxglovesoup · 24/10/2023 11:10

Qatar Airways is always around £8-900 at the airport, has been for years. Sometimes a thousand from Heathrow. My husband refuses to book business so always upgrades that way, he flies around once every 6 weeks. I can't face the uncertainty so just book the flight I want, I hate flying.

Interesting. I fly with Qatar at least five times a year, and the price they quote to upgrade at the airport has always been much more. I'll have to try again when I fly in February with them.

Valerianandfoxglovesoup · 24/10/2023 11:19

I don't understand it. The desk is in a little alcove to the right of the teddy. But if you have the app, they send you the offer about a week before. Its usually around 4k riyals and seems to change with the exchange rate. I have a QA credit card and literally every payment on there is a 4000 QR upgrade fee for my husbands upgrades. I always pay so I get the Avios which I spend elsewhere.

Valerianandfoxglovesoup · 24/10/2023 11:21

The desk at Heathrow is right at the end next to the business check in. Its usually packed and boiling hot there so best to do on the app. And if you ever have a stopover and want a guide, I am happy to show you round, there are some lovely places to visit in Doha, especially the new museums.

I have the app, and nothing comes through. I occasionally get an email to upgrade from my destination to Doha for an inflated price but never to the destination.

I'm only silver. If you're gold status maybe you get better offers?

Valerianandfoxglovesoup · 24/10/2023 12:21

Maybe I inadvertently pleased the upgrade gods 😀

Isthisasgoodasitis · 24/10/2023 15:15

The person behind me could have booked business ….. my spine is my concern so the seat like my car is adjusted to suit it

Bellie710 · 24/10/2023 15:16

I was on a flight last week someone across from us reclined their seat and the man behind tried to stop him, the stewardess came over and told him to leave the seat alone and recline his own seat if he had no space, he spent most of the flight with his own seat upright pushing against the seat.

The problem with people saying you shouldn't recline on a day flight is that some people have been travelling long haul and their connecting flights are hours after they originally started travelling so they are exhausted.
Be courteous to the person behind you and it doesn't matter what time of the day you recline.

JuliaLilian · 24/10/2023 15:27

Personally I always recline mine a small amount too if I can. Very uncomfortable for short people like me otherwise, as the head rest pushes your head forward.
Besides everyone had the option so the people behind can do it too if they prefer.

2jacqi · 24/10/2023 15:30

if your seat reclines, then recline it!!

BodegaSushi · 24/10/2023 15:34

Wolfiefan · 23/10/2023 13:03

I generally recline my seat whether it’s day or night. That’s because I have a health issue that causes constant pain.

Hope the person behind you doesn't have it as well.

TravelInHope · 24/10/2023 15:46

Dwappy · 23/10/2023 13:04

Why doesn't everyone just do it during the day flight then? Its not like it takes you flat or anything and you can't see the screen or read etc. Its about 2 inches difference. If someone in front reclines, and you recline as well you have the same space. So whether it's day or night just everyone recline then no one can moan. I avoid planes unless i have no choice so this argument doesn't particularly affect me. But I never understand why people get so upset over 2 inches when they can just go back as well to reclaim them. I've also happily in the past eaten my dinner off my tray with the person in front reclined. I barely noticed any difference.

What I hate is when the person in front suddenly slams their seat back ad hard as they can. Last flight I was holding a glass of wine. I was very tempted to pour what didn’t go over me right over their entitled head.

AnneValentine · 24/10/2023 15:59

ActDottie · 23/10/2023 13:30

This! Seat recliners on short flights are so inconsiderate

Conversely those who expect me not to are.

Lostthewilltolive1970 · 24/10/2023 16:03

I flew to Orlando recently. Day flight going, night flight coming back.
Didn't recline coming home through the night, but on the outbound journey I simply asked the person behind if they minded. They didn't so no issue.

Wolfiefan · 24/10/2023 17:28

@BodegaSushi if you had read further you’d have seen that in that case I hope they would speak to me and we could work out what made the flight tolerable for us both. I won’t sit in agony in an upright seat in case the person behind me is also disabled.
