AIBU to steal the cat

ChilliNoodleGoodness · 20/10/2023 13:08

I know IABU and I would never do it but I feel so sorry for it.

A neighbour of mine has a few cats, one of which became pregnant and had kittens. One of the kittens she kept has gone on to have her own kittens - she is so small too.

She gave birth a few months back and is pregnant again! She is covered in fleas and worms and always crying outside peoples houses.

Have asked Cats Protection for advice and they have provided me with details of cheap neutering which I have anonymously posted through her door.

Part of me wants to just take the cat to the vets and get her treatment and have her speyed but I know in real life that is not the best thing to do :(

My mother once ‘stole’ a dog for similar reasons.

She passed it twice every day on her dog walk. It was always in the back garden rain or shine. No shelter available. It was skinny and had a poor condition coat.

She started taking treats with her and giving them to the dog. One day the dog just jumped over the gate and followed her home.

My mum could of course have returned the dog but once she could feel all her bones and how emaciated she was she didn’t.

It was a female German Shepherd and she lived a long, happy and spoiled life with another relative.

This was about thirty years ago.

To answer a few questions:

The owner is rather...unsavoury shall we say. Her house looks a tip from the outside, broken blinds etc. She's OK to talk to but I don't bother with her.

She has a few cats, one of which is beautiful and does look well looked after.

This one climbs in through my window, screams for food and my dp does feed it. Especially when she was pregnant. I have a tom cat (neutered) so wouldn't want to bring it into mine just in case. My SIL said she wants it, she feels sorry for it but I'm not sure stealing it is the correct road to go down. I may knock and ask if she has any kittens for sale. Get some more info

Stealing absolutely is the right way to go. If you offer to pay, she’s making money out of neglect!

I’m a normally law abiding citizen, but stuff like this makes my blood boil.

Kimten · 21/10/2023 13:57

Take the cat. Please.
And spay her.
That subhuman woman probably won't even notice she's gone.
Some people are pigs.

I'd maybe have the photos deleted from the thread, just to be safe

Yesiamtiredactually · 22/10/2023 08:40

Just take the cat the next time you see her and bring her to the RSPCA or cats protection, say you found her and she didn’t have a collar etc, was worried about her condition so brought her there. They will look after her properly and rehome her.
like others have said, it’s so unlikely she’s been chipped they won’t be able to allocate her to the “owner”.
Or maybe they will but either way the cat will get the medical attention she needs.

Brokenmiata · 22/10/2023 08:41

Just take it to a vet, say you found her and she's been hanging around for a few weeks. They'll scan her for a chip and if she doesn't have one then you can contact a local rescue and they'll take her and spay. Don't mention you know she's owned.

So awful OP 😪 breaks my heart and makes me furious. I foster cats for a local charity and this past week 2 kittens have died already (in the care of a lovely fosterer who takes the mums & kittens mainly). One litter were being kept by a woman who wouldn't hand them over for ages even though Mum cat couldn't feed them as she was ill as owner had provided shocking care. Another litter was born outside & Mum was only v young herself - they were all unmicrochipped strays. So heart breaking. We get ones handed in to us as taken too young from their Mums and sold and then don't thrive etc & new owners can't afford vet care. There's a HUGE kitten crisis this year as people just aren't neutering their cats as much and aren't getting them micrichipped (it will be law by June 2024) Cost of living crisis has really taken its toll 💔 talk to your neighbour OP - if she won't see sense (does she know young cats that repeatedly have litters are more likely to die in labour/have lots of complications/have weak or stillborn kittens?) then I'd suggest taking the cat to a charity to get neutered and they'll find a new home for it. It is shocking how many people don't neueter their cats or provided basic care for them 😪😪😪😪😪😪 Also female cats are surrounded by unneutered Tom cats and raped basically - its not at all nice and the male cats will fight for her and injure each other badly too. So all those people who think it's OK to let their cats have one litter are misinformed sadly and every charity is currently overrun with kittens atm.

BowlOfNoodles · 22/10/2023 09:00

You can't do that you'd have to actually steal the cat and get it well again after it's surgery in your house with it's fleas

Malificent1 · 22/10/2023 09:01

Take the cat. She needs your help.

Stickytreacle · 22/10/2023 09:03

Id take the cat too, I doubt the "owner" will care, if they even notice.

Warum · 22/10/2023 09:04

Call the RSPCA, and make a formal complaint - this way she will be properly looked into and educated/dealt with. You can do it anonymously.
Stealing this cat won't stop her just letting it happen to another cat.

DottyLottieLou · 22/10/2023 09:05

Yes, do it. The cat will choose anyway, once it knows you will look after it.

CrunchyCarrot · 22/10/2023 09:15

That gorgeous kitty has clearly chosen you as its rescuer! Don't let him/her down!

nzeire · 22/10/2023 09:15

She needs you!!!

Tinkerbyebye · 22/10/2023 09:27

Report to the RSPCA and Cats Protection

Isthisasgoodasitis · 22/10/2023 09:48

My old cat was taken off my drive by a neighbour’s visitor despite being microchipped and in good health other than being 19 she was euthanised absolutely nothing was done to those who murdered my cat stolen from my property cctv showed person their car and the fight my cat put up but they still took her … so do it give the cat half a chance

Superhair · 22/10/2023 09:55

Had to do something similar this summer. RSPCA and cats protection wouldn’t do anything, RSPCA are only interested if you’re giving them money and cp won’t intervene because they’re someone else’s pet. If you speak to a rescue they may go round and persuade them to neuter and hand over kittens, but they’re swamped with kittens at the moment.
I would and have neutered in that situation, it’s just cruel to sit back and leave them.
Cats protection offer vouchers for feral colonies ( that’s what my neighbour created) or other low cost options for yourself ( just don’t tell them they belong to someone else).

SharonTheHappySquirrel · 22/10/2023 10:21

If your SIL wants her, i would just take her there and if the owner knocks and ask just deny all knowledge

I'm shocked that was able to happen. The microchip should have helped here and I'm not sure why it didn't.

AnneValentine · 22/10/2023 13:30

Definitely catch it and take to vet. No question.

I don’t believe this for one second. Vets do not euthanise healthy cats.

AnneValentine · 22/10/2023 13:31

MidnightOnceMore · 20/10/2023 13:10

You can't do that.

Have you reported the poor care?

Why?

Littlelucas · 22/10/2023 13:32

I’d steal her yes. The owner clearly doesn’t give a shit about her. Just tell the vet you’ve found and adopted her, they will scan for a chip which I’m sure she won’t have and then get her treated. Poor thing.

inquisitiveinga · 22/10/2023 15:40

Steal the cat and get them sorted! It's only got one life and absolutely deserves the best...

Dashel · 22/10/2023 16:01

Please don’t offer money as it encourages her to keep breeding.

A responsible loving owner neuters their cats and looks after them properly.

Take the cat in and take it to your sisters discreetly and then let her get the poor mite treated and neutered and have a wonderful life. She is gorgeous.

I am a cat lover and I think you need to do what is best for the cat but not encourage the owner to carry on breeding by financially rewarding her irresponsible behaviour
