TMI** Blood. Go to A&E or ring GP on Monday morning?

Hi All
I've been to the toilet this afternoon. Had quite a bit of blood from my bum. I am not constipated.. no pain. It was bright red and took quite a bit of toilet roll to clear the blood away.

So just been again.. very soft stool. No pressure. Again no pain. I am so sorry for grosing anyone out.. i just don't know whether to go to a&e in the morning or monitor it over the weekend and get emergency appointment at my GP surgery. I am prone to piles but it doesn't seem to be out and I haven't had any trouble with them since my pregnancy in 2020

So I guess the AIBU to wait until Monday? Could it possibly just be a pile/anal fissure? Even though I have no pain

Did they do a calprotectin test? Or just the FIT test (is that the one for blood?)? What inflammatory markers were elevated?

Try not to panic about the 2 week pathway referral. Most of them don't lead to a cancer diagnosis anyway, but I would say it's quite likely this will be something more inflammatory (not that that's great either!).

I didn't have large amounts of blood but I did have lots of bowel issues, high inflammatory markers, high calprotectin. It was investigated as possible Crohn's disease, but I was eventually diagnosed as having an issue with my pancreas. It was all quite rushed though because my bloods seemed to initially indicate possible blood/bone marrow cancer/disease.

The good thing about an urgent referral is that you will have answers, rather than waiting 6 months for an initial appointment with the consultant. Good you're feeling better and hope you know more soon.

Of course - well it should only be 2-3 weeks. Good luck and keep us updated.

Your GP probably told you that if in the mean time you develop acute abdominal pain, fever etc - you would need to go to A&E.

@mindutopia I got the FIT test done and had to send in a second stool sample in a little blue tube with a spoon thing on then end, which showed high inflammation markers. Im not sure of the name of that test though? Maybe thats the calprotectin? Yes GP thinks more inflammatory problem but obviously cancer still has to be ruled out too.

@Mirabai yes GP has said to go to A&E and let them know too so they can update the referral. Hopefully get a letter this week for a date🤞

Great that they are dealing with this all nice and swiftly. Hopefully it will turn out to be something easily resolvable.

TBH, @Healthisyourwealth (I'm glad to hear from you BTW), I'd follow your GP's advice and hot-foot it to A&E straight after the next bout of bleeding, armed with photos.
DC1 has Crohns and it was unbelievable how long the HCPs took to finally decide if they were going to treat them, and then weeks until they were able to start treatment.
If this might be you too, I'd get on it straight away.
Putting it bluntly, losing that amount of blood with every BM is dangerous, plus (and not to worry you) if you need treatment it's best to get it started ASAP.
I'm not talking about cancer here, but autoimmune diseases can cause damage if left unchecked.
I strongly suspect you're already feeling off-colour with all of this going on, and worrying will add to the issue (I know DC1 tends to flare when stressed).
It might take a bit of fighting and pestering people, but if you get on the right treatment and know what it is you will feel much better (mentally at the least) for it. Flowers

@HikingforScenery @HohiyiKozbevi thank you so much for your well wishes. Hoping its something easily resolved🙏

@vipersnest1 The bleeding I had today wasn't as much as those photos thankfully. It just covered the tissue a few goes.. but obviously its still not right & shouldn't be happening. I think if i have much more i'll get going to A&E.. especially if I haven't had an appointment letter by the end of the week for a date at least. There isn't even any bowel issues in my family at all. Wonder is it still possible for internal piles maybe? God knows. Yes I am feeling very off and not myself worrying about it all. Im ok one minute then the next i'll be thinking & thinking. So frustrating😓

Thank you to everyone messaging. The support has been lovely on here💐💐💐💐💐

Hmmm, @Healthisyourwealth, it sounds like you're wavering. Sorry to pester you! But seriously, go if you have any significant amount of bleeding. A good few wipes to get rid of it isn't right and you know it. Piles can be excluded with a simple 'finger up the bum'. They can bleed heavily, but an examination can rule them out or in.
Sorry to be graphic but it's worth trying to find some humour (if no dignity) in the situation! Believe me, you can leave your dignity at the door and collect it on your way out - it will be alright. I've been there and had worse.
Seriously, don't leave it if there's anything else that's not right, do something about it. The sooner you know, the sooner you can get treatment and get yourself and your body back on track.
I really wish you well, in all senses of the word.

FrodoBagginsToeHair · 31/10/2023 22:35

I had significant bleeding from internal piles - many instances because I was too scared to get checked out. Sometimes I was bleeding between bowel movements too. One of them had thrombosed and I ended up needing a haemorrhoidectomy. I hope you get answers soon OP - fingers firmly crossed it’s nothing serious.

I had to have a colonoscopy to be diagnosed
