To be really annoyed by this at Sainsbury's

I was at a large branch of Sainsbury's yesterday evening. None of the staffed checkouts were open, so I went to the self-checkouts. On the way out of them they have fitted gates which don't open until you scan your receipt.

If there was a person barring my exit from a shop until I showed them my receipt, I'd feel insulted by what was effectively an accusation of theft. Having a machine perform the same role felt similarly insulting.

I appreciate that retail theft has increased, but treating every one of your customers as if they're a thief until they prove otherwise is not the right thing to do! (also I expect most theft at self-checkouts happens by people who do still check something out therefore have a receipt).

They are a money making business with shareholders who expect returns. If they increase costs and impact returns some investors will move lowering share price.

fedupandstuck · 11/10/2023 12:52

@dcsp if there was no one around, you could have presumably left the self service area the same way you entered it and then exited the shop through one of the unopened till lanes? Then there would be no need to scan your receipt.

This is a post I seen online the other day and very much agree with:
(copied and pasted below)

Dear Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Lid, Aldi, Waitrose, Morrisons, and all other stores that have self checkout.

You are heading towards almost exclusively self-checkout now.

The lady checking receipts at the exit was stopping
everyone (interchange for barriers!)

I didn't choose to participate in that nonsense, I had already

🛒 filled my cart
🛒 emptied my cart
🛒 scanned the items
🛒refilled my cart

and so I just skipped the exit line and left.

I heard her saying "umm - Excuse me " as I kept walking and raised the receipt above my head, leaving the store.

You can either trust me to do self-checkout, or you can put your cashiers back in place like it used to be.

I'm not interested in proving that I did your job for you.

• If you want me to be a cashier with no training then that's vour problem not mine.

• Keep employing young people and give them job opportunities.

YOU DON'T PAY ME TO SCAN MY OWN SHOPPING.

YOU DON'T GIVE ME STAFF DISCOUNT FOR WORKING FOR YOU.

Signed ....All of us

These are jobs that are needed to have for young and old

For real?
Even at a staffed till you still have to fill you cart, empty your cart and refill it (oh the horrors!) so it's justifiable to take a weeks shopping without paying for the inconvenience of scanning it yourself? Righto 🤣
You're as bad as OP!

How does it work thou when u actually decline receipt ? Cus our local ones asks do you want printed receipt!

As a PP has said, the receipt is issued automatically - you don't get asked if you want it or not.

SalviaDivinorum · 11/10/2023 12:54

@DivaDroid

The sweet little old lady attempting every day to get away with scanning 1 newspaper with her other 2 or 3 tucked inside it.
The well dressed office person hoping we won't see the wine or whatever under their bags.

So the sweet old lady puts her receipt for the one paper through the machine. She has a receipt so it lets her out.

Same for the wine thief who has some scanned shopping.

How exactly does that stop the shoplifting?

Fairyliz · 11/10/2023 12:56

I don’t really understand how this works?
I could scan ten things but put twenty in my bag. This way I would still have a receipt but only pay for half of my shopping, or less if I only scan the cheap stuff.
Do they also go through your bag and count the items?

AnnaMagnani · 11/10/2023 12:58

I don't mind as I keep the receipts anyway.

However if you've lost it in your pocket you just walk out with someone else so it's not dramatically effective.

RaininSummer · 11/10/2023 12:42

I wouldn't have an issue with that but I was a bit flummoxed when the security guy at Lidl wanted to check the trolley and my handbag last month. I let him get on with as obviously they do have a lot of shoplifting but I was told by an ex store detective years ago that they had to see you take something and leave without paying or they couldn't prosecute.

A store employee has to have reasonable grounds to suspect you are shop lifting and even then they can’t search you without your consent - if they have a reason to suspect, they should detain the customer and call the police. They are not entitled to routinely approach customers on a stop and search basis. They also can’t legally enforce bag searches on entering the store - even if there are notices up to that effect. They may prevent you from entering the store if you refuse, but legally it’s not enforceable. It’s also incorrect to think that they have to wait until a suspected shop lifter has left the store to take action. If the person is perceived to be hiding goods then they may be approached in the store, and if otherwise suspected they can be stopped as soon as they are past the payment point.

QueenCamilla · 11/10/2023 12:58

I'll shop there more if this gets rolled out across stores. Probably makes a more pleasant environment with less scummies. 👍

P. S.
Don't ever go on the tube. All those turnstiles treating everyone like ticket-less criminals!

Blathermoa · 11/10/2023 12:59

Every time I've used a self service machine recently it's asked if I want a receipt- off the top of my head, Boots, M&S, Lidl all ask.

At my local Sainsbury's the barriers are at the front and back entrance, not just to the self service bit. Very irritating when they don't have the specific thing you want!

NoLikeyNoLightey · 11/10/2023 13:00

It's a bit of an inconvenience when it takes ages to scan the barcode but otherwise, it's not that deep

IslandsInTheSunshine · 11/10/2023 13:00

I think you ought to save your energy for more important things like Israel and not get your knickers in a twist over showing a receipt.

Get a grip.

You sound incredibly over sensitive over something very minor.

Vegetus · 11/10/2023 13:01

Some things I read on here are so stupid they can't possibly be true. I hope this is one example of that.

Differentstarts · 11/10/2023 13:02

dcsp · 11/10/2023 12:25

It's not an inconvenience at all - that's not what's bothering me.

What's bothering me is the insinuation that they don't trust me to have not stolen from them - I need to prove that I've not before they'll let me go.

Why would they trust you, do you trust complete strangers. Shoplifters aren't just teenagers and drug addicts their mothers, nurses, millionaires, the elderly ect ect

SerendipityJane · 11/10/2023 13:04

As an aside, I am sure the barriers are linked to the fire alarm ?

trainboundfornowhere · 11/10/2023 13:04

They have had the barriers at my local Sainsbury’s for a while. The machines don’t ask if you want a receipt they automatically print one out. Doesn’t bother me.

TheOGCCL · 11/10/2023 13:04

Just seems a bit ridiculous as in my local branch one person scans and about ten people walk through so if you'd shoplifted you'd just tail gate. Even people not shoplifting wait to tailgate either as their receipt isn't scanning or the tech is a bit beyond them. No one manages the gate which I think you need if you actually want to make it a deterrent. It's a waste of paper otherwise too.

They can't have it all ways, get rid of most of the staff, in a COL crisis, and expect not to have shrinkage.

The scanners are connected to every item in the store and there are scales in the bagging area which check the weight of the item scanned against what you are placing in the bag. So, if you place something in the bag without scanning it, the system will know, or if you scan a joint of beef, but ring it up as a banana, the system will know and will advise you of an ‘unexpected item in the bagging area’.

You haven't got the option to decline a receipt if there's a barrier to exit.

SunsetsAndSandwiches · 11/10/2023 13:05

You don't have a right to shop at Sainsburys. You are on private property whilst you are there and they can set rules (as long as they're within the law) about what you can and can't do. If you don't like it, go elsewhere.

Such a good point too.

Doteycat · 11/10/2023 13:06

I Agree.
I mean, when they asked me to show my ticket at the airport to PROVE i had paid for my flight without just letting ME on the plane, well I was just livid. LIVID I tell you. How dare they.

Crunchymum · 11/10/2023 13:07

Sainsburys makes everyone scan their receipt to exit - regardless of whether you use self service or a manned check-out? Are you saying someone asked to see your receipt after you went through the barriers?

Just change Supermarket if it hurts you so much. No-one forces you to go there
