To think that a RECEPTION teacher shouldn't have said this ???

My daughter goes to a catholic school (it was the only school available to us) we are not a religious family, but it does not bother me that she is being immersed in religion. After all, she will only make her own mind up later in life anyway. But this is relevant.
They use god in almost every part of the day, and in all aspects of learning.
As those who are not religious will know, we and a lot of others view god as "made up" or a myth, if you will.
Now this brings me to where I have a problem - her reception teacher has picked up on some of the class talking about unicorns. A typical 4/5 year old thing... and has proceeded to tell them that Unicorns, fairies and dragons etc are all made up, and do not exist.
This is absolute insanity to me!!? They are 4/5 and all have wonderful vivid imaginations.
We regularly take my daughter to "the fairy forest" and she immerses herself into it and tries to find clues to where the fairies could be hiding, and loves to think that at nighttime all of the magical creatures come out to play.
She's now come home saying that it's all untrue and they are made up.
I'm actually really upset about this.
How can you push the belief of god, and they go all out for Santa etc. but actively shut down the belief of magical creatures ??

This will not be the first person to tell them something they believe in doesn’t exist. So easily explained OP, just say oh really did they say that? Well some people believe, some people don’t. You can make your own mind up.

LolaSmiles · 14/10/2023 16:20

I didn’t realise people brought their children up to think dragons, fairies and unicorns were actually real. I’d rather my DD understands reality and knows what mythical creatures are.
Same here.
I enjoy seeing mine play make believe, but thankfully they know what's imaginary and what's real.

I don't understand why adults are so invested in pushing the idea that fantasy and imaginary stuff is literally true. I feel the same about the adults who get hysterical that their 6 year old might be realising that Santa isn't real, but instead of accepting this they tie themselves in knots trying to make the "magic" last or else Christmas is ruined forever.

Agree @SiousieSoo I also spent my entire education in a RC school with priests and nuns teaching us
1960s to 80s
and we were certainly never told we or any other religion was evil or that we were sinners or anything of the kind
What rubbish

My childhood parish priest, and thus the local Catholic primary school, used to refer to Jews as god's chosen people, and Jews, Muslims, and Christians collectively as people of the book. Other faiths didn't get that much mention that long ago, but when they did come up the mentions were respectful. Oh, and Catholics, Protestants, and Methodists came together at Christmas and Easter to celebrate in joint services.

@BurnToastAgain Hello again. Where did you get the idea that I am worried about her being abused. And why do you keep quoting "big multicultural city" ?? I was asked about my whereabouts and means of different schools and transports. Without being outing as to my location, which is probably quite apparent now. That's the best way I could describe it

garlictwist · 14/10/2023 16:22

But....fairies aren't real? Surely it's a nice idea rather than something taught as real.

AutumnalPumpkin · 14/10/2023 16:24

@MoiraRosesBaybay Flamingos????? They can't possibly be real 🤣

@BurnToastAgain I don't think PP is criticising Islamic beliefs. I think almost everyone on this thread is criticising all beliefs somewhat. Why do you want to know people's opinions on other faiths so badly??

The cane was dished out at all schools in those days.
The head of Our local Grammar ( not Catholic shock horror ) used to line kids up in the school hall and take a good long run in order to make it a good hit.

My ex regularly got the board duster thrown at his head in an everyday comprehensive. Can't say I blamed them.

Blimey that brings back memories 🤣🤣

AutumnalPumpkin · 14/10/2023 16:30

@MollyMarples yes and that's fine. I didn't bring her up to think they were real.. it just came to my knowledge that she thought they were, and as she's little I decided not to correct her. As I love her vivid imagination. And I can imagine how wonderful it would be to to through life believing unicorns are real and live in the forest 😆

@BurnToastAgain You seem to want to pick an argument. It didn't work with me so you are picking battles with others.
This is my thread and arguments are strictly prohibited. Else you will be fed to the unicorns. Thank you.

Hyperbole? Are you serious?? Do you usually dismiss other peoples’ real, lived experiences so offensively?

I’m not for one second stating that all Catholic schools are like mine so how dare you assume your experience is everyone else’s reality?

I can’t say anything more widely other than this is my story, it’s real and true and has had significant effects on my life. I won’t say anything more than I am utterly disgusted by your post. Do you usually just scoff at people telling you harmful experiences that have happened to them??

AutumnalPumpkin · 14/10/2023 11:24

@monicagellerbing okay I understand it's a very religious school and as I have said that is fine. But I don't understand why the teacher had to tell them completely unprovoked that unicorns and fairies are made up.

Because believing in mythical creatures is a sin. And religious people don’t allow a range of beliefs. They all one.

This was to @SiousieSoo

Calling me ridiculous when recounting a traumatic time in my childhood is really beyond contempt.

@MILLYmo0se this is what confuses me. They will openly talk about Santa clause but say that fairies and other mythical beings are all made up.
But I'm sure somewhere in the bible there is talk of a unicorn or being to the like.
I could be wrong

Santa clause is a story based on a saint.

autiebooklover · 14/10/2023 16:38

So nobody here did the tooth fairy past the age of 4???

I'd be annoyed op it's not appropriate to spoil the magic for children wether it's fairies the Easter bunny or Santa

Doveyouknow · 14/10/2023 16:41

For those saying the OP chose a Catholic school, sometimes there is no choice. The catholic school local to us is often where kids are placed when they don't get their preferences. The school has a terrible reputation so not many parents actively chose it and would be surprised if many agree with it's catholic ethos.

What rubbish

So because something didn’t happen to you it can’t possibly have happened to anyone else and it’s rubbish?

Are you not embarrassed to post this?

Would you respond to someone disclosing anything else - didn’t happen to me when I was in a vaguely similar environment so it’s nonsense? Do you honestly think like that? And do you have any idea how harmful, offensive and upsetting your ignorant attitude can be? Or do you just not care?

Tlolljs · 14/10/2023 16:43

Now I always thought that unicorns ‘ died out’ because they were playing in the rain and wouldn’t get on the Ark. I know that’s not true obviously, but I’m sure I’ve heard that story.

(most likely a dragonfly)

It was real to me im 37 and have no life .

Leaving this thread well alone now, it’s actually brought up some really upsetting memories and being told that what I experienced is ridiculous nonsense has winded me. Mumsnet can be a horrific place sometimes.

Oh do behave.
St George and the Dragon anyone? After they told us that story, we all managed NOT to burst into flames or collapse in a heap knowing we're now condemned to an eternity of being a sinner....well not an eternity cause you're forgiven all your sins on a regular basis.

It has NOTHING to do with religion. We will never know unless OP asks the teacher directly and reports back on why he did it.
