What is your idea of hell on earth?

So nothing biblical.

For me today it was ASDA, 1pm on a Sunday, event going on nearby so huge amount of traffic to get in, even longer queues inside, screaming kids, adults barging by you, having to queue for customer service.

Anything else would include cave diving, pot holing or being on a submarine.

Camping holidays.

Having to host for perfectionist and critical people. Especially if they watch me in the kitchen,

And ESPECIALLY any sort of extreme sport!

Also being in hospital, I discharged myself from the postnatal ward, actually feeling trapped anywhere.

I'll second that. Having to stay in for 2 weeks because my baby was poorly and I nearly had a break down on there. Awful place

mjf981 · 09/10/2023 01:49

Car broken down at midnight on the Canadian prairies in winter. Howling wind, -30 degrees, blowing snow, unsure if I would freeze to death.

ToWhitToWhoo · 09/10/2023 01:50

Oh, and snow and ice making things slippery. That counts as an extreme sport, as far as I'm concerned.

And anyone reminding me of my birthday, especially a 'milestone birthday',

LaurieStrode · 09/10/2023 01:54

IKEA

Colourfulponderings · 09/10/2023 01:58

Pantomimes

Anywhere with large crowds, like a football match or outdoor music festival will be my idea of hell. Particularly if I can't see the way out.
Also, department stores at Christmas where you can actually get trapped by the wall of humanity. (looking at you, Liberty, your basement level floor is hot as hell and almost as hard to escape from .)
Airport terminals. Horrible.

OMG, that WOULD be my idea of Hell- glad you were rescued/ got away in the end.

GarlicGrace · 09/10/2023 02:01

IKEA. Any IKEA, any department, any length of time. Even the car park. <shudder>

Also - bear with me - Lovely Gatherings of Lovely People surrounded by Lovely Things, with Lovely Snacks, every centimetre Looking Divine and Smelling Delightful. I used to know quite a few Lovely Women, most of whom are now Instagrammers (obviously) of Loveliness. These gatherings required an unfaltering smile of Thrilled Affection, a melodious flow of insincere inanities that could not possibly be taken as churlish, offensive or sarcastic, and frequent outpourings of worship towards the hostess(es). There was often ghastly music by some drip claiming to have revived an ancient tradition, though I don't know why the Ancients would've celebrated life by means of keyless dirges played so earnestly.

I miss a lot of things about my old life. But not The Loveliness 😬

Disabledmomma · 09/10/2023 02:04

Hospital. Noisy, hot, lack of decision, faffing, waiting for my routine meds so I'm in a huge amount pain, dithering- anything but restful or a place to recover.
Someone always tries to do a runner with my very obvious non NHS issue wherlchair too.

Being lost in a Debenhams.

If you’re lost in a Debenhams you have bigger issues! They closed years ago.

Team training days. I can't even go into further detail because they give me PTSD.

Brits abroad package holidays eg Benidorm and the ilk.

Skiing is fun !!
I can't disagree with a lot of others.
My folks are taking > 2 weeks to do a cruise where they may not get off the boat even once. They have done this trip before, so won't see anything new from the boat. They have form for doing this on other cruises. Alaska (in August?) was too cold to get off. My dad can't walk far at all is excuse this time... he wouldn't dream of using a mobility scooter.

They have so many friends where they live & an active social life (Dad can drive to see his friends). So why waste 2 weeks of their life on a boat when they could fly for 6 hours to get to same destination (winter living place)?! It's so weird, and sounds very boring. Dad is muttering how bored he'll be at the winter-living place too, he doesn't have friends there.

Speaking of dull... Dad was rushed to hospital when he was suddenly discovered in a routine medical exam to have uncontrolled AFib. They let him out after about 6 days without him having got any better. He was utterly terrified and he almost died... of boredom. I'm now always going to think of medical emergencies as being masquerades for when they try to kill you with boredom.

Brussels sprouts and big white knickers 😂.

Brussels sprouts and big white knickers 😂.

Are you boiling the knickers with your sprouts, or putting sprouts in them for safe keeping?

Chiaseedling · 09/10/2023 04:07

If we’re being lighthearted
Def a cruise, esp one where you have to dress for a formal dinner - can’t think of much worse.
I’m actually quite a sociable person - I enjoyed the school run, have many friends etc and even liked Centre Parks, but there’s something about a cruise that really does sound like hell on sea!

HoppingPavlova · 09/10/2023 04:08

Soft play. Was so glad when my last aged out of that. Pure definition of hell on earth. Red hot pokers would never get me back in one for any reason, ever.

HoppingPavlova · 09/10/2023 04:13

And Enforced Fun days at work masquerading as Team Building. Appalling. I literally pray for gastro the night before. There is literally nothing everyone will like/find fun. We need to do one of these a year as a box ticking thing.
