Madonna"s daughter, Mercy

I'm not a huge Madonna fan but clips of her tour are coming up om my Google feed. Apparently her three daughters are performing with her. Fair enough, i thought. Then, i couldn't believe my eyes seeing a clip of her TEN year old daughter was voguing on stage in a skintight catsuit and thigh high shiny leather boots with a massive spike heel. This is a child dancing provocatively dressed like a, stripper in front of thousands of people. It's horrible. I know Madonna isn't mother of the year but she really okayed this routine and outfit for her child... Aibu in thinking it's really wrong?

Agreed. Totally inappropriate for a 10yr old!

MelanieSal · 18/10/2023 00:15

I have a similar reaction to most tween girls' jazz dance group performances in dance comps. For me it's about normalising for these little girls how to gain approval from the world. I don't want to teach them that highlighting boobs/butts/thighs/groin (ie erotic zones) through clothing and dance moves is the 'normal' or expected way to get attention and approval from the rest of the world. That is just handing over all the wins to the patriarchy and continuing a culture where a woman's primary value is sexual attractiveness and availability.

Normalise dance skill and quality performance by all means. I'm here for that. But fishnets and twerking should be left far out of it for tweens. (And for young teens imo)

I’m not a pearl clutched by anyone’s standards but I thought it was super inappropriate too when I saw it. She’s a great performer but that’s was most definitely sexualised from the dancing to the outfit. I think I read she’s eleven and I went back to read it twice because I was like really? Eleven?!

plenty of kids are amazing performers - think Matilda’s, billy elliots, etc - they aren’t in knee high boots grinding around. It wouldn’t be allowed actually. Kids can have fun and be professional dancers and performers. They don’t need to be sexy.

in fact while we’re at it - adult (female) performers could try their hand at not being sexy every time they perform. How about just performing. Adele did pretty well off that.

Amen to that.

porridgeisbae · 18/10/2023 01:08

People saying the girl is being sexualised aren't the ones doing the sexualising.

If there are high heeled boots involved then that's an item that's inherently sexualising in the way it operates culturally. Most people don't let their kids dress like that.

MessyMyrtle · 18/10/2023 01:20

we are all going to make mistakes when parenting. I don’t think this is it.

I just looked at 30 sec clip of the child and apart from the boots - I wouldn’t have let my child wear them - but that’s me. I do associate those boots with the movie ‘pretty woman’. Otherwise, she was in a leotard. I see similar body shapes in ballet or gymnastics. It’s the connotations we put on it. She’s a hell of a dancer and it’s not a sexualised dance. I see references to a culture not mine. Our world is now global. We must stop judging something we may not understand. And get our kids into dancing for fun and fitness if they enjoy it. Great way to build body strength and have fun doing it.

Tut Tutting at another woman’s parenting is such bullshit.

One thing, Madonna is going to bring up kids with a strong sense of self I imagine. I wish I’d had half Madonna’s chutzpah to hand on to my kids.

Ramalangadingdong · 18/10/2023 01:22

Just had a look at the clip. It is not sexy at all. She is too young to pull off sexy moves so it just comes across as a kid playing dress up.

The concert looks amazing. Madonna is looking good. It is great to see a woman in her 60’s on stage. No matter how much surgery she has she can’t hide the ageing process. I wish she would give in to it. She has a fantastic strong body.

Ramalangadingdong · 18/10/2023 01:30

Just looked at the Blue Ivy clip. Wow! That is talent right there. I love the fact that they gave her a baggy costume in order to avoid sexualising her body. If she is dancing like this aged 11 she is going to be a force to be reckoned with in a few years time and is going to be a superstar in her own right.

MissTrip82 · 18/10/2023 03:46

She’s a good dancer.

She’s not sexualised; she’s 10. You can’t sexualise an innocent child no matter what she wears. The person who posted a photo describing other outfits worn by children as ‘sexy’ is flat out sick.

Switcheroonie · 18/10/2023 04:02

I'd complain about paying for tickets to this and end up watching a kid flop around stage. No she is not a good dancer. The clip I saw she wasn't particularly talented.

Madonna is getting older so in order to catch her breath on stage she's gotta drag out her kids to do acts.

🙄🙄🙄 get a grip she is having the time of her life dancing, unclench fgs

Milarky · 18/10/2023 04:07

Totally appropriate dancing and clothes for a 10 year old. Made me very uncomfortable to watch.

octodrive · 18/10/2023 07:48

Actually Madonna is unusually behind here. As people have mentioned, Beyoncé has done it, as has PINK, J-Lo and Alicia Keys. I think this is one of the rare times Madonna is following a trend rather then making it.

RoyalImpatience · 18/10/2023 07:49

I must admit I was shocked. Why does an 11 year old need to wear thigh high shiny boots.

She could have worn any cool outfit I don't think it's suitable at all.

RandomButtons · 18/10/2023 08:00

The kid is fully dressed? Very talented dancer. Nothing over sexualised about that.

“You can’t sexualise an innocent child no matter what she wears.”

I can’t tell if you’re extremely naive or trolling.

Men sexualise children daily. In every type of clothing.

Teddleshon · 18/10/2023 11:15

Bizarre pov that an innocent child can’t be sexualised because of their age or by what they wear.

porridgeisbae · 18/10/2023 14:02

Tut Tutting at another woman’s parenting is such bullshit.

Not really, if it's bad, and the woman has the resources to do better.

Exactly. By this logic we would ignore children we thought were at risk because it's 'another woman's parenting' so that makes it their choice, so it's ok... Much of Madonna"s career is based on sex, so she knows what she's doing. I'm sure Madonna doesn't care what i think anyway . What I did like about Blue Ivy is she was dressed in age appropriate /toned down versions of Beyonce's outfits. She's also a far better dancer than Madonna"s daughter.

With reference to the pp who posted the pictures, you do know that was Madonna"s twins posing provocatively in adult poses in adult style swimwear? One look at that photo says it all, those kids are being sexualised and exploited.

No. No one in their right mind would ignore a child they thought at risk.

But that’s not what is happening here in regard to Madonna and her daughter.

it’s just tut tutting about another woman’s parenting on the internet, which serves no purpose.

What does Beyoncé’s daughter being a ‘far’ better dancer than Madonna’s daughter have to do with anything?

BTW, I haven’t seen Blue Ivy dance but nothing like comparing kids’ abilities and finding one to be better than the other, on the internet.

Bbq1 · 18/10/2023 22:54

I'm pointing out that Beyonce doesn't have to dress Blue Ivy up in thigh high heeled boots to prove anything because Ivy's dancing speaks for itself. Madonna obviously has to resort to dressing her daughter like a mini version of herself.

It's strange on Mn because so many people make comments along the lines of, "We most protect our girls" etc and i can guarantee none of the pp's would be buying those boots if their own 10/11 daughter asked for them. However, it's okay for Madonna to exploit Estere because... she's Madonnas. I'm not "tut tutting", i just think it's wrong. Most people on here clearly think dressing kids like that is fine..

I think there’s a difference between letting your 11 yr old wear that sort of outfit out to the cinema with her mates….

And a stage performance.

The boots are designer and are the same as the ones her big sister Lourdes was wearing. She probably felt special and included.

I don’t see it as an unsafe space for her. She has security, her family and so on around constantly.

She’s very talented and I think it shines through how close they are as a family and how supportive they are as one another.

There are bigger fish to fry than chastising a preteen for wearing heels. It’s pretty normal at puberty for girls to start to dress up.

I think it’s nice her Mum is instilling confidence in her to express herself. I don’t foresee Madonna raising wallflowers.
