Tween Horror Film Recommendations 👻

Hi all,

Posting for traffic on actually scary films I can show my tween this spooky season.

I have an almost 13 year old who is horror obsessed. Naturally disappointed that they can't see the new FNAF movie in the cinema, having played all of the games...

We've watched the usual tween horrors, Goosebumps, Are You Afraid Of The Dark?, Creeped Out, Just Beyond, Monster House, Wednesday etc...

The problem is, these just aren't scary enough in my kid's book. They really want something that's going to scare them.

We've watched a couple of 15s together, such as Willy's Wonderland (great if you have a FNAF fan who can't see it in the cinema) and A Quiet Place 1&2 and Slenderman so am not too strict on the ratings.

Just looking for some films/series that are scarier than your average tween offering, but aren't going to require years of therapy after!

Thanks in advance for any and all recommendations. 🎃👻

Pirates of the Caribbean? Lots of ghost-ship type stuff in that

I assume you've seen the Harry Potter/ Fantastic Beasts ones.

There was an Owl Service movie.

Little Shop of Horrors?

Addams family? Coraline?

Labyrinth? Princess Bride? Goonies? Corpse Bride? Nightmare before Christmas?

We quite like fantastical stuff but don't want our kids watching truly horrific things.

purpleme12 · 21/10/2023 21:20

It's not horror but have they seen The Others?

Notfeelinghunkydory · 21/10/2023 21:22

I don't really do horrors but love Scream and Saw. Both not really scary just gory and the villains attire isn't scary so i think ok for 13/14 year olds!
Freaky is a good one

tiglit · 21/10/2023 21:32

We (13 year old and I) tend to avoid anything with sex and slashers, we stick to horror. We've watched; Sixth Sense, Signs, The Village, The Others, Quiet Place 1&2, The Ring 1&2, Poltergeist, Haunting of Hill House, Bly Manor, Stranger Things.

The only thing we've watched which I regretted was The Woman in Black, that was scarier than I remembered!

Wondering if Paranormal Activity would be worth a go, can't remember how scary they were!"

tiglit · 21/10/2023 21:33

Oh yes Blair Witch was good too. Oh and the Cloverfield series.

The Craft definitely.

Not the original Halloween! I know it isn’t graphic in terms of actual detail of stabbing etc but it’s absolutely inappropriate- firstly it’s about little kids and teen babysitters and absolute, mindless violence. But it also has a lot of sex, naked murdered bodies and full frontal nudity…

Edward Scissorhands? Beetlejuice? The sixth sense. Arachnophobia

Actually I was about to Suggest the Original Halloween as it contains quite little gore and is more suspense based ,
my teen n preteen have seen it
lost boys
the haunting
the sixth sense
scary movie? Scream spoof?

Greenqueen40 · 21/10/2023 23:13

@Notfeelinghunkydory Saw? One of the most violent and gory horror franchises ever made? I presume you are joking.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 22/10/2023 00:41

Last night we watched A Quiet Place and our 10 yo came down and caught the last half hour. She wasn't traumatised but she was sitting with her blanket in her face so scary but not terrifying.

Fionaville · 22/10/2023 00:43

After commenting, I just watched the Lost boys with my 11 year old, who loved it and said it wasn't too scary at all, she said it was a 'comedy thriller' There really isn't that much gore in it either. I loved it at that age too.

PestilencialCrisis · 22/10/2023 00:54

I was going to say Hocus Pocus, but just seen other posters recommending Saw and think I must have a different benchmark for tween films. I'm in my 40s and haven't got the courage to watch that!

Clue
Little Shop of Horrors
Terminator 1&2
The episode of Doctor Who called "Blink" (or possibly "Don't Blink"...? One of the two!)

Not horror-horror by Saw standards exactly, but Murder on the Blackpool Express and Dial M for Middlesbrough on iPlayer are good, gentle whodunnit/crazy killer on the loose stories that are quite light-hearted, upbeat.

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 22/10/2023 01:57

Not a horror but Fall makes you jump.

GoldenFreddysBowTie · 23/10/2023 17:42

Thank you all - some good suggestions there to keep us going! May have to wait a few years before we enter SAW territory, mind you! 🤣

I saw Blair Witch Project as a teen in the theater and distinctly remember being scared to turn the lights off at home afterwards.

Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark was very good, I loved the books as a kid. It's higher quality than most, not extremely scary.

My teen says The Boy is scary.

Lots of Black Mirror episodes are scary! Many of them I wished I hadn't seen, I was so disturbed.

All of the Jordan Peele movies - Nope, Us, Get Out and Candyman

junbean · 23/10/2023 17:59

Also, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and I Came By (gorey!)

tiglit · 23/10/2023 18:01

@junbean I think it's always different seeing films in the cinema, The Ring scared the crap out of me as a teen in the cinema, I watched it with DS at home the other week and yeah was still scary but not terrifying like the cinema was!

I was only 16 and also lived in the woods, definitely factors. That feeling someone is behind you is majorly creepy though.

tiglit · 23/10/2023 18:06

@junbean I know what you mean, my mum didn't let me watch slashers growing up as she thought they were worse as they could happen as opposed to the supernatural she didn't believe in.
