Tween Horror Film Recommendations 👻

Hi all,

Posting for traffic on actually scary films I can show my tween this spooky season.

I have an almost 13 year old who is horror obsessed. Naturally disappointed that they can't see the new FNAF movie in the cinema, having played all of the games...

We've watched the usual tween horrors, Goosebumps, Are You Afraid Of The Dark?, Creeped Out, Just Beyond, Monster House, Wednesday etc...

The problem is, these just aren't scary enough in my kid's book. They really want something that's going to scare them.

We've watched a couple of 15s together, such as Willy's Wonderland (great if you have a FNAF fan who can't see it in the cinema) and A Quiet Place 1&2 and Slenderman so am not too strict on the ratings.

Just looking for some films/series that are scarier than your average tween offering, but aren't going to require years of therapy after!

Thanks in advance for any and all recommendations. 🎃👻

Scream? Carrie? Final destination?

Paranormal Activity?

Both my two teens love a horror, Hereditary is a 15 but I reckon it’s more like an 18.

Old school

The Hole
the Faculty
Sean of the Dead

EsmeSusanOgg · 21/10/2023 19:52

The Craft (first film from the 90s, not the sequel).

cannaecookrisotto · 21/10/2023 20:01

Haunting of Hill House.

I've watched it three times since it came out, so good and eerie too!

commonground · 21/10/2023 20:04

Have you seen The Woman in Black? Came out as a 12A but I thought it was really quite terrifying.

The Craft (first film from the 90s, not the sequel).

Yesss love this film

Fionaville · 21/10/2023 20:08

We've just watched the new Haunted mansion on Disney. It was really good (although not that scary!)
I think the Scream movies are OK for 13. Purely because the 'baddie' isn't that scary, so not as likely to give nightmares.
Final destination for the same reason.

FunkyMonks · 21/10/2023 20:10

13 ghost is good
Ghost ship
Club dread
I know what you did last summer

FunkyMonks · 21/10/2023 20:11

Fear street is good on Netflix three movies the first two are really good third is ok

AlexaCanYouHearMe · 21/10/2023 20:11

Blair Witch Project! Creepy and spooky. It's a 15 certificate, but IMO, it's not inappropriate for 11-14 year olds. (IMO.) Some swearing in it though. I am on about the 1999 version, not the 2016 one. Smile

commonground · 21/10/2023 20:12

The Hole (2009) is the 12A film, 'teen' friendly (but actually v scary)

(the 2001 The Hole - a different film - is a 15).

cannaecookrisotto · 21/10/2023 20:01

Haunting of Hill House.

This is clucking brilliant!

ghostyslovesheets · 21/10/2023 20:12

Warm Bodies (Romeo and Juliet with Zombies)
Gremlins - proper scared my 3!

FunkyMonks · 21/10/2023 20:13

Love the gremlins and the 2nd one 😊

AlexaCanYouHearMe · 21/10/2023 20:14

The Maze Runner is good too. I think that may be a 12 certificate.

commonground · 21/10/2023 20:15

Also, House at the End of the Street with Jennifer Lawrence. Is a PG 13 I think. My kids enjoyed being freaked out by that - jump scares.

mrsfollowill · 21/10/2023 20:17

Final Destination films are fine for that age with that mindset (not good for sensitive souls!) I watched these with my nephew when he was 13 then later with my own DS when he was the same age. Also what about the original 'Halloween' it's more suspense than anything and edge of the seat stuff. Yes to the Scream films and Shaun of the Dead is hilarious and most 12/13yo would love it. The Worlds End is good in a weird funny way as well.

Greenqueen40 · 21/10/2023 20:17

I think I must be out of touch a bit as there is no way I would let my 11yr old watch the Scream films🙄

Chimchar · 21/10/2023 20:21

Lost Boys? Haven't seen it for years but I recall there being a lot of humour and not too much gore but a few scary moments.

EsmeSusanOgg · 21/10/2023 20:36

Lost Boys is a good shout.

Flamingogirl08 · 21/10/2023 20:38

I'm not sure what rating it is but Insidious is creepy. My 13 year old watched it no problem and got a nice scare, I'm pretty lax on ratings. I just stay away from things that have a lot of sexual content.

I'm sure some people will be horrified but she would laugh if I suggested goosebumps as a scary film 🤣

reelcat · 21/10/2023 20:46

Shaun of the Dead
Stranger things
Gremlins 1 and 2
The burbs
Lock and Key

scoobydoo1971 · 21/10/2023 20:50

My 12 year old liked Sleepy Hollow.

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 21/10/2023 20:53

The Craft definitely.

Not the original Halloween! I know it isn’t graphic in terms of actual detail of stabbing etc but it’s absolutely inappropriate- firstly it’s about little kids and teen babysitters and absolute, mindless violence. But it also has a lot of sex, naked murdered bodies and full frontal nudity…

Edward Scissorhands? Beetlejuice? The sixth sense. Arachnophobia

BashfulClam · 21/10/2023 20:58

Definitely The Craft and The Haunting (the 1963 version not the abysmal Catherine Zeta Jobes abomination)
