'I feel sick' competitive drama idiots

dramatix · 20/10/2023 22:03

Can't bear it when posters say 'I feel sick/physically sick' whenever discussing something terrible.

Ditto when characters are sick when receiving bad news in tv dramas. Literally never happens in real life.

I heard details of a murder trial going on in Ireland on the radio the other day and yes I actually felt sick.

dramatix · 20/10/2023 22:10

Did you

Sick in the stomach - yes. Not actual vomit sick - but strong stomach churn sick.

HoHoHoliday · 20/10/2023 22:12

Hmm, it does happen in real life. I once received some news that was such a traumatic shock to me that I was sick. I also sometimes feel sick when I see awful news stories. Buy you do you.

caerdydd12 · 20/10/2023 22:12

Plenty of people get bad news and feel physically sick, it's a visceral reaction.

sprigatito · 20/10/2023 22:13

You're just wrong, I'm afraid. Nausea is a common physiological response to shock and distress. I vomited when I was told my dad had stage 4 cancer.

Bit weird of you, tbh.

qmalro · 20/10/2023 22:13

Nausea is my body's go to stress response unfortunately, so yeah it can happen.

Berushni · 20/10/2023 22:15

Yeah, it literally does happen in real life, so maybe it's your reaction which is odd.

Libertass · 20/10/2023 22:15

You’re in the wrong place to complain about ‘competitive drama idiots’, OP. MN is full of them.

MrsHughesPinny · 20/10/2023 22:16

It definitely happens to me.

I was in a meeting recently where graphic detail of a crime was disclosed (my job is not usually this, it was just relevant to something else I was working on so I’m not trained to deal with such info) and I had to excuse myself because I felt sick and shaky.

EvilElsa · 20/10/2023 22:18

I threw up after receiving terrible news. It does happen. I wasn't "drama seeking", nobody was there.

Babymamma192 · 20/10/2023 22:18

When I was told my sister had bowel cancer I was throwing up so it definitely happens to some people.

CheekyHobson · 20/10/2023 22:19

Well done on having a limited emotional spectrum or never having suffered a traumatic shock, OP. We're all very impressed with your stoicism.

NahNahKissHimGoodbye · 20/10/2023 22:20

Yes I do feel viscerally Ill from shock trauma or disgust sometimes. Some people do.

🤣

youveturnedupwelldone · 20/10/2023 22:20

I had something happen to me recently that made me physically sick and still makes me feel sick every time I think about it. Was a totally innocent happening if you didn't know the backstory. It does happen!

Libertass · 20/10/2023 22:15

Not least the OP, who apparently loves the drama of pairing a sweeping and easily disproved claim with an insult. 😂

TheyreEatingThemInNelsonAndTheBluff · 20/10/2023 22:23

Just because it doesn’t happen to you, doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen to other people!

LuckOfTheDrawer · 20/10/2023 22:27

I remember my Mum being sick when I was a child and she got some bad news.

OP, do you believe in other things that you happen to have not experienced 🧐?

feliciabirthgiver · 20/10/2023 22:28

Sorry another stress puker here too 🤮

XenoBitch · 20/10/2023 22:33

It does happen. But when someone said they felt sick after watching some drama with a traumatic scene in it... did they really have to leave the room and vomit?
I think that is hugely different to someone receiving bad news etc.

Same applies when someone says they were actually crying with laughter (or howling). The only time I have cried with laughter is when I was with someone who was crying too.. you set each other off then wonder what you actually found funny to start with.

AirFryerFrequentFlyer · 20/10/2023 22:35

Feeling nauseous or actually vomiting is, as has been pointed out, a well documented and not uncommon reaction to shock to the central nervous system.

Try again OP. I'm sure you can come up with another inventive insult to get us all worked up for your next Reddit thread Hmm

Cookingdoesntgettougher · 20/10/2023 22:37

It’s part of the fight or flight response- our stressors now are different so being prepared physically isn’t generally as useful BBC Science

Mouldyuck · 20/10/2023 22:37

I used to watch a lot of true crime, even thought about going into the industry. One video turnt my stomach, even typing about it makes me nauseous. I'll never watch true crime again.

Remaker · 20/10/2023 22:38

I don’t disbelieve people who feel this way or actually vomit after bad news. I do draw the line at this being an indicator of how caring you are. Having recently been treated for cancer myself, there was somewhat of a correlation between the people who needed to tell me how devastated/upset/traumatised THEY were at the news, and their complete uselessness at assisting or supporting me in any way. The people who either did not fall into a faint, or if they did kept their reactions to themselves, were generally a better support to me.
