To be shocked that Australia voted NO on this referendum?

"The Voice to Parliament was proposed in the Uluru Statement from the Heart, a 2017 document crafted by Indigenous leaders that set out a roadmap for reconciliation with wider Australia.

Australia's Indigenous citizens, who make up 3.8% of the country's 26 million population, have inhabited the land for about 60,000 years but are not mentioned in the constitution and are, by most socio-economic measures, the most disadvantaged people in the country."

I have family out there. I just assumed that they would have voted YES. I hope they did. Perhaps I should ask them.

You say that you didn’t see Aboriginal people. They are only 3.5% of the population so not every other person on the street.

A growing number of people identify as Aboriginal. The number outpaces Aboriginal births. Do that means an awful lot of people are finding hidden ancestry and claiming it despite other claims that Aboriginals are discriminated against.

But what do Aboriginal people look like? You may not actually recognize them as Aboriginal if you pass them on the street. Brooke Boney is aboriginal. So is Lidia Thorpe. And Kerry White who ran for One Nation. They are all part of the 3.6%.

In terms of jobs, a number of jobs are reserved for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander candidates. This is mentioned in job ads. Positive discrimination is legal. Diversity statistics are considered particularly important in the media and academic circles.

Thank you for your post.

As of 2021 in New South Wales there were the largest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population (339,700 people).

I am just surprised I didn't see someone I recognised as being obviously from this group in the city.

Thank you for the examples of Brooke Boney, Lidia Thorpe and Kerry White. You are right, I wouldn't have recognised them as being Aboriginal.

I suppose that's kind of my point though. The people who "pass as white" are much less likely to face racial abuse and be accepted.

Another takeaway I got from the AUS Bureau of Stats was this:

23.4 median age (Aboriginal)
39.2 median age (non-Indigenous)

NSW

"The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population had a younger age structure than the non-Indigenous population, with both larger proportions of young people and smaller proportions of older people. This reflects higher birth rates and lower life expectancy in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population compared with that in the non-Indigenous population."

The White Australia Policy ended in 1973, but this is of course still in living memory for many.

@ALittleTeawithmilk Great post. Summed it up with nuance really well.

I don't accept that Australia is more racist than Britain, having spent time in the former and lived in the latter.

British people are simply better at choosing their words and masking their prejudices.

But going "ooh Australia, Eastern Europe, Japan, Russia, other-uncivilised-foreign-place, they're so racist" is purely misdirection. For a non-racist country, Britain continues to bomb and coerce an awful lot of foreigners, and considers itself superior morally- as is clearly evinced when you label other people more racist than thou.

Teddleshon · 16/10/2023 14:10

Where is Britain currently bombing? Do you mean Ukraine?

This country voted for Brexit! I think we’re a pretty racist country.
The result of this vote is awful. I feel awful for all those who campaigned. It’s grim.
But when I lived in Australia the overt racism at times was quite shocking.

How on earth is Brexit even relevant? Moreover, and I don't want to derail this thread even further, the idea that leavers are racist is simplistic.

A thread about Australia but there's still plenty bringing the UK into it. Really pathetic the way the UK is always kicked around like a political football. Why do you even need to make a comparison between the two countries?

Teddleshon · 16/10/2023 14:19

Simplistic as well as illogical given that all the people who benefited from Freedom of movement were white.

I take it you're referring to Brexit. Something completely irrelevant to this thread, yet how many times has it been mentioned? Jeez move on.

Wonkasworld · 16/10/2023 14:23

For the amount of times the DM reader base is mentioned on MN, there's sure a lot reflecting that exact thinking.

Teddleshon · 16/10/2023 14:26

I was agreeing with @Wonkasworld that it is irrelevant!

Teddleshon · 16/10/2023 14:26

Oops I mean @Fifireee . I think racism is largely irrelevant to the Voice too.

Fine. Can you please explain exactly what the referendum was about and what a yes vote would have meant going forwards. What the plan was. How that plan (whatever it was) would be implemented.

Bullet points will suffice.

😜😂pmsl

Because people in glass houses really shouldn't throw stones. It makes you look daft.

Better to focus on Britain's own manifold constitutional and democratic problems, you'd think.

BlinkyBulldozer · 16/10/2023 12:20

Pleas provide evidence of that word being used in sports shows and on the news.

You should never ask people who experience racism to give you evidence of racism, unless you’re a court, police, etc. They should’ve have to be traumatised to appease you.
If you are even slightly, the onus is on you to educate yourself.

It cetainly doesnt make me look daft. I'm referring to the bizarre haters of their own country (UK). They just like to shit stir. I'm a UK citizen too, but difference is I defend my own country, as well as I've defended Australia, on this thread.

The exception to that is when you're dealing with race baiters. The person, whose quote you have responded to, was talking to one such race baiter..

SaySomethingMan · 16/10/2023 16:22

obviously those people you’ve mentioned in your examples are mixed race and are going to have completely different experiences to whichever of their parents were fully aboriginal. Why deny the truth in the post you’re responding to?

The positions they hold, they’re very very unlikely to have reached , if they were not mixed race and their outward appearances were immediately reflective of their aboriginal roots.

Criticising your own countries manifest faults, is not "hating" it.

Interpretation- ignore anything the elites don't like. How unifying that would be. I give up with people like you, so arrogant and ignorant.

Yes because voting no to a minority whose country you took over and whose rights you ignore is the epitome of humble and educated

Teddleshon · 16/10/2023 20:01

Off topic but I found the footage of David Lammy (shadow foreign Secretary) and James Cleverly (Foreign Secretary) and both black, bumping into each other in the Sky Newsroom today and embracing very moving.
