No, yanbu... They do this in our canteen at work all the time. Although maybe that is some sort of food hygiene thing? But it still makes me feel like a twat cos I can never pick the flibbing coins up as I have long nails

During my oh-so-many decades in retail I always put the money into the customers hand: coins first, then notes. Receipt always in the bag unless it's a credit card receipt, when I'd give it you back with your card. all this with a smile and a thank you (genuine, not corporate). I banged endlessly on at my staff to do the same thing too.

Unless they'd done something to piss me off. In which case coins on the counter, fake smile, oh, and give them the specially torn bag that's going to give way about ten minutes after they leave the shop. We used to prepare them on purpose.

None of us are as lovely as we think we are when we shop. We wear our hearts on our sleeves and vent our frustrations on the poor old shop staff who - most of the time - actually want to help. Most folk in retail know that the day passes quicker if you are nice to people.

Look to yourselves....

I've got an even more annoying one. Has anyone actually worked in a shop?

a) how annoying is it when customers do that exact thing- ignore your hand and throw the money on the counter.

B) Isn't it even MORE annoying when customers ignore your hand and SNAP their credit card down on the counter like you should be in awe of the plastic.

In my younger days when I was a cashier this drove me mental. mental mental mental.

But yes, it's rude either way. Cashier or customer.

It's so annoying and so rude. Hate it aswell when they ring up the stuff and then they don't tell you how much it is, they just stand there. Now I say 'how much is it'. I used to work in retail and I never did that.
Really annoying when they give you change with reciept and notes under the coins. Looks neat and tidy but very awkward.

BITCAT · 08/03/2008 17:37

I agree 2girls and it also rubs me up wrong way and incredibly rude when customers have phone stuckto ear when your tryin to serve them..how rude? I've been in a few shops where the customer service has terrible and i think i would never be like that to a customer..i'm normally quite a pleasent, happy, polite, and helpful person but i turn into a monster on other side of the counter..as a customer i can be a nightmare especially if i think i have been treated badly and am in the right!

StealthPolarBear · 08/03/2008 18:04

Aargh yes all of this! There is one particular woman in our local shop who does all of the below, plus is the most miserable person I've ever met, avoids meeting your eye, avoids talking, sometimes doesn't tell you how much you owe, just waits for the money, and has an incredibly fake sounding "thannnnnnkyyyyyyyyyyyewwwww" as you leave (still no eye contact). Although having read mumbles post I now want to know what I have done to offend her
Another thing I often do (out of stupidity) which shop workers must get all the time and hate is still handing over my card, instead of putting it in the machines they use now. I don't smack it down self importantly on the counter though - how irritating!

SlackSally · 08/03/2008 18:08

It is very rude, but having worked in retail for a fairly long time, and in several different companies, on balance, customers are far far ruder than staff.

I hate the word 'serve' as well. What am I, your scullery maid?

For what it's worth, I always tell them the amount, have a hand ready for the card should they give it to me, ask if they would rather have the receipt in the bag or in their hand. I rarely give change, but if I do, it would def be notes first. I'll also stop and hold the bag up by the handle while the customer puts away their purse. Even if they're chatting to friend/on the phone/ignoring me. I try to make conversation while the ridiculously slow card machine is going, even if it's just 'that top's a lovely colour, one of our girls wears it as uniform'. I work in an upmarket women's clothing shop and this is the basic that is expected.

However, I've also worked in Argos, and tbh, I don't think you can expect perfect service (argh) somewhere like that. Not downright rudeness, certainly, but if you're the 300th customer that person has served today, and 280 of them have been really rude, you do tend to lose your faith a little bit.

i used to be a croupier. we were never allowed to pass anything hand to hand, coz the cameras couldnt see eaxctly what/how much it was. it gets to be a habit too!

maybe theyve been told to put it on counter so the cctv can 'see' it in case theres ever any dispute?

foxinsocks · 08/03/2008 18:25

a person in Boots did that just before they handed me their change the other day ewwwww

though he didn't have any weeping sores

Can I just add that most of the people who work in this shop are lovely and chatty, friendly and patient, even with me!

It really annoys me when shop assistants insist on putting the receipt in the bag when I'm waiting with my purse open and my hand outstretched!

Hello Chequers hows the bumping going? Lots of strange threads about today you know

Right back to topic, I have managed a shop and a pub and I too find it rude when you hold out your hand for change and it in plonked on the counter.... when I was working if I held out my hand and the money was dumped on the counter I would dump the change on the counter (yes I am childish) but if someone handed me the money I would always hand them the change.
I am forever reminding my sons not to put the money on the counter as it is rude and I get very cross if my change it delivered that way.
If I have my nails on it is a bugger to pick up

StealthPolarBear · 08/03/2008 21:06

What if you are handing over a note? I would never dump fiddly coins on the counter but am probably guilty of putting a note down while I faff with my purse or whatever.
