Small cabin bag for 10 nights?

How doable is it? Son’s due to go away with friends and just realised this is all the luggage they have! Weather’s looking dubious so couple of hoodies needed as well as all the usual stuff. Should we be looking at paying extra for hold luggage or am I being daft and it’s easy? We don’t go abroad often but when we have whence always had hold luggage so unsure what’s feasible.

Thank you!

I’ve done 5 days in a cold climate with a personal item only . So it should be easier in a hot climate.

So yes it’s feasible but you have to think it through very carefully, you can’t just throw everything in at the last minute.

I roll clothes very tightly and use a compression packing cube. There’s usually no weight limit on personal items, unlike cabin bags .

can your son share things like shampoo and shaving gel with a friend ?

I didn’t realise competitive cabin bagging was a thing!

I just travel nude with my passport, some sunscreen that I can tuck under my armpit and a smile.

I’d stretch to hold luggage (agree sharing with a friend sounds good). Under seat bags are tiny.

Just a word of caution that I was on a Ryanair flight 2 weeks ago and saw 3 passengers charged extra for baggage because their cabin bag was bigger than the permitted size - £70 extra to put the bag into the hold. (Don't try and overstuff the cabin bag.)

You didn’t realise that not everyone has as much money as you ? Gosh you must have a sheltered life !

Lots of people are on a budget and can’t afford that extra £30 -50 each way it can cost to check a bag. Or a couple might choose to spend that £200 on another two nights accommodation.

When my son was 17 he went away for 6 weeks with just a rucksack. For a weekend he'd just tuck a toothbrush and extra pair of boxers in his pocket! He is very gross, but young men tend not to worry about these things as much as their mums do!

I think the issue is going to be whether there are washing facilities and/or your son is going to wash out his underwear and tee shirts every couple of days. My son has just come back from a short break to Dublin and I was surprised how much stuff he said he had got in the rucksack (2 sets of jeans, spare hoody, denim jacket) but I think he would struggle for 10 days .

I think people get caught out with Ryanair - their free under-seat bag allowed is much smaller than the free under-seat bag that easyJet allows.

My son (5'10 so not tiny) got a decathlon 30l rucksack for £10 which is the right dimensions and had underwear for each day and 4 changes of clothes plus pair of flipflops and a book in the bag for a 9 day trip. Bag fitted easily under the seat in front. He even managed to bring some souvenirs back.

That's a good shout. Underwear and socks don't take up much space so take plenty, but wash your T shirts.

Ryanair under seat bag is only 20l which is really limiting, but as PPs say most (including OP's) are much bigger.

Inanun2 · 16/10/2023 13:12

Definitely do able for a young person who can travel light, everything tends to be a bit smaller and lighter andcan roll up and take less space, plus they are happy to wear things more than once. Men tend to take less too so husband could manage.
I have got better over the years and can now do a cabin bag for a max 5 night stay but wouldn’t be able to do longer visits without hold luggage.

Blahahahah · 16/10/2023 13:15

@MardiLisa yes my bad it's 20l, the arpanaz 100 rucksack

Happened to my DD flying to Poznan at the weekend. The case was cabin sized and should have been ok. She was fuming because she could have packed more generously. Coming home via Krakow and they allowed it.

OP it's doable, but it would be better to share a checked case, which is what my youngest does.

Doable, the number of days becomes irrelevant after 4 nights or so. Going for ten days means that you’re going to be rewearing and laundering clothes.

couple of vests or tees and board shorts for the day, light shirt couple of spare pairs of undies. Maybe some miniature toiletries or buy locally. Travel in something suitable for cooler days or nights.
And buy johnnies when he gets there

Summerbay23 · 16/10/2023 15:23

I’d add on one of the overhead locker bags. We have this for carry on only and it’s pretty big (check the airline maximum dimensions though). We used it on EasyJet

You’d wear three pairs of pants in 2 weeks? Are you washing these pants otherwise that’s grim.

OMG of course she is! Does that even need explaining!!

In answer to Op. I easily do 2 weeks with just a tiny cabin bag. If it's a hot country.

Your son should easily do it. Wear hoodies and a pair of jeans (if he's taking any) on the flight. Check if towels are included in holiday. If not there are special travel towels that fold up tiny.

Pre-order is toiletries from Boots at the airport and pick up in the departure lounge. He can take the extra Boots bag on the plane.

I bought a vacuum bag thing off Amazon, but honesty after the first time I used it, I didn't need to again, as I've got so expert at just taking necessities.

I'm off to the USA for 10 days next year and only taking small cabin bag. It's easily done.

Came to say this advice too. Also laundry leaves are your friend here, no need for a washing machine - hand wash in the sink or bath (the laundry leaves can be torn smaller for easy dosing), and a pegless travel washing line too.

Wear the thickest/heaviest/largest clothes on the flight.

Totally doable for a man (or woman!)

Small cabin bag for 10 nights?
CasperGutman · 16/10/2023 15:38

We've done a fortnight as a family with only cabin luggage, but this was on a "proper" airline, with a cabin-sized suitcase plus a rucksack as a "personal item" each, and we had laundry facilities at our accommodation.

Whether this trip is doable depends on the details. Will it be possible to wash a few T-shirts halfway through the trip? What will the weather be like? And what activities are planned? If he'll be getting wet and muddy then more clothes are needed. Otherwise, the same one or two jumpers or pairs of shorts/trousers could be worn for the entire trip.
