More likeky thay've been told not to touch the customers.

W hich would be weird (tho' totally in tune with the current excessively PC climate) because research has shown that customers rate such service-providing types higher if they do make physical contact of that sort.

Wisteria · 07/03/2008 16:58

I know exactly what you mean - it drives me mad, especially when they can see you've got your other hand full

admylin · 07/03/2008 17:00

This happens all the time here in Germany but if they do that then I stand and make a point of picking the coins up one by one so the impatient cashier has to sit and watch.

chocolatespiders · 07/03/2008 17:00

i dont like that either... or when i am waiting for them to say thankyou....

castille · 07/03/2008 17:02

The money itself is probably covered in more germs than the customers.

McDreamy · 07/03/2008 17:02

Oooh drives me mad. They do it all the time in Cyprus. In fact they rarely make eye contact with you at all and in supermarkets generally carry on talking to their mate on the checkout next to them!!!!!!

ITA I find it very very rude. This happens to me on occasions and I too make a point of taking as much time as I can at the counter

McDreamy · 07/03/2008 17:10

She clearly enjoys her job then

VictorianSqualor · 07/03/2008 17:10

Not at all, when I used to work in a Bakery I got really fed up of people ignoring my hand and outting it on the counter too.
I'd make a point of putting their change on the counter afterwards.
It also annoys me when people put the receipt in your hand then the change so you have to faff about getting it back in your purse. It should be change, then notes, then receipt.

BeMyLilBaby · 07/03/2008 17:11

oh one of my bug-bears too!! its just so well rude isnt it? especially if you are nice to the person serving you, bus drivers do it all the time and change is awkward to grab too!

cosima · 07/03/2008 17:12

in france it is rude to hand money to the person and they always put it in a dish. i wouldnt be surprised if they are told in training not to touch everyones hands, especially if its a food shop

VictorianSqualor · 07/03/2008 17:15

I'd doubt very much they were told not to touch hands tbh.
In our training we were told to wash hands after being at the till because money is dirty but not people!

Ah yes, but we get to do it after, cos they have to hand the money first
There was a certain point on our glass counter that I knew it was particularly hard to pick money up from

BITCAT · 07/03/2008 17:32

I work in a shop, and i always give customers change in there hand, it's rude not to and we are supposed to give the customers our full and undivided attention when serving them..i also smile, say please, thank you and am always polite in all situations..even when the customer is being difficult!! I will try and have conversations with them and usually get good feed back from my customers!!

bigbumhole · 07/03/2008 18:03

It annoys me too. I also hate it when you get a note as part of your change and they put the receipt under the note, then the coins on top and you have fumble about to slide the receipt out before putting the change away in your wallet. I hate it

(Did that make any sense BTW lol?!)

weebleswobble · 07/03/2008 18:09

It really annoys me too. On a bad pmt day I have been known to say "I put the money in your hand, now you put it in mine". If I don't get a please or thank you I politely remind them of that too.

I deal with the public at work and would be sacked if I treated them the same way.

BITCAT · 07/03/2008 18:11

yes, i always try to seperate notes from coins if possible and am especially careful when giving change to young children as there hands so much smaller and struggle to hold it all and i try to put receipts in the bag if thats what the customer wants, some would rather have it in hand but i usually check!

blueshoes · 07/03/2008 18:47

In some cultures, putting cash on the table is disrespectful because it implies the recipient is a beggar.

Shaniece · 07/03/2008 19:15

I hate it too! One of my pet hates.

sazb · 07/03/2008 19:42

sazb · 07/03/2008 19:43
