Madonna"s daughter, Mercy

Bbq1 · 17/10/2023 20:44

I'm not a huge Madonna fan but clips of her tour are coming up om my Google feed. Apparently her three daughters are performing with her. Fair enough, i thought. Then, i couldn't believe my eyes seeing a clip of her TEN year old daughter was voguing on stage in a skintight catsuit and thigh high shiny leather boots with a massive spike heel. This is a child dancing provocatively dressed like a, stripper in front of thousands of people. It's horrible. I know Madonna isn't mother of the year but she really okayed this routine and outfit for her child... Aibu in thinking it's really wrong?

I’m not a pearl clutched by anyone’s standards but I thought it was super inappropriate too when I saw it. She’s a great performer but that’s was most definitely sexualised from the dancing to the outfit. I think I read she’s eleven and I went back to read it twice because I was like really? Eleven?!

plenty of kids are amazing performers - think Matilda’s, billy elliots, etc - they aren’t in knee high boots grinding around. It wouldn’t be allowed actually. Kids can have fun and be professional dancers and performers. They don’t need to be sexy.

in fact while we’re at it - adult (female) performers could try their hand at not being sexy every time they perform. How about just performing. Adele did pretty well off that.

Absolutely, every performer should be like those nice , white British people and just ignore their own history, personality, race etc etc. Black women, or rather women of colour, have been overly sexualised since the beginning of time. They just happen to have different features and move differently. Adele isn't exactly fun.

Soontobe60 · 17/10/2023 21:55

It’s interesting that only the other day there was a thread about not wanting images of children on social media because paedophiles… and now when someone famous for blatantly displaying her sexuality has her teen child taking part in her show, it’s the viewer who’s sexualising the child.
I don’t believe any child or teen should be placed in a situation where they are performing in front of a vast crowd for all sorts of reasons. I don’t give a fuck who the mother is - that child is being exploited.

LegendsBeyond · 17/10/2023 21:55

YANBU. It’s inappropriate & makes me feel uncomfortable.

Teddleshon · 17/10/2023 21:56

YANBU

Luckypoppy · 17/10/2023 21:56

It's no different to a lot of dance show costumes! Yes to some people the boots may be 'sexy' but they are just boots. The dance moves themselves are also found in most dance shows.

Actually I think Madonna is a very good mother. From what I understand, least she’s not on line slagging off other women’s parenting skills and not even getting the child’s name right,,

This ^ So much this

People are utterly batshit on this site.

I don’t think Madonna was thinking about the history, personality or race when she ‘adopted’ these children from Africa.
More like thinking that a rich white woman could make herself look good by taking poor black children away from their families.

Wowwwthat was a huge stretch. Hope you didn’t pull anything!?

This is pearly clutching and the watcher sexualises. Many of us don’t see it. It’s what you, the watcher sees.

So you’re accusing me of being a perverted weirdo sexualising an eleven year old….but at the same time I’m a pearl clutcher and should lighten up?

this thread is mad

HowAmYa · 17/10/2023 22:08

Wow she duck walked and vogued. And done it brilliantly. Nothing AT ALL sexual. It's stupid and gross to think so

Please see how/why/what vogueing represents. There are so many layers to that performance, the historical significance for members of the black and Latino community in that performance, something that a pearl clutching woman like yourself wouldn't even begin to understand.
The heels aren't stripper heels either.
And besides, you'd probably have a heart attack if you saw What most 6-12 year olds wear to national dance competitions! Estere, in comparison is covered up only showing her talent and her beautiful braids.

Stop shaming her!!!

anonymousamy · 17/10/2023 22:14

Just watched the clip - Madonna’s daughter is a very talented dancer.

anonymousamy · 17/10/2023 22:17

The thing I find most weird about this thread is people reading anything more into the clip than a very talented 11 year old having a whale of a time on stage 😐

Why would a child be encouraged to perform this type of dance?

A Brief History of Voguing

Historical scholarship has unearthed a world of saloons, cabarets, speakeasies, rent parties, and drag balls that existed since the late 1800’s as spaces where LGBTQ identities were not only visible, but openly celebrated.

HowAmYa · 17/10/2023 22:26

Why not?

She had a brilliant time, had fun dancing and doing something that was part of a Black and Latino underground culture that her own mother helped bring to the mainstream.

At the same time it needn't be that deep. She is a kid who danced on stage and had a great time doing it. Why is that so wrong?

LavendersBlueeee · 17/10/2023 22:31

Kinda disturbing to me that some of you think this is OK. We clearly still have a long way to go to protect our daughters and their futures. Pretty disappointed to read some people’s viewpoints.

whynotwhatknot · 17/10/2023 22:37

im more bothered that she came on an hour late and cut half the show

Alopeciabop · 17/10/2023 22:39

Represents? I feel like an eleven year old doesn’t need to representing anything other than playing and doing some maths homework.

if you want to use the guide of “cultural background” to encourage children to wear skin tight catsuits and high heeled shoes (which are not good for their growing feet just as a bonus) then you go ahead.

and (though hilariously you have no idea what my cultural background is but whatever) I don’t think it’s ok for little “white girls” to west high heeled boots and skin tight catsuits either. But it must be me at fault as it’s their culture nowadays - certainly see enough preteens walking around here with Lycra shorts up their bum and crop tops.

should we talk about my feeling on pageants next? Or would my crazy “let children be children” views offend you too much?

anonymousamy · 17/10/2023 22:40

I genuinely find it odd that some posters are reading so much into a (very talented) 11 year old kid having a great time on stage.

Bbq1 · 17/10/2023 22:48

Robinni · 17/10/2023 21:40

Firstly, Mercy is 17. It was Estero, 11, on the stage. I went and watched it on account of this thread.

She was voguing.

And wearing Versace that covered most of her body.

I think you have preconceived notions about Madonna that are prejudicing your perception of Estere.

Beyonce’s daughter Blue is also dancing at her concerts in stage outfits… they are preparing their daughters for the creative careers they aspire to.

Looked like Estere did a great job and had fun! 10 from me.

The difference is that Blue Ivy is covered up in age appropriate clothing and footwear (which looks way more modern and fresh than Estero"s dated styling)The dances she does aren't about her squatting around the stage. It's all about the actual dancing. As it happens, Blue Ivy is a phenomenal dancer but she's not being exploited in any way by Beyonce.

I'm far from a pearl clutcher and it was the first thing I thought of. Far too sexualised for an 11 year old.

She's incredibly talented but I was uncomfortable when I saw it.

maryberryslayers · 17/10/2023 22:59

The girl is an incredible dancer, performing on stage, with her mum. She's wearing a costume, like performers usually do. She's well covered, more so than many dance costumes.

I wish I could do that, let alone in stiletto boots!

Starbeeees · 17/10/2023 23:11

This is pretty far from what the strippers I know do, but go off…. 😂

pinkdelight · 17/10/2023 23:14

I saw her on opening night and her daughter's dancing is incredible, not at all shocking or reprehensible in any way just awesome and extremely talented.

Meanwhile Mercy is impressive on the piano and David plays guitar on a very moving tribute to both his mothers and Madonna's own mother. Lourdes was also on stage having fun with her mum.

The whole thing - quite apart from being a jaw dropping musical
spectacle and celebration of Madonna's career - was a real family affair and not something to be wagging fingers about. Although god knows Madonna is fine with people doing that and wouldn't give a monkeys if you disapprove.

LuckyOrMaybe · 17/10/2023 23:54

Just because lots of 6-12 yr olds are wearing ridiculously sexualised outfits in dance competitions means it's all right???

(just one of the problems this exacerbates, is, if risque styles are deemed appropriate for pre-teens, then teenagers who want to push boundaries or shock, go looking for something more)

MorrisZapp · 17/10/2023 23:59

It's grim. Clearly a talented and confident dancer but those moves are age inappropriate. No shame on her, she's a kid. Shame on the adults who presented this to the public.
