Stopped on a double yellow

PuncturedBicyclette · 20/10/2023 11:07

DS usually walks to school. Today it was chucking it down, so I drove him. Stopped briefly on double yellows outside the school. NOT on the zigzags. No kerb markings or other signs. As far as I know it's fine to stop (not park) on a double yellow, to let passengers out.

Was there 30 seconds. Stopped, DS got out, I left.

As I was pulling back out, man on bike shouts through my window "Do you know it's f*ing double yellows?". I reply "Yes thank you, I was letting a passenger out". He swears at me again and cycles off.

I'm not doing any thing wrong, am I?

Fair play to the cyclist riding in the pouring rain ☔️

My understanding is you can drop off on double yellows, but personally I wouldn’t as the double yellows are there for a reason as it’s likely an awkward place to pull over.

I do wonder whether you pulled out safely though as if you were pulling out and a bike went past it obviously wasn’t clear to be pulling out and the cyclist probably said that as he was frustrated at your lack of awareness.

I wasn't certain of the rules tbh until I read the thread, laughing at folk being mean to you and it turns out you were right and they were wrong. Anyway regardless of the rules the man shouldn't have yelled at you, that's horrible and distressing. Surely any kind person would understand you not wanting to send your son into school drenched? I see so many comments about entitled parents re: school parking but we have a responsibility to get our kids to school on time and not soaked. Lots of us don't qualify for the school bus. It can be so hard to find somewhere to drop off outside schools and what were you meant to do, keep driving round and round until your son's late and then that's your fault? Park further away and he goes into class in sodden clothes and then you're a shit neglectful Mum for that? I'd say even if it had been strictly speaking against the rules stopping for 30 seconds to let your son jump out of the car was the sensible thing to do. Sometimes no matter what we do people will say it's the wrong thing and judge, most people are so unkind it always confuses me.

😂😂😂😂 a responsibility to get our kids to school not soaked lol

I walked whatever the weather my parents just got me a waterproof

The rain doesn’t kill you

OP used the car as a waterproof, its expensive but its what most people seem to do now. If you have ever wondered why the roads are more congested during rain - this is the answer, many that normally walk or cycle, hop in the car and drive instead.

Good point, I am definitely a fair weather cyclist :)

Arguing with the man would be classified as waiting, so I'm afraid you broke the law after all.

I walked too and yeah I walked in the rain but if it was very heavy rain my parents phoned me a taxi. My kids walk or cycle but if it's torrential rain or a gale I drive them in and before I had a car I forked out a fortune for taxis on days the weather was too rough to walk. They do have waterproofs that are meant to be super duper 10,000ml, keep you dry no matter how heavy the rain is waterproofs, but in reality they're no use in heavy rain, after 5 minutes they start to soak through. Sending them into school in wet clothes and them having to sit in class soaking and shivering would be miserably uncomfortable for them, could make them ill and would be neglectful imo 🤷 so yeah, we have a responsibility to not do that. The school would probably have words if I did do that.

It’s already been established on this thread that you can drop off, pick up and load unload whilst on double yellows.
Including arguing with people who don’t understand what double yellows are
Nothing wrong with that

I was being a clown and stretching the facfs because OP was pulling off when she was arguing, but despite your post I still think (how I wanted to type 'I remain convinced', so I sort of have) that arguing with someone whilst stationary would be seen by the Costabulary as waiting.

Can you do that on a yellow line?

Disturbia81 · 08/08/2025 13:50

I did my theory test recently and it came upa lot, it’s fine to drop off and pick up, no waiting or parking

Phew! 2 years later we have a definitive answer (x 4).

This thread is an incredible window into reading comprehension levels.

Haha the number of people who are wrong but insist they are right!

Single or double RED lines indicate stopping is restricted.

Yellows restrict parking (or “waiting”)

OP is correct.

I don’t get why mine is the first zombie reply, it came up on active threads for me. Oops
