I absolutely LOATHE the “they’re all the same” argument 🤬. It’s such utter bollocks. You can’t begin to compare the vile government that we’ve suffered certainly since 2019, but 10-19 wasn’t much better.

Labour might not be miracle workers but they will be streets ahead of this shower of shit. Unless you’re a rich fucker of course - then you might not get away with being quite so fucking greedy 🙄.

Coveescapee · 20/10/2023 11:13

Yes their prediction may be right (or wrong) but that is a drop in the ocean when the govt is due to spend £1109 billion this year!

@Coveescapee the point is that the IFS prediction, which is the best available, shows that the policy would not cost money, which is what a previous poster was suggesting.

You do realise that the Tories have increased taxes on "the rich" over their decade in office don't you? Or don't the facts meet your agenda?

The Tories have reduced taxes etc on lower income workers and brought in various tax hikes on the higher earning workers etc.

Doesn't fit your narrative though, does it?

Be prepared for the posters who claim they'll be glad to see the back of those "rich" people if they're not prepared to pay more tax!

Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face!

The UK, as a whole, is worse off when rich people leave the UK and move abroad in many ways, not just lost tax revenue, but lost spending power (and vat thereon), lost employment (most rich people employ others), lost revenue from appearances/performances from sportspersons, musical/theatre artists etc.

It's exactly why tax haven countries become tax havens - they want to attract the rich people to spend their money and employ people in their countries!

Hey ho - our loss will be their gain!

Why should we be worried about losing rich people, as you have identified they pay a lower proportion of tax than many of us. Look at for example Sunak who pays abotu 23% tax on his income - less than teachers and nurses. If instead of paying a few people more money than they could possibly need that same money was used to pay most people a bit more, the tax revenue would be significantly higher, and more money would be spent in the local economy. Win-win.

jgw1 · 20/10/2023 11:38

Locking down sooner as Starmer advocated would have caused fewer deaths and cost less.

There is absolutely no evidence for that, can't believe people still believe this nonsense.

See my earlier post about sensible stuff being argued against. Braveman understands about the costs of immigration. She and Sunak want to take action. but Labour, some Tories and ECHR prevent her policies.
We are eating our own limbs whilst we are still alive.

Much of the cost to the government of immigration is in hotel bills. If they changed the law and policies so asylum seekers could work whilst their claims were being considered and/or processed those claims quickly then the cost would be less.

The question you should be asking is why if Braverman understands those costs she insists on making them as high as possible for the government?

The answer may lie in who is making money off the back of that government spending, as it often seems to be with this government.

Except it’s all in the SAGE information in the enquiry.

Piggywaspushed · 20/10/2023 11:48

but I did think that the Tory candidate would still get in.. he's the current Bedfordshire PCC so is a known name locally.

Doesn't help that he is an awful PCC.

Well, thats exactly what leading scientists are telling the Covid inquiry and the UKs current CMO said in 2020 that the Chancellor was Doctor Death, Sunak was the Chancellor and she was referring to his Eat out to Help out policy, paying billions to spread Covid.

Spot on.

Take for instance teachers and doctors. If the government instead of belittling them at every opportunity chose instead to issue supportive statement praising their work, then the pay and other disputes would much more likely be resolved.

Is the Prime Minister rich or poor?

Is the 23% tax he pays on his income high or low?

May I suggest you take a read of the evidence that has so far been presented to the covid enquiry, it is really quite clear.

I remember it very well. This is nothing like 1987 for many reasons. 2024 won't be a repeat of it.

You can tell when Tory supporters are getting desperate. They start But Corbyn-ing. Or But Wales-ing.

Or making up a nickname for Neil Kinnock.

I smell desperation.

Norwegiancopice · 20/10/2023 11:51

I don't think any party can be worse than this terrible bunch of Conservaties.

Generally the electorate is too thick to realise the actual reality. It’s simpler for them to think Tory - far right.

OhCrumbsWhereNow · 20/10/2023 10:09

Worth noting that Reform cost the Conservatives both of these by-elections last night.

Labour vote isn't up - Tories stayed at home.

Labour share of vote up 12,5 % in Mid Beds and total number of votes cast for them was up.

Once more for the underplayers. This is a seat that has been Tory since 1931 and the largest ever majority to be overturned.

I would like to make a prediction that the Conservative party after the next election will be even worse, as the few that remain fight for control with some of the NatCs being particularly prominent.

How ridiculous blaming Thatcher - she hasn't been in for 33 years! And the 90s were a golden time - the tory govt in 1997 left a great economy for Labour. Instead of investing it in infrastructure and long term projects they wasted it on short-term buying peoples votes- at one time we were receiving "benefits" aka tax credits even though my husband was on £50k. This has been carried on by the tories which is why now we have record spending and taxes and nothing to show due it. @Princessandthepea0 has got it about right.

The problem is Thatcherism never stopped. We've had 40+ years of it

There are members of the government who are openly advocating for girls to have less education than boys, so that they stay at home and make babies.

From where I am stood in roughly the centre ground, if I put a telescope to my eye and look right I can just about catch a glimpse of the current Tory party.

Coveescapee · 20/10/2023 11:55

What we've had is nothing like thatcherism. She was competent for a start.

Piggywaspushed · 20/10/2023 11:56

The reason labour won was a general getting that the Tories were corrupt(Neil Hamilton etc.)

Just a thought : maybe the Tories could try harder to not be corrupt?

Who has said that? Evidence please. There is nothing right (in all ways) about the tories which is why their voters have abandoned them.

Yet despite a slight increase in taxes on the wealthy, the number of millionaires in the country has sky rocketed since 2012.

1.6m in 2012
2.9m in 2022 which is more than Germany, despite a smaller population and a far smaller economy.

That’s great. You make the mistake of thinking I vote Tory. I can assure you I fucking don’t - not paying nearly 70% tax on PAYE in this household. They are robbing workers to keep a welfare dependency the highest on record. A socialists wet dream. Can’t stand Labour either, their supporters aren’t forward thinking either. Hoping the ‘rich’ who are paying for everyone else to leave. Good idea that - with state borrowing at its highest ever to pay for the majority of adults to take out. Also, as a woman - I won’t vote for them - ever.

Coveescapee · 20/10/2023 11:59

I think that millionaires figure is taking housing wealth into account which just shows how ridiculous house prices are.
