To have a Gatsby themed wedding?

A blatant thread about a million threads.....
It'll be childfree too.

I'm on call tonight after deciding not to bother going home as I have a couple of patients here who I suspect will have a crisis tonight...

So partner and I (he's not Dear as he's sending photos of himself cuddled up on the sofa with a couple of dogs and a glass of 19 Crimes) are messaging about wedding plans.

I want this - jazz band, champagne towers, total hedonism and partying through the night in a posh hotel in London whilst looking suitably elegant in silver dress and cigarette holder....ignoring the fact that I'm short, fat and middle aged.

He wants - cosy castle by candlelight, in Scotland so he gets the chance to frighten my friends with what's under his kilt. Whisky instead of champagne and drunken debauchery and country dancing.

So my question is...
YANBU - Gatsby so much better
YABU - go for the Highland fling

All lighthearted of course.

The problem with 1920s themed events is that no one can do it properly so it'll end up looking like a cheap fancy dress party rather than the elegant affair you're imagining.

I say this as a historical re-enactor.

I'd go for the Scottish idea.

What about Roaring Fires and Roaring Twenties - people can pick a side, bride or groom

AnnaMagnani · 16/10/2023 20:53

A lot of people women look basically hideous in 20s fashion as the aesthetic is straight up and down, no tits, tummy or bum.

Also all the characters in Gatsby are horrible.

So 20s glamour sounds fabulous but Scottish is a lot easier.

I like this idea

Go Scottish and toast with a Gatsby drink.

I've definitely read the book, don't worry. And seen the film. It's the whole art deco, hedonistic thing that I like the sound of....but then castle, candlelight, whiskey also attractive 🤔

Like the idea of combining the two.

Most of the people coming are our friends and they are very much like us in terms of loving a themed party. They may not be the glam bunch (we're in our 50's and many of our friends are in the medical/veterinary fields) but they are definitely up for a craic...

Which then adds another dimension...I may be weegie born and bred but hail from a confused mixture of Irish and Italian....whilst his lordship is 6 generations Highlander.

As someone with very much tits, tummy and bum I can attest to my fantasy of slinky silver dress being just that 🤣

It's simply not a wedding until your crush runs over her husband's mistress

Lizzieregina · 16/10/2023 21:01

I went to a roaring 20s themed wedding years ago and it was great!

I think I’d enjoy either of your wedding choices.

MightyFine · 16/10/2023 21:02

Highland so much better! Gatsby theme parties were everywhere when the movie came out. It's a bit meh as a theme (imo)

I have to confess to having a major soft spot for all things Scottish though, so that probably swayed my opinion 😉

orchardsquare · 16/10/2023 21:03

Do the Gatsby wedding and go to Scotland for your honeymoon.

MCOut · 16/10/2023 21:06

YANBU I actually viewed a London venue the Andaz which had two spaces that might fit the theme OP.

Absolutely....all good weddings need to end in tragic accident...

Or is that just my family?

Do the hedonist option while you can. Dance and party as much as you can.
Keep the Highland option for an anniversary when you’re older and want a quiet life.

Gatsby all the way

That's our theory. We're both doing this for a second time and in our 50's so it definitely is partly while we can!

Well, if you are Scottish and living in Scotland, I can't see any reason to go to London for your wedding.

I'm also rather horrified at the idea of a fancy dress party for a wedding, so my vote is definitely for your partner's vision over yours even though I don't like whiskey

Is he thinking Four Weddings and a Funeral? Do you want to be on call on your wedding day?

laclochette · 17/10/2023 00:17

@Luckingfovely I agree! 20s country house party at a Scottish pile sorta vibes. Best of both worlds.

Although I also agree with PPs who say that asking guests to dress in 20s clothes is a bad idea. Most people don't or can't - I appreciate it's expensive to get your hair done, buy really nice new clothes just for a theme - get it right and it ends up looking naff. Fringed dresses from eBay and women with their hair down long - totally anachronistic - and a sequinned headband on, my worst nightmare 🤣 but then I'm very knowledgeable about historical fashion, others may be less picky and more chill/reasonable about such matters.

Also, ceilidhs are the best... So hopefully you can have one whatever aesthetic you go for!
