To think DD is a pilferer

DD3 has a money box and if we have any small loose change (10p, 5p, 2p, 1p) we let her (supervised) put it in the box. The other day, we opened it with her to count it and lo and behold, there were quids, 50p’s and even a £2 coin! Am I being unreasonable to think she’s been going through coat pockets and purses? 😂

She might just find them on the floor. But if she is actually stealing from purses and pockets then I wouldn't be 😂. What's that going to teach her?

Blackandwhitemakesgrey · 16/10/2023 10:32

My DC went through this. We had numerous conversations. Three years later and it appears to have stopped but if other DC is missing money I know where to find it!

It worries me tbh.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 16/10/2023 10:34

When you say DD3 do you mean she’s your third DD or that she’s 3 years old?

MatildaTheCat · 16/10/2023 10:35

You are probably correct. She’s learned young that it’s satisfying to stash money away. She just hasn’t learned about how best to acquire it.

Have a chat and maybe give her little chores to earn her loose change but warn her that taking money isn’t ok and you will need to take it back and stop the money box until she’s bigger and can understand it better.

That she’s 3.

She is too young to understand the value of different coins. There is no point having the conversation of only certain coins can be put in the coin box.

Aitrop · 16/10/2023 10:37

I have a slight suspicion that Granny might be a bit more generous with the denomination of coin she donates. I might check with her first!

She's practically a baby, so you can't blame her. She just doesn't understand.

Yeah, and this was lighthearted.

I’m mainly concerned that I could’ve used some of them to pay the window cleaner.

Rich people don’t get rich by playing by the rules. Teach her to hide the money better, perhaps there are to toddler friendly books about offshore accounts? I’m sure some Tory must have written something like ‘Winky and the Little Hedge Fund’…

I'd love to be finds quids and 50ps on the floor😀 Seriously though have a chat with dgm first before you slap dd in the stocks on bread and water rations.
It great though she is encouraged to save her small coins though it all adds up, so good for her. 🙂

pontipinemum · 16/10/2023 11:10

I'd be really concerned, and I am surprised you aren't taking this more seriously. Call the nursery today, this instant because it sounds like she is running an illicit dummy racket and fleecing 1 yr olds who have recently been weaned. Taking advantage of their vulnerability and raking in the big profits 😂😂

Nowherenew · 16/10/2023 11:12

I don’t want to be the one to turn this thread into something heavy but please keep the money box and coins out of her reach.

My DD (older than your DD) accidentally swallowed a coin and it got lodged in her windpipe and had to be rushed to hospital.

She was able to cough it up and then swallow it down so it ended up in her stomach but it was very scary and could have resulted in her chocking to death.

Georgyporky · 16/10/2023 11:13

Have you asked her where she got the coins ?

paintingvenice · 16/10/2023 11:15

Id check with grandparents first, they probably aren’t telling you what their putting in there because 1) why would you…or 2)they probably worry that you’d take it when you need some spare change.

Consideringachange2023 · 16/10/2023 11:20

ha my DC are like this, they call all coins “pennies” and don’t understand the different values yet.

I let them keep whatever coins they find but they are not to take from bags and pockets etc!

you’ll have to start calling her Fagan

FrangipaniBlue · 16/10/2023 11:20

I think it's a combination of GPs and she's finding stuff.

There is always loose change hanging around our house, whoever needs it uses it and no one ever really questions where it's gone..... she'd had a field day 😂

Graciebobcat · 16/10/2023 11:21

Just ask her where she found them. She probably finds the £1 coins and 50ps shinier and more interesting.

Good point - it’s completely out of her reach and as I say, I’m almost certain grandparents have been supplying the extras, so she’s supervised when she puts them in and takes them out.

my DD learnt at about that age to shake Daddy’s trousers that he left on the floor while he was in bed and put the paper money back and take the coins. By the time we went on holiday she had accumulated about £70 in her money box. It didn’t lead to a long term thieving habit and we can laugh about it now she is an adult.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/10/2023 11:25

But yes. Do be careful where she puts them. We regularly have toddlers admitted to my ward with swallowed coins.

SnakesandKnives · 16/10/2023 11:31

We had some friends over for an afternoon and they had a 4yo old daughter with them. While we were chatting she discovered the change pot near the front door and then spent the next hour industriously removing the coins and hiding them behind our sofa in a big pile 😂 we think she may grow up to be a dragon
