To be really upset and disappointed that...

New Labour, in 1997, did not deliver on its election promises?
There seem to be a lot of people on this site, who were "seduced" into thinking they had a great future.
I do not believe this to be true.
Gold reserves sold off, Gordon Brown saying he wasn't going to do anything with the economy, because it was in good shape.
Does nobody think the country was put in an even worse situation then? Or is critical thinking a 2020s "woke" attribute?

Why are you particularly upset about something from 16 years ago tonight? I would be more upset by the mess we are currently in

sprigatito · 13/10/2023 22:15

Christ they're not even trying any more Hmm

gelatogina · 13/10/2023 22:16

Bloody hell you hold a grudge don’t you

26 years ago! I feel so old...

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 13/10/2023 22:18

How odd!

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 13/10/2023 22:18

Holy fuck you are right, how didn't I see that, definitely will be voting for the Cons now.

Hellinthekitchen · 13/10/2023 22:18

Let's be honest here, has any politician ever in the history of time followed through on their promises?

Moonbowlspoon · 13/10/2023 22:18

I’m still upset and disappointed about Suez. What was Anthony Eden thinking?

And what about Lord North pissing away the colonies to the “United States”. I’m still fumin’.

Dotcheck · 13/10/2023 22:19

Bloody Gordon Brown
Certainly won’t be voting Labour in the next election. I may even vote Conservative next time.

Ah memory lane…

⌛️

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 13/10/2023 22:19

By the way @sprigatito I have no idea what the thanks means, I pressed it as I agree.

Tinkerbyebye · 13/10/2023 22:20

People on here believe Labour is the be all and end all and forget the shit they left the country in, the phony war we were taken into, that Wales has a Labour government that’s rubbish

but then they are not a good opposition party either

tbh all parties are shit

theunbelievabletruth · 13/10/2023 22:25

Is this what desperate central office is reduced to - starting spurious threads on MN.

I'll tell you one thing for free. I have never felt so utterly ashamed of a government or any party as I do of this one. The quality of ministers is way lower than the scraping of the barrel.

I hated Thatcher. But I never regarded her as corrupt. I hated her policies but she at least had integrity. This govt set the tone with Johnson and are nothing but a bunch of feather nesting grifters with the morals of a dodgy third world regime.

So know. Compared with now Brown was a bloody statesman.

theunbelievabletruth · 13/10/2023 22:27

Know - no

Gwendimarco · 13/10/2023 22:39

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Such a loser! Prepare for a Labour government my friend 🌹

TheLoupGarou · 13/10/2023 22:42

That was TWENTY SIX years ago. Holy fuck. I was only just 18 - the first time I voted.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 13/10/2023 22:45

But to be fair to the last labour administration, events, as they so often do, got in the way of what was a fairly progressive agenda.

WandaWonder · 13/10/2023 22:47

Yeah we believe you

Moonbowlspoon · 13/10/2023 22:47

Compared to the recent succession of clowns and incompetents, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown look like absolute political titans. It’s nice to remember the halcyon days when you had the comfort of knowing the grown ups were in charge.

UmbrellaSoldiers · 13/10/2023 22:50

I met Gordon Brown recently. What a fucking legend. I want him back as Prime Minister

Skodacool · 13/10/2023 23:10

NHS was in a much better state than it is now.

MojoMoon · 13/10/2023 23:20

I'm still raging about Ramsey McDonald and the failures of the first ever Labour government.

Fionaville · 13/10/2023 23:22

I will say, that things got a lot better in my town when Labour got in. For one thing Sure start centres! The difference they made in this area was unreal. I took all my children to baby and toddler groups there. It was them who first picked up on DS autism and put us on the pathway for diagnosis. And under that government he got diagnosed quickly and a statement put in place so he could attend a special school. As opposed to now when mainstream schools are full of undiagnosed/unsupported SEN kids, as the diagnosis system has crumbled and there arent enough special schools, which effects ALL children's education.
That government invested in children and young people. Alternative educational placements for high schoolers who weren't doing well academically, but could go and learn a trade, were doing outstanding things for young people. So much good stuff happened under that government.
All of that got stopped when the tories came in.

Scautish · 13/10/2023 23:27

the absolute DESPERATION of these deluded Tory-til-I-die posters is fucking hilarious! 😆😆

its like they think we’re all as gullible as them.

Brocollimatilda · 13/10/2023 23:27

Bloody hell, I watched that election before I had any children. All three are now adults.

I’m pleased my severely disabled son had a lot of his childhood under a Labour government and Every Disabled Child Matters. It was light years away from the situation now.

Boomboom22 · 13/10/2023 23:43

So many missed the point entirely. The neoliberal trickle down economics doesn't work. The gold reserves were sold. There is no magic money tree and so the services paid for by pfi under labour are only just about being paid now and in the meantime and future services are cut.
Labour now essentially agree with the tories on spending anyway and no surprise as the accepted norm is for the majority to net take.
