To recline my seat in the airplane tonight ?

We are flying from Boston and Dh told me I’m not allowed to recline my seat on our night flight ? We are on economy and flying with BA. I don’t fly often so not sure about the etiquette. I mean if it was a day flight I wouldn’t recline but a night one ? Everyone would want to ?

Of course you should recline your seat on a night flight!! Everyone else will be doing the same!

Maddy70 · 23/10/2023 12:53

Of course you can. Thats why you have the ability to recline them

MolkosTeenageAngst · 23/10/2023 12:56

I always recline my seat even on a day flight, it’s much more comfortable for me reclined. Obviously when the food arrives you should put it back up so the person behind can use their tray, but otherwise it’s fine to recline. What would be the point in the airline putting in reclining seats if you weren’t ever actually able to use them!?

MaggieFS · 23/10/2023 12:57

Of course it's fine. Just put it up for meals.

But you do realise that's very uncomfortable for the person behind you during the day?

BibbleandSqwauk · 23/10/2023 12:58

On a night flight, after the food has been served and cleared and they've dimmed the lights, totally. I sat in front of some bell end who was so affronted by this he kept shoving my seat with his knees ..like hard, on purpose, not just moving his legs around and the odd knock. Stupid thing is, if he'd politely asked if I'd mind not reclining I probably would have said ok but he was such a PA twat I pushed back.

It’s fine, the person behind you will most likely want to try sleep and do the same.

CacenCaws · 23/10/2023 12:59

At night its fine. I should think most people would recline. How come DH tells you what you're 'allowed' to do though? who put him in charge?

That is so rude!

It's fine for a night flight because everyone does it. In a day flight you're making the person behind you very uncomfortable.

Some people are just cheeky fuckers!

Most of the newer short and medium haul narrowbody seats no longer recline, which stops this entitled screw you in the seat behind behaviour.

On a night flight of course it's ok, and expected that you'll recline your seat.

So whose comfort wins? Is the person behind more important?

Wolfiefan · 23/10/2023 13:03

I generally recline my seat whether it’s day or night. That’s because I have a health issue that causes constant pain.

WhateverMate · 23/10/2023 13:03

Why wouldn't you just ask the person behind you if they're ok with it OP?

Coldinscotland · 23/10/2023 13:03

Will dh be instructing you the whole trip?

AsWrittenBy · 23/10/2023 13:03

Check person behind you doesn't have a laptop/Tablet up before reclining

Why doesn't everyone just do it during the day flight then? Its not like it takes you flat or anything and you can't see the screen or read etc. Its about 2 inches difference. If someone in front reclines, and you recline as well you have the same space. So whether it's day or night just everyone recline then no one can moan. I avoid planes unless i have no choice so this argument doesn't particularly affect me. But I never understand why people get so upset over 2 inches when they can just go back as well to reclaim them. I've also happily in the past eaten my dinner off my tray with the person in front reclined. I barely noticed any difference.

IncompleteSenten · 23/10/2023 13:04

You're not "allowed"?
He actually said that?
I'd recline just for that tbh. Who does he think he is?

It's a night flight. Reclining is fine. It's why the seats recline!

icantchangetime · 23/10/2023 12:57

It's the same for teh person behind as long as they recline theirs too

Nothingbuttheglory · 23/10/2023 13:05

If you weren't meant to recline them, they wouldn't recline.

FallingAutumnLeaf · 23/10/2023 13:05

I recline on day flights too if required.

When I leave home at midnight, drive to airport, check in do a 2 hour flight, then get on a long haul flight at 6am, I'm fit for nothing but sleep. Might be your day flight, but I desperately need sleep by that point.

BlowDryRat · 23/10/2023 13:06

Totally normal on a long-haul night flight. Just make sure you put the seat up fully for take off, landing and meal service.

Greatbigfluffytrousers · 23/10/2023 13:07

I’ve just flown back from New York in a night flight, I don’t think the seats in economy reclined. Wasn’t BA though.

Didimum · 23/10/2023 13:07

Why is your DH telling you what to do?

jiinglebells · 23/10/2023 13:08

If you're in a seat that reclines, then the feature is made to be used! On a night flight especially I'd expect people to be using it.

Don't recline until after the meal and make sure the person behind you has had the tray cleared! And if they've got a laptop out perhaps give them a heads up so it doesn't get shut / bashed.

Be aware that if you have a tall person behind you then you might struggle to actually recline it. We once got "told off" by the lady in front of us who accused my husband of using his knees to block her from reclining. He explained that he couldn't make his legs any smaller, she then called him a liar until he stood up 😂 our last time flying economy (unfortunately didn't have a seat choice due to last minute nature of the trip).
