To think this is too much to pay for a cake???

We're having a double celebration (not a wedding) but we thought we'd get one cake to celebrate both events. Cake in the shape of numbers but decorated in two different styles.

The baker was recommended to me and is consistently recommended on our local social media. I don't want to hassle them and i might not get anyone else as the event is soon. But the quote is for 3 figures, ie over £100!!!!

The last cake I bought was £65, nearly 8 years ago so I'm a bit surprised. Am I being really mean and this is a reasonable price?

I'm sorry, I really don't think I've worded my question well. I'm a bit surprised the quote is over £150, I was expecting between £100 and £120. I don't think the Baker is being unfair or ripping me off - her cakes look amazing and she is an absolute artist.

It's more - should I do this? Is this an unaffordable luxury and I should stop asking for the moon and be more sensible? Over £150 for something that could be eaten an evening!

Should I accept it's too expensive and get something else?

Depends really. Mn are weird about cake prices. I’ve just paid £35 for this, bearing in mind I cut the bottom bit off as it has DD’s name on, which was in a marble effect in the same colours surrounded by stars. No doubt everyone on here will tell me how shit and poor quality it is but I’m happy with it

Was that made by a professional with the certificates etc? Looks quite nice for £35 but I would expect a much higher standard for 150-175 (I'm guessing £165)

xyz111 · 12/10/2023 22:04

It's not just the ingredients. It's the bakers time. They are on a hourly rate too.

No one can really answer that for you as it depends how much you value cake

Thedm · 12/10/2023 22:05

If you can’t afford it then you can’t afford it, but it is a perfectly normal price for what you’ve asked for.

Independent workers have to make a living. You’re paying for their skill, the ingredients, the time, the running costs, her profit on top. If you can’t afford it then you can’t afford it, but she isn’t the unreasonable one.

How much would you pay for a family meal out?

musicforthesoul · 12/10/2023 22:07

Only you can decide if its worth it. I don't dispute its a fair price but i wouldn't pay that much for cake, I consider it a waste of money.

Home made cake is nicer than mass produced and professionals can do much better decoration than I can but for me it's not so nice it's worth the cost difference! That's a judgement call for you.

booksandbrooks · 12/10/2023 22:08

That is normal bespoke price range and I promise you the baker will not be getting rich from it either. It's far more than I would spend but it's a fair price nonetheless.

TheShellBeach · 12/10/2023 22:08

That's the price I'd be expecting to pay.

Op I love how the price is going up with every post, cringing for you 😂

Yes, qualified and insured. It’s all a matter of opinion with quality vrs price I guess. I’d rather this for £35 than what I think half of people on here are quoting and picturing. She made my son this for £55 after I got turned down by quite a few other bakers as the shape was ‘too awkward and they’d have to look into it’ (and then all blanked me)

To think this is too much to pay for a cake???
AmIjustreallymean · 12/10/2023 22:09

Well, I thought I'd decided until you said that!!!

I was like 'Let's do it!' And now I'm like "damn, she's right "

Sounds about right. The bakers costs will have gone up the last few months. I make cakes (just for family and don't charge!) but I think people really underestimate the amount of time that goes into it.

Honeyroar · 12/10/2023 22:11

£65 to £100 sounds about right. I started a coffee and cake business two years ago. Prices of ingredients have almost doubled in that time. And electric etc too.

Onelifeonly · 12/10/2023 22:12

Having never ordered a cake, I have no idea of price, but if it's what you want, I'd just pay for it. I guess you would expect it to have gone up considering prices have risen a lot recently.

AmIjustreallymean · 12/10/2023 22:12

Can I also say I genuinely didn't realise 2 numbers meant more cake and cost. I thought they just made a square cake and cut the numbers out or they made both numbers smaller to normal cake size.

I'm really not a Baker, I don't actually think I've ever made a cake.

I made my parents a 60th wedding anniversary cake two weeks ago. A rich vanilla sponge filled with jam and decorated with Italian meringue icing, the ingredients included 14 eggs ( meringue was 7 egg whites) vanilla pod £6, food coloring gels, 750g butter. The ingredients alone cost over £30 . I was surprised at how the cost mounted up and obviously my time wasn't charged so £100 seems reasonable.

Bertiesmum3 · 12/10/2023 22:15

Not only are you paying for the cake, you’re paying for the ingredients and the bakers time, which would be a fair few hours and legally they have to pay themselves minimum wage
so yes you’re being tight!

I didn't want to be too specific but people have seen £100 and thought that's what was quoted. £100 I would have paid already but it was over £150!

Not trying to drip feed and I am going to work on my written communication skills!!!

Boysnme · 12/10/2023 22:16

I think this is completely reasonable. I offered to make a friends cake recently after she’d been quoted £75 for a very simple cake.

I was £30 for ingredients and had I been charging for my time would have hit £75 easily and I am a hobby baker and in no way a professional.

CutiePatooties · 12/10/2023 22:16

I bought this birthday cake in May - cost me £90.

To think this is too much to pay for a cake???
therealcookiemonster · 12/10/2023 22:18

OK....I know my name says cookiemonster but I am also an expert on cake. specifically, buying and eating it.... and sometimes making it

I think £100 for a bespoke cake is very good value personally....

hope you chose good flavours....

Lovely! And a great price!

Angrycat2768 · 12/10/2023 22:18

I bake my own cakes for my family birthdays etc. It costs a fortune in ingredients alone. I went on a cake decorating course, and the time involved is phenomenal, and I was not good at it. I never complain about the price of cakes because the labour involved, as well as the cost of ingredients is extremely high. They take absolutely ages to make and decorate.
