Would you go to London

limey234 · 14/10/2023 07:50

We have a tourist trip booked in half term. Lots of museums, the tube, shops, tourist destinations with our two kids (under 7).

Would you go? Given the situation in the world right now.

My husband barely watches or reads any news. He doesn't understand why I'm nervous.

I think we should postpone it. I'm a bit nervous of being caught up in a protest, or other activity.

@Chaiandkaafee no, tell me why my post was based on opinion?

glassyglass · 14/10/2023 11:55

I guess you can keep making yourself look like an idiot though 🤷🏻‍♀️

Tryingmybestadhd · 14/10/2023 11:56

No I wouldn’t as I wouldn’t want to be surrounded by Hamas supporters . Their ideology is a worry . See what happened in France yesterday

Chaiandkaafee · 14/10/2023 11:59

Now read this carefully:

you wrote that the likelihood of a terror attack being by a Muslim is a fact. Unless you are mystic Meg you cannot possibly state that that is a fact. Irrespective of all the stats and opinions you throw at me - no one can categorically state as a fact who the next (godforbid) terror attack will be instigated by!

so your statement was an opinion not a fact.
If that is too complicated for you then I suggest you carry on with your weekend and leave the difficult conversations for the grown ups.

Chaiandkaafee · 14/10/2023 12:00

That’s to @glassyglass - getting frustrated and calling me an idiot doesn’t help your opinion either.

WhoHidTheCoffee · 14/10/2023 12:00

We live near London and travel in several times a week for work. We’re taking our kids and I’m happy to report back. My personal view is that I would steer clear of any location where tensions are more likely to manifest (eg around the Israeli Embassy, the Jewish Museum - which was targeted last week) but that it’s impossible to predict a lone wolf attack. But two weeks is a long time in this kind of situation and things could be either calmer or more inflamed by then.

CarpetLady · 14/10/2023 12:01

Archymum · 14/10/2023 11:50

To the PP who used this phrase, what does "visibly Jewish" mean?! What would you expect a "visibly Jewish" person to look like?

Presumably she is thinking of Haredi Jews.

limey234 · 14/10/2023 12:05

Sorry but I have to defend @glassyglass here: she is basing her comments on facts and stats.

"A future terror attack is most likely to be carried out by an Islamic extremist"

"Most likely" being the important words there.

Just like I'm "most likely" to have to work til I'm 65 and I'm "mostly unlikely" to win the lotto. It's a statement based on statistics and facts from the past.

Most normal people use that type of reasoning to form statements such as the above ones and the examples I gave.

OP posts:
limey234 · 14/10/2023 12:07

And on top of that most people have the capability to assess sources for accuracy and reliability. Stats released by MI5 are probably more reliable than some opinion piece from The Sun newspaper.

I said the biggest threat is currently from Islamic extremism then the far right. I never mentioned Muslims?

Now read this carefully:

The irony.

😆 this is the best you can come up with

glassyglass · 14/10/2023 12:09

of course not but it makes me feel better though!

Londonlondon4 · 14/10/2023 12:10

No shame in avoiding it, it is not giving in to terror just a sensible decision based on your circumstances. The chances of getting caught in an attack are minimal, but if there is an attack or a clashes when you are there it will be chaos and confusion. `I would not want to be with children, particularly children with ASD who may find any changes harder to cope with.

limey234 · 14/10/2023 12:11

@Chaiandkaafee you are looking for a "gotcha" moment and you won't uncover that I'm a horrible racist I'm afraid.

@limey234 thank you & that’s exactly it. Best to ignore.

Chaiandkaafee · 14/10/2023 12:13

Back peddling and resorting to insults. OP agreeing with you suggests that her fear was totally related to race. I’ll take my leave! Point proved.

Yes, absolutely unless you are visibly
jewish

What does visibly jewish mean? Any racist comments or attack are give. Harsher sentencing guidelines. I would be horrified if there was any attacks based on a persons race/ethnicity.

glassyglass · 14/10/2023 12:17

Back peddling and resorting to insults

More deflecting, post evidence of the backpedaling?

You won’t though.

I’ll take my leave!

Yep, rather than graciously admit you’re wrong, you’re running away.

Point proved

Yep, you made it very easy to prove our points, thank you.

You think that everywhere in London is 'surrounded by Hamas supporters'?

Unless London was picked up and moved to Gaza while I was in bed, how likely do you think that is? I've just been in my local Tesco Express and I didn't feel particularly surrounded by anything. Maybe when I'm at the BFI later?

@Chaiandkaafee

Again for the ones in the back.

Rishi Sinai has sent a tonne of military equipment and personnel to Israel to help them blow up Gaza.

This makes the U.K. a target.

Khaled Meshaal, a former leader of Hamas had called on 'all scholars who teach jihad' to join a call to arms.

London is a major terrorist target and centre for protest due to the location of the government and it being the most populous city.

Any anxiety in visiting London is entirely related to the above live situation.

StayorgoLDN · 14/10/2023 12:38

Sinai = Sunak obviously damn phone!

It means that this is a very hard time to be out and about as an Orthodox Jew 😔

Muslimahs be careful in London today

I work with someone who has never been out of the UK in her life. Every time she considers it, she researches and finds something to scare her into cancelling. It must be terrible to be so fearful, even here in your own country. I guess it's the raison d'etre of of terrorise organisations, to disrupt and spread fear.

Tryingmybestadhd · 14/10/2023 13:01

While not Muslims supporting Palestine on the streets are terrorists the reality is Hamas jihadists will be amongst them . I would stay well away from big city centres look at Paris

SocksAndTheCity · 14/10/2023 13:11

Something like 15% of the population of England live in London. We're here already.

What do the people suggesting that nobody go near the place suggest we all do - cower under the bed and don't go out for the duration? Seriously, what is it you think we should be doing; or is the London-phobia such that you don't actually give a toss provided it doesn't affect you?
