What did Labour stand on at these by-elections?
Was it anything?
Or just "we're not blue"

Hoping it holds up until next year. But I’m sure Sunak will continue to be useless and horrible so very much looking forward to election season!

How on earth is Sunak horrible and useless? I honestly think if Mother Theresa was brought back from the dead, and decided to become Tory PM people would say what an awful, immoral person she was.

If this is all you've seen, you're not really paying attention.

Obviously political parties have to get their message out, but conference had plenty of policies which were covered by the media.

Overtime commitment to bring NHS waiting list back to 2010 level, reform of planning, 1.5m houses, COVID fraud commissioner are some I can remember.

None of that addresses the country's deep problems - low productivity, family breakdown, govt spending too much, lawlessness. Apart from nhs waiting lists which will cost billions and won't work when there are 7m on waiting lists.

There is absolutely no evidence for that, can't believe people still believe this nonsense.

from the Covid Inquiry

https://twitter.com/implausibleblog/status/1715039421152600321?s=20

Prof John Edmunds, "As I explained to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, we either lockdown now and control the epidemic, or it will force you into a lockdown later, when you'll have to lockdown harder and longer. 20,000-25,000 people died. Some would have, but there's no reason for that many people to have died at all.. There was no strategy, no long term thinking."

genesis92 · 20/10/2023 13:08

Have people not learnt yet that by elections and polls literally give no correct indication of how a GE will go. They've been wrong almost 100% of the time the last decade.

They just had a three day conference where they set all that out.

Yes Bozo should have taken advice from a wider range of experts including those behind the Great Barrington Declaration. He is like a shopping trolley being pushed around as Dominic Cummings said. He didn't even do a cost benefit analysis.
There is no evidence that those that didn't lockdown like Sweden and Florida suffered more deaths including from mental health etc. as we're seeing. These people are just trying to cover their backs for the worst policy decision in living memory which has bankrupted the country.

Sir John Curtice would beg to differ and I'd argue that he knows a bit more about it than 'random poster on Mumsnet.'

People with feminist principles are going to have a really hard time voting for Labour because of the trans rights issue. Once their stance is highlighted in an election campaign there is going to have to be some movement on it or they will leak these voters.

I'm a feminist and a bit GC but I don't have the luxury of voting on a single issue. I need a functioning country.

Why do the mega rich feel the need to move country rather than pay more tax to the country they were born, raised and experienced the health and education benefits of?
They will never even spend their money in their lifetime.
This is our country's issue- the extremely rich want to get richer and do not feel the need to support other humans less fortunate by paying higher taxes for improved services for all.
We don't have a genuine free press to challenge what is spoon-fed to everyone, either.
Independent thought is difficult due to an inability to validate news and information distributed.

They don't, it's just a myth peddled by parties with a vested interest.

It has never been backed up by the stats with something like 85% of billionaires residing in the country of their birth and, less than 10% of UHNW individuals emigrating from where they made their money.

@jgw1

Much of the cost to the government of immigration is in hotel bills. If they changed the law and policies so asylum seekers could work whilst their claims were being considered and/or processed those claims quickly then the cost would be less.

Would it though? Granted they won't be spunking £millions a day on hotel costs, but the erm...highly skiled migrants still need housing - at considerable public expense, plus various in-work benefits. Just like it is with the existing population.

The majority of adults in the UK do not pay income tax, so odds of them being net contributors to HM Treasury are low.

You only have to pay millions to a Tory donor to house asylum seekers if you drag your feet over processing asylum applications for years.

If the government processed asylum applications in four months instead of two years they'd cut about 80% of the bill.

I wonder why they don't do that?

I invited people to provide evidence of Sunak's honesty and integrity and decency some time ago. No takers really

@Thebestwaytoscareatory - thanks for the stats.
Do you think the uber wealthy would leave UK if they were asked for 1-2 % more contributions from their mega wealth? I suspect Dyson moving his production elsewhere also added into the fear.

This is what we in the biz call 'completely wrong'. In fact the Electoral Calculus aggregated polls have correctly predicted 7 out of the last 8 elections, and accurately predicted the 2019 Boris majority.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 20/10/2023 13:57

I think it's good news for now, but Labour would be stupid to rely on it. There's a lot of hard work to be done.

Teentaxidriver · 20/10/2023 14:18

I find it hard to take a poster seriously when they wang on about Thatcher. I mean you have to be pretty desperate to hark back to the last century in order to point the finger. How about Gordo selling our nation's gold reserves when the gold prices was at its lowest? Oh wait that was also fecking donkey's years ago.

The tax system is well known for making us all poorer. The latest report from the ifs this week says that (again). We are penalising the highest rate tax payers out of being productive which means less for everyone. How do labour plan to solve this? Last time I checked than planned on making the highlighted problems worse.

? Linky ?

Teentaxidriver · 20/10/2023 14:19

"None of that addresses the country's deep problems - low productivity, family breakdown, govt spending too much, lawlessness. "

THIS with bells on.

Teentaxidriver · 20/10/2023 14:21

"Linky" - typifies the problems with this country. Are you a spoon-fed, dependent minor or an adult with access to a search engine?

Teentaxidriver · 20/10/2023 14:23

20,000-25,000 people died.

Remind me - how big is the official population of this country?

Proportional, much?

Well obviously the last party anyone should vote for are the ones presiding over all these problems then.

saraclara · 20/10/2023 14:28

As a Mid Beds voter, I couldn't be more delighted!

Whether it will be more than a year's tenure for Strathan is debatable though.
This election was very much fought on local issues, and particularly the backlash against Nadine Dorries. Given a year, that is likely to fade, and the first time 'not Tory' voters might well go back to their party, especially if the government responds with tax cuts etc.
