TMI** Blood. Go to A&E or ring GP on Monday morning?

Hi All
I've been to the toilet this afternoon. Had quite a bit of blood from my bum. I am not constipated.. no pain. It was bright red and took quite a bit of toilet roll to clear the blood away.

So just been again.. very soft stool. No pressure. Again no pain. I am so sorry for grosing anyone out.. i just don't know whether to go to a&e in the morning or monitor it over the weekend and get emergency appointment at my GP surgery. I am prone to piles but it doesn't seem to be out and I haven't had any trouble with them since my pregnancy in 2020

So I guess the AIBU to wait until Monday? Could it possibly just be a pile/anal fissure? Even though I have no pain

I had a sudden rush of blood from my arse about six months ago. Like you there was no pain or even discomfort. It was also bright red.

I googled "bleeding from arse" and NHS website said it was ok, it happens sometimes I just thought it might be an internal pile of something. Anyway, six months later I'm fine, no 're occurrences.

Healthisyourwealth · 23/10/2023 20:23

@FloofCloud @Lurkylurks so there was no obvious piles/or fissure (seems like the one pile i had previously, has either gone or shrunk very very small). So I've been asked to send in a sample..💩 🤧🥴 GP thinks its an inflammatory problem especially since my bloods were elevated last week.

@user1471453601 it's very strange these things happen. Glad there hasn't been anymore for you🤞

@Healthisyourwealth I'm glad your GP is following up and taking it seriously, but hope it turns out to be nothing serious, or at least it will be something that can be managed with treatment.

HohiyiKozbevi · 25/10/2023 02:23

@user1471453601 they do happen sometimes but you really should get your gp to run some tests anyway. A stool sample test and blood tests will be very quick and easy. You do not want to find out in 4 years time that your event 6 months ago was the first warning sign of something that could have been nipped in the bud but has now grown more serious.

lemmein · 25/10/2023 03:51

I had something similar happen about 15 years ago - it only happened once but I remember how alarmed I was seeing so much blood in the loo.

I didn't get it checked out but I'm still here so assume it was nothing

Healthisyourwealth · 27/10/2023 21:50

Hey just a little update on here: results from my stool samples have come back that both had a significant amount of blood in them. So my GP has referred me to gastro red flag on the 2 week cancer pathway😬

@Missingthegore would you have any advice? Or know what I should suspect next?

To give you straight answers:
Cancer will be the first one - you will probably have a colonoscopy to check. (I've had similar on the two-week pathway, it was just to exclude the possibility.)
Inflammatory diseases like Crohns or ulcerative colitis. These can also be looked for during colonoscopy - you might have samples taken.
Bowel polyps - again, colonoscopy - they will be removed and biopsied.
Other more unusual things - I can't take a type of antibiotic as it causes my gut to shed its lining and bleed. Bleeds caused by anti-inflammatory drugs.
I can't think of any more just now, but I had a small bleed a few weeks ago (not as dramatic as yours) and there has been no cause found.
Basically, it could be a whole range of things. No-one here can advise you, as everyone's case is different. I hope you find the cause and get treatment quickly if you need it.

Hopefully the blood is just the visible bright stuff. It doesn’t necessarily mean anything more sinister Flowers

Missingthegore · 27/10/2023 22:30

There is no point in suspecting anything at this point. I have been down this path myself and with my knowledge I had already given myself a bowel resection in my head! I have crohns which is completely manageable with medication for me, no surgery required.
Your GP is doing a fantastic job of managing your care.

@vipersnest1 has given you some truthful likelihoods. A colonoscopy is the gold standard of care so hopefully you have one soon.

Mirabai · 27/10/2023 22:55

NB don’t try to do a colonoscopy without sedation 😬

To be referred on the cancer pathway means the stool had microscopic blood in it.

I agree! Had a colonoscopy recently without sedation and I regretted it!

That’s interesting - when I had my FIT test the GP told me even external piles blood could give a positive result. Is that not true?!

I don’t think so - I just did a stool test with visible blood coating the stool sample, but the result was negative for occult blood. Occult means not visible to the eye. It uses antibodies to find blood in the stool.

Mindymomo · 28/10/2023 09:38

@Minfilia yes internal piles that bleed will give a positive result in sample, but should be investigated in case it’s nothing else.

DH has colitis and diverticulitis, both of these conditions cause bleeding when his bowel is inflamed.

Healthisyourwealth · 28/10/2023 12:39

Thanks all. I guess it's just a waiting game of when the appointment comes through etc x

I had similar. Did a FIT test and my GP called me the day before Christmas Eve to say the FIT was positive. Spent the whole of Christmas worrying but quickly got an appointment for a colonoscopy at the very beginning of January (I think less than two weeks after the positive FIT). In my case it turns out that I have Crohn’s. I was absolutely terrified after googling though. Don’t Google!

I hope you get an answer quickly!

Edited

AIUI - piles etc can cause a false positive, but the visible blood of piles on the exterior is not what is being tested for - they’re looking for micro blood within the stool itself.

I’ve been there. Stigmoidscopy followed by colonoscopy. Now diagnosed with colitis.

vipersnest1 · 30/10/2023 23:19

How are you doing @Healthisyourwealth?

Healthisyourwealth · 31/10/2023 09:06

@vipersnest1 I'm doing ok. Patiently waiting on an appointment. I didn't have anymore bleeding since.. until this morning after BM😫 again no pain. Just need to stay off Dr Google lol thanks for checking in on me😊
