To recline my seat in the airplane tonight ?

We are flying from Boston and Dh told me I’m not allowed to recline my seat on our night flight ? We are on economy and flying with BA. I don’t fly often so not sure about the etiquette. I mean if it was a day flight I wouldn’t recline but a night one ? Everyone would want to ?

But you do realise that's very uncomfortable for the person behind you during the day?

Fuck another person’s comfort, she’s paid for her seat 🙄

WonderingWanda · 23/10/2023 13:38

I think you need to inform your dh he is not allowed to tell you what to do because he is not your owner or father.

Make your own decision at the time op. Everytime I've flown at night everyone has reclined both in front and behind me so it often not a problem. If your dh wants to martyr himself then let him get on with it.

AtrociousCircumstance · 23/10/2023 13:39

I tend to think people who recline are selfish wankers. But maybe a night flight where everyone is reclining could be ok.

IncompleteSenten · 23/10/2023 13:04

You're not "allowed"?
He actually said that?
I'd recline just for that tbh. Who does he think he is?

It's a night flight. Reclining is fine. It's why the seats recline!

Yes

DivingForLove · 23/10/2023 13:40

It depends how far you recline! I was on a flight once where the twat in front fully reclined her seat into my lap so I couldn’t move. Dickhead.

ILostMyself · 23/10/2023 13:41

Okay on a night flight, after dinner has been served/collected and once the lights dim. Then back up again when the lights come up for breakfast. I had someone recline on me from the moment we were in the air throughout a 10 hour flight. Was so claustrophobic and awkward to eat.

People who recline outside of sleeping time are why I hate flying economy! They get a tiny bit of extra comfort but the person behind’s comfort is massively affected (and no I won’t recline on the person behind me because I think it’s rude). I really wish short haul flights didn’t recline and I know some airlines have started doing that.

Why doesn't everyone just do it during the day flight then? Its not like it takes you flat or anything and you can't see the screen or read etc. Its about 2 inches difference. If someone in front reclines, and you recline as well you have the same space. So whether it's day or night just everyone recline then no one can moan. I avoid planes unless i have no choice so this argument doesn't particularly affect me. But I never understand why people get so upset over 2 inches when they can just go back as well to reclaim them. I've also happily in the past eaten my dinner off my tray with the person in front reclined. I barely noticed any difference.

No everyone doesnt do it - because not everyone is a selfish arsehole.

I dont want to recline, I dont want to lose the space in front of me, and I dont want to inconvenience the person behind me

Only fucking arseholes recline on a day flight

Gnomegnomegnome · 23/10/2023 13:41

Why not wait until you are on the plane and then decide rather than overthink it (you and your Dh).

DivingForLove · 23/10/2023 13:41

I have long legs so the person in front can’t recline much at all before they’re on my knees - of course that’s not ok. Some people are so selfish 🙄

Natbro · 23/10/2023 13:42

planes have very limited space on them as it is so when you recline you make the person behind you very uncomfortable. I think most people know its bad manners but unfortunately some people only think of themselves.

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 23/10/2023 13:42

Anyone who reclines into me, day or night, gets regular thumps in the back. Oops. It's so selfish!

Dwappy · 23/10/2023 13:18

Why is it only selfish during the day? I don't sleep on planes (im terrified and uncomfortable most of the time) so if they person in front of me reclines I'd be doing exactly the same thing at night as I would in the day time. Watching film or reading etc. So why are they apparently selfish for disturbing my TV watching during the day but not at night? (I don't think it's selfish at all and despite being quite tall I don't care if someone reclines in front of me. I just recline myself and have the same space again).

Its a majority rule type of thing here. Its a night flight so most people will be trying to sleep

HoppingPavlova · 23/10/2023 13:45

That’s fine for a night flight after meal service had been cleared. The problem with reclining is once one person does it then everyone else behind must do it unless they want to become a piece of human origami, it’s a domino effect.

Of a day it’s pretty unforgivable but a night it’s okay as then the whole plane will cascade back in recline.

Wolfiefan · 23/10/2023 13:45

Jeez. The attitude on here. So someone with a health condition like me should suffer rather than recline their seat?

Soontobe60 · 23/10/2023 13:45

icantchangetime · 23/10/2023 12:57

But you do realise that's very uncomfortable for the person behind you during the day?

How?
I’ve never been uncomfortable when the seat in front of me reclines.
The trays and TVs are designed so that they are still flat. The only problem would be if you’re large, which I am, need to get up. In which case, I ask them to put their seat up whilst I get out.

AtrociousCircumstance · 23/10/2023 13:39

I Tend to think people who judge passengers who recline their seats are judgemental tossers!

SagittariusDwarf · 23/10/2023 13:47

I agree with @Soontobe60 ; I too have never been affected by a seat in front of me reclining, and I'm 5'9 with long legs so not exactly tiny.

I think it's totally fine to use the functionality offered by the seat.

TolkiensFallow · 23/10/2023 13:47

You partner is going to be the only person sat bolt upright on that flight.

AtrociousCircumstance · 23/10/2023 13:48

😂

Dorisbonson · 23/10/2023 13:48

I fly a lot, almost twice a week short haul and couple of times a month long haul. I absolutely hate people who recline seats during day flights - inconsiderate and rude. It's one of the most annoying and selfish things people can do. I don't want to watch a movie with the screen next to my nose - equally I don't want to recline my seat and replicate the problem for someone else because you happen to be a rude asshole.

Really?

So bad that people think this is ok

Exactly this. I don't understand people saying "the person in front reclined so much they were in my lap!!". How??? Every plane I've been on when I've reclined my seat Ive barely moved! It's a few inches! It's not like the chair goes fully flat! I hardly notice any difference when the person in front of me reclines. It doesn't affect my TV watching or anything else. At the most it might affect getting out for the loo.

CrazyHamsterLady · 23/10/2023 13:49

I was really worried about this on our recent flight from Orlando to London, it was also a night flight. Luckily, the person in front of me was very considerate and only reclined slightly so I reclined slightly to get comfortable and was also mindful of the person behind me. DH Was so lucky as he had no-one behind him so could go as far back as he liked!

In essence, try to get yourself comfortable but don’t take the piss and recline too far. Hopefully it’ll all work out.

SagittariusDwarf · 23/10/2023 13:49

Indeed! So childish!

The screen isn't next to your nose.
