Lol @jgwi

You get a gold star for not being gullible and easily manipulated⭐️

But I haven't answered the question yet.

verdantverdure · 20/10/2023 20:58

I think we will too, but I won't mind a coalition.

The Tories, however, will be lucky to form an opposition.

In name the Tories might form the opposition, but sadly for democracy in the UK they will spend an age arguing with each other, with in all likelihood the NatCs coming out on top and consigning the Tory party to opposition for a generation.

noblegiraffe · 20/10/2023 20:59

Why would voting in the Red Wall be more interesting than the voting in the Tories' previously 55th safest seat?

I think the comment on the news about voters returning to Labour, who had previously voted Tory because of Brexit, interesting.

Seems Brexit has not been popular either.

If this is replicated, there will be quite a few northern constituencies that return to their Labour roots.

Isn't Brexit only popular now with the same 9% or so of the population who thought it was a good idea prior to 2015 when the Cambridge Analytica Brexit slogan generator kicked into action?

Everyone else has eyes.

Nah, lets talk about the Red Wall.

Such as Wakefield.

Not only that the Tories have managed to alienate whole swathes of middle England with their hate filled rhetoric as can be seen in the mid-Bed by-election.

verdantverdure · 20/10/2023 21:05

I wasn't aware of that @Piggywaspushed.

Transport issues often don't feature in "most important issues to you" polls but they're vital to life aren't they?

And some people just seem to fall for Tory lies over and over again bless their hearts.

StillWantingADog · 20/10/2023 21:07

I’m still hoping for a spring GE . With the tories’ popularity sinking fast there is a strong case to call an election before it gets even worse for them. It might be a choice between losing badly and near obliteration. While the latter is preferable this country will suffer badly with another year of those fools.

the vast majority will not contest their seats so sad that we won’t get to see them losing them (like the vile Tory mid beds candidate, who stormed off the stage in a huff like a petulant child)

verdantverdure · 20/10/2023 21:08

Well people would be mad to vote again for the people who keep lying to them, wouldn't they @jgw1?

TizerorFizz · 20/10/2023 21:08

@noblegiraffe Im talking about the GE. The red wall seats became blue didn’t they. But for how long? Will they revert to labour? What about the SNP vote? Will
that fall and let Labour win more seats in Scotland? This fascinates me. Again, you cannot project by election results to a GE, exactly. It could well be direction of travel but it’s not guaranteed. There’s many slip ups and policies to be uncovered in a year. Plus I don’t agree about the press. Most people follow social media. Not the editor of the mail. Newspaper circulation is pretty low. Elon Musk has more sway! Probably.

I dunno, tomato shortages happen in the spring...

I am pretty sure that it was the nasty older kid But Jeremy Corbyn and the tofu eating wokerati teacher lawyer doctors in the Labour party that made them do it with a lettuce in conjuction with the lefties in the HoLs and the mudstream media.

It is as I might have mentioned before such a shame that we haven't had any by-elections in Scotland or the Red Wall or indeed any opinion polls that might give us a clue to the answer to those questions.

I have a bridge to sell, any takers?

There will be plenty of unemployed turnips though after the GE.

verdantverdure · 20/10/2023 21:18

Yes @jgw1

It's all their fault that the Tories have trashed the country, the economy and (almost) every promise they ever made.

Rotten bigger boys!

Papyrophile · 20/10/2023 21:19

Probably a lone voice here, but I actually like to hear argument within parties. I am never going to vote for any candidate that is far off the centre.

But as I said above, I have a bit more financial flexibilty than many, and there is no way we shall stand around to be fleeced either. Happy enough to pay tax at about 35% of my pension income, but above that, I am out, and activelly looking for another country to live in.

I don’t understand any of this.

Is the lettuce Truss? I still don’t understand it even if it is Truss.

pointythings · 20/10/2023 21:20

@Papyrophile I'm all for healthy debate, but that really isn't what the Tories have been doing for the longest time now.

RogueFemale · 20/10/2023 21:21

TizerorFizz · 20/10/2023 08:47

The problem we have is that the poor want money provided by everyone else. Taxation is at record levels and it’s still not enough. Non dom tax is a drop in the ocean. It’s rhetoric. Taxing working people more probably isn’t an option. Liz Truss was right about needing greater productivity. She just didn’t understand how to get it. All parties need to look at improving productivity. They probably don’t have the brains to do it but unless we do, we sink further back and no one gets more from government spending because they simply don’t have the money.

Truss was a total fucking disaster, hence why she lasted only 49 days as PM. She wasn't 'right' about anything.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/10/2023 21:20

It is the reason that ULEZ was introduced. Surely everyone knows this.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/10/2023 21:30

Truss introduced ULEZ? Well l never!

Can you just put some punctuation in so l can understand it?

Revenants · 20/10/2023 21:32

Today is very similar to 1992-1997, which was the slow decline of the Tories. I lived and breathed those days plus the Thatcher years.

The social, economic and political things which are different in the UK today are:

  1. The fear of boats.
  2. Unemployment (we have the reverse now).
  3. The internet.

Anything is possible. A Labour wine is not certain.

Papyrophile · 20/10/2023 21:33

@pointythings It's not a political point, it's economic. I'm 67 so my days to make a fortune are probably in the rear view mirror, and I didn't make millions. But I did put away money to retire. I/We are not wealthy; we have saved enough to ensure we shan't worry about a supermarket run next week. In 15 years time, we might have to make compromises.

It would be good to still have the EU freedom of movement about now, am I right? Grin

Singapore's nice so long as you don't want to own a car, or are rich enough that you don't mind paying 5x what it would cost to own the same car in Blighty.

Papyrophile · 20/10/2023 21:41

There are countries outside the EU that appeal, but I would have preferred Europe. Closer, primarily, which is important because I have ageing parents. But otherwise, more or less certain to be somewhere in Asia. I wouldn't bother to have a car in Singapore: a taxi arrives in under 5 minutes.
