To think this is too much to pay for a cake???

We're having a double celebration (not a wedding) but we thought we'd get one cake to celebrate both events. Cake in the shape of numbers but decorated in two different styles.

The baker was recommended to me and is consistently recommended on our local social media. I don't want to hassle them and i might not get anyone else as the event is soon. But the quote is for 3 figures, ie over £100!!!!

The last cake I bought was £65, nearly 8 years ago so I'm a bit surprised. Am I being really mean and this is a reasonable price?

Which would be a 50% price increase, this is assume the cake is £100 - OP has said it’s in the 3 figures so who knows

The OP is ordering two cakes

Mum2jenny · 12/10/2023 21:48

I voted YABU as I paid a lot for a specific cake for my dd many moons ago and it was £80 pounds. I guess it really depends how much they wanted for the cake. You said 3 figures, that could be £101 to £999. Quite a lot of choice??

AmIjustreallymean · 12/10/2023 21:48

Thank you for the responses and my apologies - I should have been more clear about the price. I didn't want to give the exact figure but its over £150.

But under £200?

user1477249785 · 12/10/2023 21:50

I think this is a total bargain and I expect the cake maker isn't making much profit

Merryoldgoat · 12/10/2023 21:51

This is why I stopped making cakes except for family and friends.

Username82y · 12/10/2023 21:51

£100 is cheap for a professionally made cake. Buy a supermarket cake if you can't afford it

SpringSummerDreamer · 12/10/2023 21:51

That sounds really inexpensive for a bespoke hand-made cake. It's the centrepiece of your celebration and you're paying for the baker's skill and training, plus use of any special baking tins and cakeboard. It's not just the ingredients and oven-time.

Redwinestillfine · 12/10/2023 21:52

It depends what your taste is and whether it's worth the money for tou. It's not difficult to make a really lovely homemade cake. I made my own wedding cakes. Homemade always tastes better anyway. In my experience shop bought cakes never taste super. Plus all the preservatives, even in the more handmade end of the shop bought scale that they need to keep them fresh are not great for you. If you don't mind the taste of shop bought though or ultra processed and you're handy at decorating then you can get plain cakes from the likes of Waitrose just iced with white icing and decorate yourself?

AmIjustreallymean · 12/10/2023 21:53

Yes, between £150 and £175.

I do appreciate the skill and time but £150+ is a lot of money for me! If that's the going rate, I'll suck it up but I'm also worried I've asked for the moon and I need to be a little more vanilla (pun intended)

Depends really. Mn are weird about cake prices. I’ve just paid £35 for this, bearing in mind I cut the bottom bit off as it has DD’s name on, which was in a marble effect in the same colours surrounded by stars. No doubt everyone on here will tell me how shit and poor quality it is but I’m happy with it

It’s more that you’ve ordered 2 cakes but want to pay for 1…

littleripper · 12/10/2023 21:55

I made a 70 cake for my Uncle and it cost me £70 to make - just the ingredients, cake board, decorations etc. I think a professional would have some economy of scale but it's still going to be at least £50 cost, not including labour.

gotomomo · 12/10/2023 21:55

I enquired for my mums 70's, they wanted £120! Instead I bought two pans at £7.99 each and made it myself, ingredients were around £12, tasted great though I say it myself. I then have let people borrow the pans

OrangeVelour · 12/10/2023 21:55

So now it's nearer to £200 than £100...

Catza · 12/10/2023 21:55

As a handmade business owner, I get these comments all the time. People have no clue how long it takes or how much it costs to make something professionally as their only point of reference is mass produced alternatives. How long would it take you to bake and decorate two cakes? After ingredients, utilities, packing supplies, VAT and income tax I’d be surprised if the baker gets minimum wage out that £150+ fee

Then buy a supermarket cake

gotomomo · 12/10/2023 21:56

Should add, I'm fairly proficient at piping, I didn't buy ready made decorations

MedievalWell · 12/10/2023 21:57

I love the tease that it’s between £150 and £175 but we can’t know the exact figure!

Hankunamatata · 12/10/2023 21:58

Cake ingredients alone have cost me £40 plus just for large layered sponge.

If it’s a lot of money to you then don’t buy it. Things done professionally cost a lot of money, that’s just life. Supermarket cakes exist for a reason.

FrazzledMCPremenopausalWoman · 12/10/2023 22:00

Totally reasonable for a bespoke cake.

It's a lot of money for most people! But that's a decent rate for two cakes in different styles!

Dixiechickonhols · 12/10/2023 22:02

This baker is £180 for 2 numbers like this says serves 40/50. So price quotes seems accurate.

Don’t buy it then 🤷‍♀️
