To think we should avoid London right now?

Due to visit London in the next few weeks.

Anxious with Palestinian protests and so forth in the news. I don’t want to be near that with young children, and worried that it may escalate to some sort of attack.

We are not Jews, but presuming as the U.K. is supporting Israel that we’ll all be fair game ie there might be an attack/bomb somewhere prominent to send a message to gov.

Have been in London during terrorist attacks before and I’d rather avoid.

AIBU to consider rescheduling our family trip to next year?

I see the OP got their intended outcome which of course was not really about autistic children. Sigh.

It's a worrying time for Muslims AND Jews.

absolutely
and in my UK city today there's only one flag being worn/waved
one side chanting
and it sure ain't Israelis/Jewish people
I would be terrified to be Jewish in this country right now

Photographsandmemories · 14/10/2023 16:03

I don't live in London but yesterday there was a substantial crowd outside the Town Hall chanting Free free Palestine and Death to Israel.

It's horrible and it's violent but it's better than having such protests banned, isn't it? I am grateful to live somewhere where some degree of free speech is still just about tolerated.

Thank you, I am Jewish, and yes we are.

Calling for the death and killing of people isn't 'protest' and it's not part of 'free speech'

You're not allowed to incite murder and genocide.

You found it horrible to walk past. I'm Jewish. How do you think it would have been for me and my kids to encounter that?

Is that free speech or is it incitement to commit violence.

Israel is a tiny strip of land a similar size to the Isle of Wight. It's the only Jewish state in the world. Why can't these people allow it to exist?

Photographsandmemories · 14/10/2023 16:17

It boils down to this: I'd rather know what they were thinking.

bemorelemmy · 14/10/2023 16:31

@BlurredEdges , I'm so genuinely sorry- I hope you know that so many people are not with these bullies
there is only one side that is allowed to show its allegiances in public- we all know this and it's disingenuous to suggest that all voices are heard equally in the media and on the streets
we know that one side is deemed fashionable, the other less so
we know that (fake) leftist bullies will latch onto all this the minute they enter art school
we had pro-palestinian protests outside my kids fkn school last year- very intimidating for non-Jewish children- never mind the Jewish kids
I wish you well- I do wonder if a tipping point will be reached
I don't mean in relation to mid east politics- I simply mean in the way we behave in this country- the way in which anti-semitism is countenanced- we can't keep quiet any longer

I don't think you understand how mob mentality, incitement to violence and racial hatred work.

People in massive crowds aren't just a bunch of individuals sharing their opinions.

It is a mob whipping up murderous violence against Jews. And you're in favour of it?

Ramalangadingdong · 14/10/2023 16:37

“there is only one side that is allowed to show its allegiances in public”

Weirldly, the royal family, keir Starmer, Rishi Sunak and their various mobs have all publicly stood with the Israeli govt and sanctioned them doing anything they want to protect themselves. I doubt a few “art students” will have any effect on the situation whatsoever - unfortunately.

Thank you so much for this. The only silver lining in the absolute hell of the past week (and looking to continue) is the solidarity and support shown by those who can see whats happening.

We've felt so alone for so long. It means a lot that many of my non Jewish friends have reached out to me in real life and also the kindness of many (not all....) posters on here. It really helps to feel less alone. It's still a horrendous and terrifiyg time though. I have never before in my life felt too scared to go on the tube (lifelong Londoner) but I wouldn't go today.

I'm struggling to hold it together and sympathetic decent people like you make a big difference.

(BTW is your username a hawkwind/motorhead reference?)

HappyMavis · 14/10/2023 16:44

Hi OP, I just got back from a trip to London today and the only thing that got murdered was my wallet! Hope that insight from being "on the ground" helps.

Photographsandmemories · 14/10/2023 16:47

I understand how those things work. I'd still rather know. There is a huge tide of murderous intent and hatred here; we have seen from past events that it doesn't just go away if it's driven underground.

The general response of the non-Muslim public here to these demonstrators has been extremely negative if It's any comfort to you.

BlurredEdges · 14/10/2023 16:50

@Photographsandmemories I don't really agree but i do understand where you are coming from. And yes, it is a comfort to hear that, so thank you.

Vocaladvocaat · 14/10/2023 16:51

OP London today for the most part is very busy, safe and with a police presence. Lots and lots of people are out enjoying the sunshine. Let’s not incite fear unnecessarily, perhaps? Sorry to those on BOTH sides who have suffered. It is sad that people here are judged and harmed for the actions of others far away. Most of us are just trying to live our lives.

bemorelemmy · 14/10/2023 17:18

well, @BlurredEdges you've encouraged me to check in on the lovely Israeli lady who works in our local card shop. she's been very kind to me in the recent past and I have been wondering about her this last week. No harm in saying hope you're ok.
and, yes, my username is in homage the late, great lemmy kilmister- someone who seemed genuinely kind, regardless of fashion and definitely ploughed his own furrow :)

Youneverknowwhatyourgonnaget · 14/10/2023 18:00

I am going to New York next week and I feel the same. I have decided to stop watching the news because it’s making me more anxious. I suppose it could happen any time any place and we can’t live not doing things for the fear it might happen. The world is a very scary place these last few years though I would love to keep my family home safe and sound all the time but what life is that….

LalaPaloosa · 14/10/2023 18:02

I didn’t leave my house on Friday 13th after reading about the call for global jihad. I WFH instead. I’m avoiding the tubes and public places. Some of my friends are mocking me for this, but better safe than sorry.

Hmm1234 · 14/10/2023 18:17

You're assuming Palestinians are going to bomb like Zionist Jews don’t exist. Crazy how brainwashed by politics and the media people can be

MaggieHM · 14/10/2023 18:17

And the bed bugs on the tube.

TrixieMixie · 14/10/2023 18:25

I went into work as usual near the protests. Didn’t think about it much. Chances of being caught up in something like that and killed/hurt are small and random.

Poodles23 · 14/10/2023 18:32

I’d definitely cancel. It’s clear to see on either tv, YouTube or Facebook etc the protesters filling the streets. People who say everything is fine are burying their heads in the sand and most likely only watch main stream media which cover up/hide what’s going on in Britain from the public. Things are bad all around the country and sooner or later everyone will know about it.

Iaintsadwhenugotobed · 14/10/2023 18:33

This post is a bit silly. What is the point of it? If you are afraid then don’t go and if you are not then go? What else can anyone say to you really? It seems like it’s to spark a divide between posters. This is mumsnet so the stance will be all lives matter on this platform surely especially the children. There are peaceful protests going on as far as anyone knows, but u already know this and if u are uncomfortable then don’t go

Anele22 · 14/10/2023 18:37

Because since when have you heard of a bomb or indeed any violence in the UK from a group protesting for Israel?
