Surely Joe Biden just wants to sit at home?

ssd · 18/10/2023 09:06

I mean at his age. Wouldn't he rather sit in the house, comfy slippers, newspaper etc and just relax? I just watched him meeting the Israeli leaders, he is so stiff and slow. Taking aside the politics, which is everything here but its not what im discussing, surely Biden is just too old for that job? Is that ageist or just common sense,? America must have many brilliant politicians who could do a more robust job.
(And im not even mentioning trump)

Biden is unintelligible.

Comparing him to other old guys isn't helpful.

I'm saying Biden is too old for the job.

Turn BBC live news on.

EasternStandard · 18/10/2023 14:02

I don’t think Biden wants to be sitting at home as in op, otherwise he’d be doing that

But his age does seem a factor when people are asked in polls etc

SerendipityJane · 18/10/2023 14:05

Their political system is ridiculous.

And the UKs isn't ?

Why so? Which is your preference

stayathomer · 18/10/2023 14:08

Age IS an issue though- your mind needs to be at its sharpest, your body can’t fail you when you have to be ready to address problems that are literally life threatening.

Itoni · 18/10/2023 14:10

Would you like to be outed from a job based on age alone?

Who decides where the “too old” line to do a job is?

Who decides what jobs are so important that they require youth.

So a I do a job at -65 or 75 or 85-that I can still do and am really good at. I have great wisdom and insight in it…

but I’m too old and it’s too important for me to do?

It would be better for a 35 year old to do it?
Just because of age - and not competence.

Ageism - you’re too old to do the job.

Fairness - you are the best person for the job because of your competencies, knowledge, skills etc.

Fairness - you are not the best person for the job because you do not have the competencies knowledge, skills etc

Surely it’s about competence.

Otherwise we’re all in for a rocky ride.

The retirement age for women is?
Women have how much in pension/savings/assets?
How much is renting a property?
How much is the weekly shop?

Interview panel - she’s too old to do the job.

No, but surely you're not defending Biden? He's clearly completely passed it.

Obviously not but don't kid yourself that age and competence don't do hand in hand

What a load of dribble.

stopitstopitnooow · 18/10/2023 14:18

I think you're in denial

Erivo · 18/10/2023 14:19

There are plenty of jobs that require an age limit or more rigorous health checks at a certain age. I currently need a medical every 5 years purely down to age and if want to remain it goes to 3 years at 70. Purely down to age.

Itoni · 18/10/2023 14:25

No opinion on Biden either way. The US people have voted him in. Democracy.

So when Boris Johnson is -65/75/85- any “gaffes” and incompetence he shows would be because of age?

The ones people accused him of in his 30s and 40s /50s were because…?

margegunderson · 18/10/2023 14:31

Experience is quite handy in this quite of thing and he's got a fair bit of it. Traditionally politicians were generally old.
Also - why the hell WOULD you want to just sit in your chair unless there was something actually wrong with you?
Some people on MN are so fucking ageist. I can't work out whether they don't have the imagination to look beyond their own lives or if they're just scared by the prospect of grey hairs.

So they can tell you to stop because of your age?
Or your incompetence?

Itoni · 18/10/2023 14:39

My aged mother says when she encounters ageism

I used to think that when I was your age.

watcherintherye · 18/10/2023 14:59

It’s not ageist to suggest that someone who is not at the top of their game maybe shouldn’t be President of the USA. POTUS is an office which requires someone to be intellectually and physically sharp and robust. Some people remain so into old age, others not so much…

For all their faults (many, many of them) at least our PMs usually give you confidence that they have a well-informed world view, and an understanding of its complexities, even if you fundamentally disagree with them. I just don’t get that from Biden (or Trump, goes without saying). I mean, the difference between them and Obama is mind-boggling. Biden has virtually admitted that he’d prefer to be in bed (press conference a month ago in Vietnam)! You just don’t say that, as a world statesman, no matter how knackered you are!

CanadianJohn · 18/10/2023 15:05

The U.S. Constitution states that the president must be at least 35 years old It's a shame they didn't put in a maximum age too, maybe 65 or 70.

In 2016 the US had a choice between the ghastly Trump-thing and the even more ghastly Clinton-creature. Trump squeaked in, despite losing the popular vote, partly the Republicans took advantage of the peculiarities of the US Electoral College system.

In 2020 the choice was between the two old guys, and than heavens Biden won.

God help us if Trump wins in 2024. He and the Forty Thieves will take America back to the dark ages.

Urgh he's currently whispering nonsense at people on bbc live news

WW3 is more than likely going to happen under senile Biden "leadership". He doesn't know what day of the week it is or where he is. He is grossly incompetent, his administration gave Iran 6billion & they have funded Hamas. Blame lies with Biden. I can only hope Biden isn't re-elected next year.

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 18/10/2023 15:13

I like Biden. I think he's currently doing a good job in general and isn't too old as of now. For another term? I'm not sure.

I appreciate his wisdom, experience, and empathy.

He's been sticking his foot in his mouth and saying daft things for years. He's quirky like that.

stopitstopitnooow · 18/10/2023 15:17

So cute and quirky for the leader of the free world to say daft things

Highandlows · 18/10/2023 15:56

@hattie43 The president of the USA earns $400k a year.

Abhannmor · 18/10/2023 16:32

I'd be surprised if old Joe really gave Iran $6bn . Especially since the 🇺🇸 have a trade embargo against Iran and even punish 3rd parties who trade with that country.
Is this Iranian reserves in other currencies the US has unfrozen I wonder. As Churchill said ' a lie is half way round the world while the truth is putting its boots on.'

And he'd know.....

Observation from outside the UK...the British Royal Family seem to keep going when most people would have retired.
But Joe Biden seems to have forgotten he has a vice president...where is she...to take on some of the load.

Yes but the British Royals are hardly making life or death decisions on a daily basis

Laiste · 18/10/2023 16:48

Would you want an 80+ year old who falls over a lot to be the one trying to rescue you out of a burning building? He wants to be a fireman but it would be ageist to say he's too old ....
Being a politician isn't strictly speaking a physical job and falling up the plane steps ect: doesn't mean you can't be a good politician at the end of the flight But if you have reached an age when you are too tired to think straight and make sense at the end of a flight then this is just one way your age is adversely affecting the job.

Being a politician is all about what you say, how you say it and when you say it. If the reason this guy is too tired is likely because he's 80 then why can't we say the truth? We're all going to get old.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 18/10/2023 17:08

Exactly this - and it doesn't even have to be about age per se. If for example (and god forbid) someone suffered an injury which affected their function when much younger, some of us would be saying exactly the same

Defending Biden out of fear of getting Trump instead may be understandable, but it doesn't really help the issue when, realistically, the informities aren't going to get any better

LilyLemonade · 18/10/2023 17:17

Enyo2 · 18/10/2023 09:51

So your question is about ageism….

Upon observation he prefers to be the President of the United States. to be the President.

As for competence hugging without bending would make him incompetent if he was the President of the United States of hugging lithely.

😆
