Internal doors - Open or closed?

Normally are the doors in your home open or closed?

You are being unreasonable = Open

You are NOT being unreasonable = Closed

Thanks!

Closed is my preference. Particularly since we had a pigeon come down the chimney.Due to getting my kids and nephew out of the house to holiday camp most doors were open. I thought I had done a pretty decent clean but was still finding signs of pigeon poo weeks later.

WeWereInParis · 10/10/2023 13:22

Closed overnight but I don't really pay attention during the day

Oohmontydon · 10/10/2023 13:25

Every door closed at night, even bedrooms, as per advice of fire safety officer.

During the day it's weather dependent as to whether they are open.

Bobbotgegrinch · 10/10/2023 13:27

The cat would not tolerate them being closed, and of course we as mere humans have to cater to her whims.

Pandor · 10/10/2023 13:28

All open, except at night when our bedroom door is shut. We have mains smoke alarms in every room/landing (except for bathrooms) so rely on that to give us enough warning to mitigate fire risk.

I am not convinced about the benefit of closed vs. open doors.

For example with open doors, the smoke should reach the alarms faster, which should make it easier to wake up when the fire is small, and also allow the householder to deal with it, whereas with closed doors that might help limit the spread of the fire better when it reaches a certain size, but also limits the ability of the smoke to get to the alarms, therefore ensuring the fire is bigger before the alert sounds.

Some chinscratching for me.

BarnacleBeasley · 10/10/2023 14:17

@GasPanic where I live (in Scotland) the smoke alarms have to be linked. We have them in kitchen, hallways, and living room. It was advice from the fire service, who ought to know, that we should leave the doors closed at night.

I can certainly see how if you have one in every room and they are linked then it makes more sense to keep the doors closed.

Mine are in the hall/stairwells only. I probably wouldn't put one in the kitchen (greatest probability of fire but also highest probability of false trip) but I could put them in other rooms.

PhantomUnicorn · 10/10/2023 14:31

open during the day, we close the doors to the kitchen/diner overnight.

Bedroom doors are always closed at night, and we have fire alarms/smoke detectors on all 3 floors.

SirenSays · 10/10/2023 14:34

Open during the day, closed at night.

StillWantingADog · 10/10/2023 14:35

Open unless heating is on. In which case closed.

Chickenwing2 · 10/10/2023 14:37

We have bedroom and bathroom doors closed to stop the puppy going in. All other doors typically open.

ThinWomansBrain · 10/10/2023 14:39

I designed my flat with hardly any internal doors.
the ones that i do have my cat doesn't like them being closed.

saoirse31 · 10/10/2023 14:40

You made me think op! ... and answer is always open. I dislike having them closed except for night time re fire safety.

I dont know why, except maybe a small two up two down house!!!.

BarnacleBeasley · 10/10/2023 14:41

@GasPanic in the kitchen you get a heat alarm, not a smoke alarm, so there are no false trips but it detects a fire.

Trevforsure · 10/10/2023 14:42

Usually all open during the day (living room closed if we’re out) and bedrooms and living room closed at night (living room was to stop the cat going in and clawing the sofa/eating the hamsters when we weren’t there and the habit remains even now she’s gone)

PIL are a door closed household and I don’t like it, feels almost unfriendly to walk in and just see shut doors.

Yes - I saw this on the FireAngel site when I looked at it just now.

I think I may get some wireless interlinked ones and a heat alarm for the kitchen.

Catza · 10/10/2023 14:42

Open unless it's a child's bedroom. Then they decide if they want them open or closed. We don't have any internal doors downstairs so I guess we are stuffed in case of fire.
This would probably be different if we lived in a different setup. For example, I grew up with my grandparents in a three bed flat and the layout meant that all doors were kept closed at night (two bedrooms exiting into the living room and one bedroom exiting into a corridor leading to the bathroom) so people can use the bathroom at night without disturbing others.

Trevforsure · 10/10/2023 14:42

We do close the doors more in the winter though to preserve the heat

smooththecat · 10/10/2023 14:43

Open, cat.

stopringingme · 10/10/2023 14:47

All bathroom doors shut.

Downstair doors are open unless cold then shut for a while, although I do like the utility room door shut.

Bedroom doors shut at night.

AffIt · 10/10/2023 14:49

Apart from my office, because cats, mostly open also because cats.

However, I prefer the door of whatever room I'm in at that point to be ajar at worst, especially during the winter.

(Although sometimes I close and even lock the bathroom door as a bit of a treat, because cats.)

plumtreebroke · 10/10/2023 14:54

Mainly open, opening and shutting doors all day would drive me nuts. If it's draughty sitting in the living room the hall door gets shut, front door doesn't seal as well as it might.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 10/10/2023 14:55

Open. I have cats to whom a closed door is a challenge to be overcome.
