To ask how to remove window condensation

Morning
I have condensation inside my windows on cold mornings. Currently I'm opening windows to get rid but a friend mentioned a vacuum thing you can get. They are fairly expensive so what do you guys do? I was thinking of a chamois block?

Jeesh- just grab a towel and wipe them down

LuisVitton · 14/10/2023 07:29

I have a window wiper type thing for windows, I wipe them down then mop up the moisture with a towel which can hang outside or go in dryer.

MyCircumference · 14/10/2023 07:29

you can put cat litter in a pair of tights, soaks up moisture,
get a portable dehumidifer
silican gel pellets

i just read this this morning

LaraMargot · 14/10/2023 07:30

Karcher vacuum sometimes available in Aldi. Brilliant.

ChannelyourinnerElsa · 14/10/2023 07:33

Titan window vac from screw fix. Excellent!

though the biggest help is opening the windows in the morning

PerspiringElizabeth · 14/10/2023 07:35

Apparently wiping the windows with a solution of washing up liquid stops condensation gathering, but comments were saying it just moves the condensation to the wall which is what you don’t want.

We got a window vac from screw fix last year - need to dig it out actually! - FAR cheaper than fixing mould/new windows!

Cloth/towel is fine but no point if you’re going to put it on a radiator inside. Tumble or outside.

@MyCircumference - Is there not a risk of the cat doing a poo in your tights? 😅

I was not expecting this level of British sarcasm so early in the morning. You win today! 🤣

🤓👏
People swear by Karcher vacs. I'm trying a saucer of salt this winter.

ChimChimeny · 14/10/2023 07:42

Use a decent dehumidifier overnight to stop it appearing in the first place

Farcis · 14/10/2023 07:43

I have one room where this happens - gets wiped every morning with a window wiper like the window cleaners used to use. I open the window first so most of it runs out and then I wipe up the rest. We also have a portable dehumidifier which helps a bit but is sufficiently noisy that I can’t run it at night which is when it’s really needed.

YoghurtCoatedMeerkats · 14/10/2023 07:44

I recently purchased a window vac to deal with condensation. Wish I'd bought one years ago! I've been going mad using it on mirrors and glass too..

CasperGutman · 14/10/2023 07:44

A cloth or a towel is all well and good, but you keep needing to wring it out, so need to carry a bucket around as well, or keep walking to a sink to squeeze it out (or doing this out of the window!). And when you're done you have a wet cloth or towel to deal with. If you leave it to dry indoors then guess where the water from it will go? Right back into the air inside your house, adding to the humidity and eventually increasing the condensation on your windows!

The Karcher window vac things (and other similar devices) are useful as they make the job quicker and tidier. More expensive than a cloth though, of course.

Isabelle70 · 14/10/2023 07:45

I wipe down each morning with a cloth and open the window for the day.

I have a gel dehumidifier in my windowsills from this time of year. Work like a dream! Keep one in the car that doesn't get used very often too.

Everythinghasgonetoshit · 14/10/2023 07:47

Used to have a karcher which was good. Then got a macallister one. Utter shit, lasted two weeks, don't get that one and keep receipts as they do break easily.

Viragok · 14/10/2023 07:48

God these threads on MN are terrible for my bank balance - I'm now convinced I need a window vac! To answer your qu, OP, we currently use an old towel. And then put it on a radiator....;)

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 14/10/2023 07:50

Yeah I've read that a small bowl of salt on the window ledge will do the trick , never tried it though as don't get condensation .

noname846 · 14/10/2023 07:52

Karcher window vac for me, and a microfibre cloth for the edges where the Karcher can't quite reach.

We're getting a lot of condensation at the moment, especially on our big French doors in the living room (even though they're double glazed!).

crochetmonkey74 · 14/10/2023 07:53

Sounds like the window vac is the way forward. Will try the little dehumidifiers too and the cat litter trick

OP posts:
Username82y · 14/10/2023 07:53

Inside the double glazing? You need to replace the glass panels the gas has blown.

CherryCokeFanatic · 14/10/2023 07:54

why on earth are people obsessed with a purpose built window vacuum when a cloth or some kitchen roll will do the job? Crazy

Daffodilwoman · 14/10/2023 07:54

I bought a cheap Kartcer look alike from Aldi.
