To put heating on?

lockdownbabyx · 15/10/2023 09:48

So for context, I live in a 3 story townhouse and our living room (where we spend most of our time) is on the second floor and directly above the garage. Therefore it's always the coldest room, with hard flooring aswell so feels even colder.
Now I can deal with the cold just by wrapping up etc but I have a 2 year old and an 9 month old who spend most of there time playing on the living room floor. I worry that it's not warm enough for them.
We have a large rug and also a large playmat on the floor for them. But their hands and faces still feel cold.
It's currently 16c and I'm dying to put the heating on 🥶

I don't mind being a bit chilly but if my 2 year old feels cold I'll switch the heating on, so I'd say do it! xx

LegoLady95 · 15/10/2023 09:51

How would it be unreasonable to put the heating on if you are cold? Mine is on this morning for am hour for the first time this year.

Desecratedcoconut · 15/10/2023 09:51

Are you really asking if you are unreasonable to put the heating on when your home is cold?Yes, put the heating on.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/10/2023 09:51

Crikey these are terrible times we live in when people can’t put the heating on 😢

Mindymomo · 15/10/2023 09:52

We’ve put the heating on these past 2 days, just for an hour in the evening and morning to warm the house.

HeatherMoores · 15/10/2023 09:52

16 degrees inside or outside? That’s too cold room temperature for children. I’ve just put mine on but I feel like I’m literally burning money it’s so annoying. The greedy fuel companies make so angry.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/10/2023 09:52

Mines been coming on in the morning for a while as Dd has an early start for school. And I put it on when my son had a play date on Friday as I don’t like guests to be cold

Starseeking · 15/10/2023 09:53

If the DC are cold, turn the heating on.

User0000009 · 15/10/2023 09:54

Just having a quick blast of heating. Our house warms up quickly so an hour here and there is fine.

Vriddle · 15/10/2023 09:54

What's making you hesitate? Finances? 16C inside is chilly, especially for your little ones.

MardiLisa · 15/10/2023 09:56

Why would you need to find excuses? Just do it.

There's no medal for competitive shivering.

Testina · 15/10/2023 09:57

Why are you asking?

AlexaCanYouHearMe · 15/10/2023 09:58

FGS these threads pop up with ridiculous regularity. 🙄 If you're cold put the heating on!!! That's what it's for. It's mid October. I don't imagine you have had the heating on much for the past six months! Put it on!!!

Fifthtimelucky · 15/10/2023 09:59

Our heating went on this morning for the first time. It's off now, and only took an hour or so to get the house up to a reasonable temperature.

I tend to like things cooler than most people, but 16C would be too cold for me and would be for children I think.

Put your heating on!

ginandtonicwithlimes · 15/10/2023 10:02

If you have a three storey townhouse you can afford to put the heating on. 🙄 Our house inside was 15c yesterday. We have had to put it on. I have two young children and I have Raynaud's so it wasn't feeling very pleasant.

In terms of the youngest put a long sleeve vest on, a long sleeve top and cardigan if you feel that worried. Same for the two year old.

I caved and had the heating on for an hour and a half last night. I can't stand being cold, but equally heating on before November seem wrong to me (joke before the pile-on stays).

ginandtonicwithlimes · 15/10/2023 10:04

Also put a rug on the floor. So much warmer than a hard floor.

Gallowayan · 15/10/2023 10:06

I googled this recently and a healthy room temperature is 18-21

Of course it is reasonable to put the heating on if you are cold.

If money is an issue I'd say its reasonable to train yourself to tolerate a room temperature of 18. But 16 is too cold.

Pretty sure OP isn't poor.

That's a bit silly, it's not only 'poor' people who are feeling the pinch at the moment.

Testina · 15/10/2023 10:08

@lockdownbabyx no need to be rude to that poster, you’re the one that didn’t explain your OP.
You might have been asking AIBU because “finances” (in which case, no-one can answer that) or:

  • Environmental concerns
  • fear of an abusive partner being angry
  • feeling you had to abide by a childhood rule of “only below 12°” or “only after Bonfire Night”
  • confusion whether we’ve lost sight of what’s an acceptable level of cold and actually are the kids fine
  • etc

This time of year, MN fills up with vague posts about heating and @MardiLisa is right that there is a tiresome amount of competitive shivering about them!

Are you one of those types of poster that doesn't think you are unreasonable?

As someone that has only just got central heating recently I would rather go without most other things to be warm! Don't let the kids go cold. Also they are more likely to get ill. If you were obviously on the bones of your arse poor I might not say it but sounds like you aren't.

I am aware but I doubt it is the choosing between food and heat kind of poverty.
