So neighbour has no car and is 80+. Driveway with dropped kerb across length of house . We parked across our drive and about 2 foot across hers . She has put cones up on her drive next to path as she doesn’t like people turning in her drive . She put note on car saying move out but literally taking up 2ft of 30 ft drive that no one uses . Aibu , she has called police .

It doesn’t matter if she doesn’t use it for parking, it’s not your drive you are being unreasonable to use any of it.

You shouldn’t park in front of a dropped curb.

dementedpixie · 11/10/2023 20:54

It's not your drive so stay off it

UndercoverCop · 11/10/2023 20:55

It doesn't matter if she uses it or not, it's her property! YABVU.

thistimelastweek · 11/10/2023 20:56

Her drive is clearly delineated.
Why are you on it?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/10/2023 20:56

You’re not allowed to park in front of a dropped kerb even if your own

Alstroemeria123 · 11/10/2023 20:56

Why is her age relevant here?

You shouldn’t park across dropped kerbs anyway so YABVU.

Soonenough · 11/10/2023 20:56

Her drive is not for you to unilaterally decide to use. Maybe if you had asked permission first , she might have consented . She may have visitors , care workers visiting, deliveries or even may need an ambulance. Not your drive , get off.

TicTacNicNak · 11/10/2023 20:56

I don't blame her using the cones. I live on a main road which often has traffic jams and it gets annoying the amount of people who think it's ok to use your driveway as a turning place.

It's irrelevant if the neighbour doesn't use her drive. It doesn't entitle up you to park across her dropped kerb. Why did you need to do so?

RoyKentFanclub · 11/10/2023 20:57

Get off her drive

GOODCAT · 11/10/2023 20:57

It is a dropped kerb, you shouldn't park in front of it. She might not have a car but she may have visitors or deliveries.

titchy · 11/10/2023 20:57

My neighbour has a shed she never uses so I put my lawn mower and gardening tools in there. She was so rude and told me to remove them. But she never uses it! WIBU?

Same thing...

Zingy123 · 11/10/2023 20:57

You are a CF. It's her drive and you have no rights to park over it.

Tiredmum100 · 11/10/2023 20:57

I think yabu. Maybe she wants to keep it clear for guests, district nurses, carers etc.

Mellowautumnmists · 11/10/2023 20:58

Would you be using the drive if it belonged to a young well built man (thug!) who didn't drive either?

VerticalSausages · 11/10/2023 20:59

OP is not parked on the drive itself.

Whilst lots of pious people are correctly highlighting that you shouldn’t park across a dropped curve, in these circumstances it’s not exactly having any impact. Your neighbour is clearly a bit intense. The police will give zero fucks.

Gazelda · 11/10/2023 21:00

How often do you park across her driveway?

If it's a one off, then I agree she may be being a bit confrontational. But she's in the right, technically.

If you park like that regularly, then YABU.

Tilllly · 11/10/2023 21:01

You know you shouldn't be using her drive without her consent

But her calling the police is a little bit over the top
I can't imagine you're going to be arrested any time soon

AdviceNeededPlease11 · 11/10/2023 21:03

I can’t see what her issue is either. If it’s a 30ft wide drive (which does seem excessive) parking over 2ft of the dropped kerb is going to make no difference to any visitors/ care workers/ ambulance that wants to park on her drive. When the council came round to do a dropped kerb for my neighbours they ended up making it far wider than was originally planned and no one objects to people parking slightly over as it doesn’t obstruct the drive in any way.

LightDrizzle · 11/10/2023 21:12

As others have mentioned, you can’t park obstructing any part of a dropped kerb.

Why is she arsed? We’ll amongst other possible reasons she may be starting to feel a bit vulnerable due to age and worries it could be the thin edge of the wedge and to be fair, CFs do often test the waters before escalating when they want to take the piss.

Years ago we bought a cottage with a right of way across our garden for the very elderly next door neighbour. Very, very shortly after moving we saw her trundling past our kitchen window and I popped out to say hello as we hadn’t met, she slightly truculently told me she had a right of way and I immediately reassured her that the solicitors had flagged that to us and we knew and we were fine with it. Thereafter she would exercise her right very rarely (it led to nowhere she could want to go any quicker than using the quiet road we were both on) and I get it, she didn’t want her rights eroded. We got on very well and she was lovely with my tiny daughter, who I found out at a very late stage used to scrounge broken biscuits off her 😂

cartagenagina · 11/10/2023 21:15

Is this some kind of reverse?

Assuming not, of course YABU. You must know you can’t park across someone’s dropped kerb.

Squidwardthesnail · 11/10/2023 21:18

YABU. My neighbors used to block my drive because I didn't have a car so didn't understand why it was a problem. Not having a car doesn't mean you never have guests or deliveries, and it doesn't mean the space is fair game.

Lou670 · 11/10/2023 21:19

It is of no relevance whether or not she owns a car, nor is her age. You cannot park over the access to her drive. She may not use her drive but her visitors may do. My neighbour is 90 and no longer drives, should I use her drive then? You are clearly taking advantage of her and the fact that she doesn't drive or own a car. Try being a good neighbour.

AnOldCynic · 11/10/2023 21:29

Sounds like it's a 30ft wide dropped kerb. That's two parking spaces long. Plenty of room. No reason to kick up a fuss. Assume there's a backstory?

@Eastendersss The neighbour is batshit. Either that or is on Mumsnet with the rest of the dissenters.
