AIBU to think human hair wig/weave/extensions are absolutely revolting?

Am I the only one who has the real 'ick' about this?

With the fashion at the moment everywhere for ultra long hair, it is even more revolting. Hair everywhere, ragged edges, thin, constant touching of the hair. It looks terrible.

The argument is that the good extensions aren't noticeable, only the bad ones. Unless you are a celebrity sitting still on a couch, hair moves on your head. No matter what people tell you, it IS so obvious when you have not grown your own long hair.

It's one thing to need to use human body parts or hair for medical reasons - but, it revolts me to think about putting someone else's hair on your head for fashion.

Not to mention how women in poor countries are exploited to provide the hair.

AIBU to think that natural, healthy shorter hair is a million % better looking than wigs, weaves and extensions?

I don't understand how people with bonded extensions are supposed to brush their hair properly or give their scalp a really good scrub with shampoo. Surely that then means that it could potentially ruin your real hair. I can't even imagine how itchy my scalp would get with all that build up.

TomatoSandwiches · 19/10/2023 10:27

I think using the word revolting is inappropriate and goady.

EezyOozy · 19/10/2023 10:29

I agree, it’s disgusting gluing somebody else’s keratin onto your body. And inevitably - a separate point - the bodily fibres of a women poorer than you.

*EDIT - clearly if it’s a result of health issues people have less of a choice and do have to make less than ideal choices. I am talking about doing this for pure vanity.

You wouldn’t glue somebody else’s fingernails on would you.

Hmmm. My mum wears different wigs for alopecia (fake hair mainly) but should she walk around bold?

Have you seen what happens to sheep when they don’t get shorn?

What's the point you're trying to make? This is the second time you've randomly quoted me for no reason.

Sorry, when was the first time? I don’t usually notice poster names, I’m replying to the post not the poster. Anyway I was pointing out that wool is not usually unethical and shearing sheep is actually beneficial to them.

I didn't say anything about wool being unethical though? Please stop randomly quoting me for no reason.

Hermittrismegistus · 19/10/2023 10:58

Is that true? I thought a lot of real hair wigs were created by people choosing to donate their hair to charities like The Little Princess Trust? I know several people who lobbed their ponytails off and donated their hai

I watched a documentary a few years about the human hair trade. A huge chunk of the human hair that's used in extensions and wigs is from Hindu women in India. The women are encourage to grow hair long and "sacrifice" it to the temple (for a reason Incant remember). The temple then sells the hair and uses the money raised to feed the poorer people in their community.

Tinysoxxx · 19/10/2023 11:00

OP Do you wear red lipstick? You’ll be pressing squashed insects onto your lips.
Drink milk? That’s lactation juice from cows’ udders.
Sausages? Well you get the picture.

You compared wearing wool or leather to wearing human hair. I gave a reason why I think wool, at least, is not quite the same.

This is a discussion forum. Why post if you don’t want people to engage with you?

Screwballs · 19/10/2023 11:02

As someone with little choice on the matter, 24 years into Alopecia Universalis, I really appreciate hearing how horrid you think human hair wigs are. If it hasnt taken years to be happy leaving the house and not being ashamed of myself as it is, at least I can remember that kind people like you feel they have cause to judge me when they have no idea what they are talking about.

Banana1979 · 19/10/2023 11:03

Most hair extensions come from India, these people as part of their religion,
shave off their hair , they’re paid a little bit for it but it’s their tradition to take off the hair. It is this hair that is then processed

not all hair extensions are human though (I wear them) but I wear is synthetic ones because it’s cheaper and easier to manage
unfortunately, wearing these extensions, every day for 20 years has caused a big bald patch on my head so I don’t recommend them unless you actually need them. they ruined my hair and I now have traction alopecia.
It’s also ironic that I now qualify for an NHS wig because of the traction that I caused myself because I hate the way I looked without them.

saying that lots of people wear human hair wigs as a protective style, especially black women who have difficulty growing their hair
I blame society for putting so much emphasis on have good hair to be beautiful
people should be able to wear extensions as they like without judgement. However, they should understand the risks as I found out

5YearsLeft · 19/10/2023 11:05

@Iamclearlyamug I just want to say that I’m sure your daughter looks absolutely lovely.

In terms of things that give me the “ick,” I’m a bit “grossed out” by the fact that OP has no mouth, so she has to talk out of her arse, as this post makes obvious.

But no, a cancer patient or a child with alopecia or even just someone who struggles to like their hair and feels they look their best with extensions is not “gross” or “revolting.” What a truly bizarre, judgmental, and even hateful way to look at the world.

I honestly don't see a problem with it. Although I have now got images of Homer Simpson being controlled by Snake's toupee in one of the Halloween episodes...

Come on most women on the street haven't had their wig charitably donated to them fgs🤣🤣🤣

HercuIesMorse · 19/10/2023 11:10

I have no problem with wigs. Human hair looks better/more natural generally. Women not getting paid enough for the wigs (which sell for £££s) is a problem.

I'm sure you didn't mean to be goady op but it's common for black women to wear extensions or wigs as a protective style or to add length so... you saying black womens hairstyles are gross doesn't sit right with me

It's hair. How is that gross? You don't think it's washed and processed before sale? You don't think people wash their wigs???

Nowherenew · 19/10/2023 11:19

I always donate my hair because it grows really quickly.

Perhaps I should just throw it away instead of giving it to someone who needs it 🙄

loudmajority · 19/10/2023 11:20

Can't see how to edit my post. Really not meant to be goady.

If I could edit I would exclude wigs from the post because a well produced and fitted wig of course does look better than hair extensions. Also I would make it MUCH clearer that wearing of wigs for medical reasons is NOT what I am talking about and in no way am I intending to be hurtful to anybody. I am sorry.

The growing billion dollar human hair industry, just for the purposes of FASHION - with ultra long hair extensions and weaves, gives me the ick. This huge volume of hair comes from impoverished countries and vulnerable women.

BodegaSushi · 19/10/2023 11:22

Considering that a large proportion of black women use extensions/weaves and wigs as a protective measure for their hair, I find your opinion revolting.

So how do hair extensions worn for medical reasons suddenly not look disgusting? I mean, so you expect women to carry a little certificate that protects them from your judgement?

i have an autoimmune disease and have loads of bald patches. I wear clip ins and frankly I'd be happier if people thought it was just vanity.

Ifyoulikealotofchocolateonyourbiscuit · 19/10/2023 11:28

My sister has human hair extensions because she’s only in her 20s and her hair is still very short after chemo. Sure she’d be thrilled to hear how ‘revolting’ she is

Gruntsandgroans · 19/10/2023 11:29

I get where you are coming from OP. Personally, I wouldn't wear someone elses hair as a fashion choice, the thought of it is a bit stomach-churning, pulling someone elses hair out of your mouth 😐. I wouldn't even notice if someone else did though honestly and so long as it is ethically sourced and they like it, I don't see the problem with it.

FrodoBagginsToeHair · 19/10/2023 11:51

How are people managing to twist this into a race issue without acknowledging where the hair is coming from? It’s not just black people who wear wigs and extensions! Trying to make out like the OP is being racist on that basis is ridiculous.

the hair comes from poor women who probably have nothing of value except their hair - taken by people who pay them a few dollars and use it to make wigs and extensions that sell for hundreds. Sometimes it’s stolen from them. Literally having their cut off by thieves when they’re out and about. Sometimes it comes from internment camps and prisons. The women are being exploited - it doesn’t really matter who wears the hair later.

If you’re wearing it for fashion synthetic hair is very realistic these days although bad for the environment. If you can’t use freely donated hair (little princess trust etc) or you aren’t sure where the hair comes from then you shouldn’t be wearing it. If it’s ethically sourced then do what you like.
