Small cabin bag for 10 nights?

Parttimewoes · 15/10/2023 13:21

How doable is it? Son’s due to go away with friends and just realised this is all the luggage they have! Weather’s looking dubious so couple of hoodies needed as well as all the usual stuff. Should we be looking at paying extra for hold luggage or am I being daft and it’s easy? We don’t go abroad often but when we have whence always had hold luggage so unsure what’s feasible.

Thank you!

The biggest factor in this is if he has access to a washing machine or not.

Just buy a tube of clothes hand wash at the airport.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/10/2023 14:37

I'd rather pay for luggage than have to be shopping for essentials that I already have or doing laundry on holiday.

If there's a few of them a hold case shared between 2 or 3 is probably the most cost effective way to do it which has the added bonus of not being restricted with liquids.

You wear jeans and a shirt or two plus hoodie on your person. Coat over the top and a hat/scarf if needed, phone, cable and charger in coat pockets plus small objects. Carry one pair of decent trousers, one pair of quick dry trousers if doing outdoor stuff, four or five pairs of socks and pants, couple of shirts. Toothbrush, toothpaste, bar of soap and a book. Done.

Four shirts for ten days? Not unless there's somewhere to wash clothes!!

Legendairy · 15/10/2023 14:51

Can you pay for the bigger hand luggage also so then he can take small suitcase and rucksack.

I went to Greece in the summer and struggled with a 15kg suitcase, plus 10kg hand luggage plus under seat rucksack, didn't even need to take jumpers etc and was basically by the pool all day 😂

Crikeyalmighty · 15/10/2023 14:56

@Parttimewoes the under the seat thing is literally a handbag !! Or a very small rucksack -

meganorks · 15/10/2023 15:10

Hand luggage maybe but not the free rucksack. You won't be able to fit enough clothes for 10 days in and I can't see a young lad being keen to do his washing on holiday! I'd say he'd need more than 10 tops as generally he would want something in the day and something clean in the evening.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 15/10/2023 15:13

If you pay for priority boarding( £10) you can take a carry on bag in addition
Take a tube of travel wash and he can wash through lightweight items
Don't forget a universal travel plug

It’s the small 45x36x20 bag that has to go under the seat. Going to a supposedly warmish destination, planning to go out to eat and to bars etc in evenings

Not doable unless he plans to wear oneself of clothes and wash the otera week. Why not pack a trial bag and see?

Blingstar · 15/10/2023 15:14

Yes it's doable. I'd recommend Cabin Zero bags. Pay close attention to dimensions www.cabinzero.com/products/classic-36l-navy

Depends on the airline; sometimes the underseat option is bigger than you'd expect. Also, no one has ever measured mine, so you can get away with a few extra cm in practice. (If challenged, you'd remove an item of clothing from the rucksack and wear it instead, to bring the size down.)

gotomomo · 15/10/2023 15:29

It's fine, I go for 2-3 weeks 2 up on the motorcycle with camp gear. Ryan air hand luggage size is a breeze

My rucksack fits under the seat (even on Easyjet/Ryanair).

We have done several transatlantic holidays for 10/15 days.

Only time I have checked in a case was for my DDs wedding.

InacycleofNC · 15/10/2023 15:35

I always think, I've paid a lot money for this trip. And I'm using my precious days off for it. Do I want to spend it hand washing in a hotel sink every day and doing mental gymnastics about what I can wear when?

In my case, no. More than 4-5 nights and I put a suitcase in the hold.

At the very least, pay for an overhead locker bag.

DyslexicPoster · 15/10/2023 15:46

Me and son did Aer lingus with a 10kg checked in case and tiny hand luggage for 7 days. The carry on was so small you'd struggle over 4 days. However I did easily take on a huge tote going out and coming back as it appeared to be stuff I'd bought at departures. I made sure everything in my tote I could put on at the desk if needs be.

I took stuff that was fit for the bin and Binned it on holiday once worn. There's no way I could do ten days on Ryan Air hand luggage. But my 19year old can and does. He stays with mates and they wash for him. It's one change of clothes and some undies. A 5kg carry on I could. I'd have to bin stuff as it never fits back in however mu h room or weight you scrimp going out. A worn out pair of jeans is handy to keep in reserve for these occasions

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 15/10/2023 15:46

Take a neck pillow, take the pillow bit out of the cover, stuff cover with small clothes, t shirts, boxers, socks etc. Put bigger things in the bag. Wear combat trousers, stuff pockets. Might just make it doable. I’d see if there was the option to upgrade to a normal cabin sized bag personally.or Get hold of duty free carrier bag in advance. You can take that on in addition to your free bag.

I’m with you on this.

I think it’s also worth mentioning that if you’re sharing a room with someone other than a spouse/partner do they really want to subjected to your laundry?

rookiemere · 15/10/2023 16:10

Our airport is in chaos and there is a real issue for baggage collection, so people have now started going hand luggage only to avoid having to wait hours at the airport when they get back.

Having said that if making sure you have enough clothes involves bringing clothes you don't even really want to wear, or stuffing them in a neck pillow - then I'd probably pay the extra for at least a cabin bag.

OnLockdown · 15/10/2023 16:30

I think it will be difficult and uncomfortable. I did a 3 night summer city break, which was fine and a 5 night trip to England with changeable weather, which was a struggle!

VeryGoodVeryNice · 15/10/2023 16:39

I’d say it’s doable. If he wears his most bulky stuff going through the airport, and uses a bag like this. I’ve flown with this bag on easyjet and Ryanair with no problems, and you can fit bloody loads in it! We all went away for a week in the summer with one of these bags each and we had room to spare.

MardiLisa · 15/10/2023 16:42

Fine if you are prepared to wash a lot, pretty much impossible without.

The Ryanair dimensions are equivalent to a small PE bag. All our "normal" daysacks were ok in height and depth but too wide - you need something squarer in cross-section. Unless you want to gamble on them not checking - and they often don't. Paying for the bigger cabin bag (can be cheaper when bundled "free" with priority access, as PP mentioned) could well cost less than buying a suitable small bag to maximise every cubic centimetre.

rookiemere · 15/10/2023 16:44

Can he pay for a cabin bag OP ?

Mumaway · 15/10/2023 16:51

Are you able to launder anything there? That's always a good option

oohsharon · 15/10/2023 17:05

"Ryanair are very strickt - so no carrying a bag with toiletries bought at the airport, it needs to fit in that one bag."

Rubbish. We take a bag on everytime as does everyone else. Some airline websites actually state that you're allowed. Where's he flying from OP?

I'd be so pissed off if we'd agreed on hand luggage then one of the group decided to check in a hold case. They'll all have to hang around waiting for him 4 times! He just needs to pack well. We always just take a backpack, it's fine.

oohsharon · 15/10/2023 17:07

Shove extra hoodie in the bottom of the extra bag from WHSmiths 🤷🏽‍♀️

Ds managed a rucksack for 5 nights in Ibiza. But then it was just one pair of jeans, rest t-shirts and shorts. Bought toiletries out there.
