AIBU to think human hair wig/weave/extensions are absolutely revolting?

Am I the only one who has the real 'ick' about this?

With the fashion at the moment everywhere for ultra long hair, it is even more revolting. Hair everywhere, ragged edges, thin, constant touching of the hair. It looks terrible.

The argument is that the good extensions aren't noticeable, only the bad ones. Unless you are a celebrity sitting still on a couch, hair moves on your head. No matter what people tell you, it IS so obvious when you have not grown your own long hair.

It's one thing to need to use human body parts or hair for medical reasons - but, it revolts me to think about putting someone else's hair on your head for fashion.

Not to mention how women in poor countries are exploited to provide the hair.

AIBU to think that natural, healthy shorter hair is a million % better looking than wigs, weaves and extensions?

yanbu for having your opinion. but honestly, dont like it, don't wear it, and keep your opinion to yourself.

thebellagio · 19/10/2023 09:52

Is that true? I thought a lot of real hair wigs were created by people choosing to donate their hair to charities like The Little Princess Trust? I know several people who lobbed their ponytails off and donated their hair.

I honestly don't see a problem with it. Although I have now got images of Homer Simpson being controlled by Snake's toupee in one of the Halloween episodes...

AdobeWanKenobi · 19/10/2023 09:52

I'm sure all those people who have lost their hair to cancer and rely on these wigs for their own self esteem dont give two shits about your opinion.

Or was this just designed to be a goady?

McIntire · 19/10/2023 09:53

I agree and there’s no reason why you should keep your opinion to yourself! This is a forum for discussion.

I also hate false nail extensions and lashes

MarjorieStuartBaxter · 19/10/2023 09:54

Yabu it can be a cultural thing or obviously others who have had an illness, agree they look awful if done bad but let people get on with it it's not harming you is it if it makes someone feel better about themselves

Yep

I bet you've definitely not gone through life without ever wearing wool cut off an animal or something with leather made out of animal skin.

Vriddle · 19/10/2023 10:03

There's plenty of fashion I don't like the look of. And we all know that a disturbing amount of clothing, both designer and fast fashion, is produced in appalling conditions.

Some people think hair extensions look great. They don't want them to look natural - that's not the point. See also: heavy, caterpillar eyelashes; lip filler; frozen-face Botoxing; thick layers of makeup.

It's not for me, but it's clearly a fashionable choice. It will be replaced. That's how it goes. We're not all wearing bustles or enormous wigs anymore.

toomanyleggings · 19/10/2023 10:03

I’ve worn them years. I don’t wear my hair up and they’re only the same length as my own hair so you can’t see them the majority of the time. I suppose you might be able to see them occasionally on a windy day but I’m really not bothered. My natural hair looks terrible on its own so having some for thickness makes me feel a lot better and definitely looks a lot better. I agree that hair extensions longer than your own hair can look a bit ratty on the ends but each to their own.

AgnesX · 19/10/2023 10:06

Couldn't care less about whether hair is artificial or not but the constant pawing, stroking and the swishing of long locks on work calls and meetings is irritating. Stop fidgeting!!

Isn’t there rather a difference between wigs for people who have lost their hair to cancer and hair extensions for women who’ve got hair but want longer hair?

PurpleChrayne · 19/10/2023 10:12

Wearing poor women's hair is disgusting. Yes, for cancer survivors too. For everyone.

Nor to mention people on aircraft who throw their long hair into other people’s space.

lilyblue5 · 19/10/2023 10:15

So this doesn’t bother me but for some reason really badly kept natural long hair does. You know when it really needs a cut and it’s all split ends. I don’t even know why, it’s just something that always gives me shudders.

SecretVictoria · 19/10/2023 10:16

I think most people don’t maintain them as they should. I see loads where the hair is in a ponytail or up do and you can clearly see the bonds where the extensions are attached. IMO you need to pay a lot and maintain regularly for them to look good.

No, you are incorrect. The hair that is donated as you described is used to create wigs for cancer patients, or others who have lost hair due to medical reasons.

The hair extensions that you get at a salon for fashion were sold by very poor women, and I do think that is exploitive. They would clearly prefer to keep their long hair, and are selling it out of poverty desperation. Also, they are not paid anywhere near what the hair will be sold for overseas.

Most human hair sold in this way comes from poor Asian countries, but the most desirable human hair on the. market comes from (poor) Eastern European countries because it has greater natural colour variation and is easier to treat and match to Western clients, not that the poor Eastern European women are compensated anywhere near fairly for the profit it will bring someone else. There are a lot of documentaries online about this and I've seen a few. It is really sad because you can see that the poor communities where these women live place high cultural value on long hair for women, but often these women have nothing and nothing but their hair to sell. It makes me sad to think that the hair it took years to grow and was a sacrifice to lose is now going to be flicked around by some vapid Westerner for no good reason really.

Have you seen what happens to sheep when they don’t get shorn?

Tauranga · 19/10/2023 10:17

Most hair additions comes from poor women. In China, in India. And guess what? These women are paid, but men take the money. Men organise the trade. If you don't know about this trade then you are willfully ignorant. It is easy to find out about.

Getting a wig because you have lost your hair to cancer is entirely different and sometimes hair is supplied by charities where they get hair donated from UK based women.

Yes, quite. Clearly we are talking about vanity extensions, not wigs for cancer victims. Also, the wigs for cancer victims are mostly made from charity donations, which is quite different than the exploitive methods used to obtain vanity extensions for salons.

Spacecowboys · 19/10/2023 10:18

There are all kinds of fashions that aren’t to my taste but it’s exactly that - individual taste. I have hair extensions ( ethically sourced of course) and it never occurred to me to give a flying f* what other people think of them.

Somanycats · 19/10/2023 10:20

I had extensions once. I bloody hated them. Yes they were noticeable. I could never get my hair really clean. Yes I shed hair and couldn't comb close to my scalp. They were disgusting. I could only tolerate them for about a month and had them all taken out. Never again. Plus of course where they came from and the exploitation which I saw fit to ignore. Never again.

OfficerChurlish · 19/10/2023 10:21

Human hair is dead anyway, regardless of whose head originally grew it. There's no reason that a weave would be any more or less clean/hygenic than the natural, home-grown hair of its wearer.

Whether or not the added hair is ethically sourced is another matter.

Noshowlomo · 19/10/2023 10:23

Oh god they give me the ick. I bought some about 10 years ago, as I’d cut my hair shorter and didn’t like it. I bought them home, and even the smell turned me. I had visions of the soul of a pissed off Indian woman climbing my stairs to get her hair back, so I give them away. Never ever again.
Most of the time you can see them on other people (Britney spears!) but when they’re done we’ll they can look nice (Kardashians), but I’d never wear them again, artificial or real.

Wehavealaughdontwe · 19/10/2023 10:23

I used to wear hair extensions as I have very thin hair which doesn't grow. However I stopped as soon as I found out women, particularly in Asia but other parts if the world too, are exploited for the human hair trade. I feel guilty that I ever participated in this even at a low level. You just need to do a quick Google and many articles will come up. In the cases of cancer, alopecia sufferers, I think it is understandable to want to wear wigs made from human hair as synthetic is uncomfortable and can't be styled properly, but I think charities tend to use hair donated and ethically sourced (hopefully)
