To think what this shop assistant said to my DD was weird.

My DD is 4 and we nipped into a local one stop last night and as we’re leaving a male shop assistant said to her ‘don’t you want to stay here for the night’ she said ‘NO’ firmly and got upset and he said ‘why not? There’s lots of sweets here and things to eat’ is this weird or am I over thinking?

He was just having a little joke.... you both sound very serious and a bit grumpy!

SM4713 · 08/10/2023 12:31

Overthinking it!

WhateverAgains · 08/10/2023 12:33

It's a weird thing to say to a 4 year old stranger yes

echinaceadreams · 08/10/2023 12:33

I mean it's a weird thing to say but I would think it was just a strange joke rather than anything sinister

Lumeevme · 08/10/2023 12:33

She was being a bit fussy and was tired at the time. I did wonder if I was over thinking but he didn’t say it in a jokey tone or laugh iygwim

It's a bit weird, but in a jokey way. Not in a way that your DD needed to be upset and you needed to start a thread about it hours later!

I think a lot of kids would quite enjoy being locked in a shop like that overnight! Think of the sweets!

MorrisWallpaper · 08/10/2023 12:34

Not weird, or at least not weird beyond the usual run of slightly cackhanded things a certain kind of (usually male) person says to small children while trying to be jolly.

PunjabiGirl · 08/10/2023 12:36

Over reacting a little, it's just an old joke. My school teacher used to say to us "Oh do you all want to stay at school over the weekend?"

Lumeevme · 08/10/2023 12:36

That’s why I found it weird as he didn’t say it in an unbeat, kind of jokey way. It didn’t seem like he was trying to make her laugh or anything like that

OP posts:
WhateverAgains · 08/10/2023 12:37

Was there a conversation beforehand, any more context? Or he simply just said it from nowhere?

readbooksdrinktea · 08/10/2023 12:38

That's weird.

PunjabiGirl · 08/10/2023 12:38

Obviously you'll feel how you feel about it regardless. But I'd stop worrying now it's over and done with.

You think he was seriously asking her if she wanted a sleepover at the one stop shop?

Lumeevme · 08/10/2023 12:39

@WhateverAgains he just said it out of no where. She was being a bit fussy as we were heading towards the door and he looked and said it

OP posts:
3dogsandarabbit · 08/10/2023 12:39

Maybe he could see that she was tired and that's why he said it.

It was still a joke, even if he didn’t caper about doing jazz hands like a CBeebies presenter 🙄

PunjabiGirl · 08/10/2023 12:41

I feel sorry for some shop assistants when mumsnetters are involved 🤣 There's been a lot of threads against retail workers lately.

Kissmas · 08/10/2023 12:42

Is "being a bit fussy" code for having a tantrum? He was telling her to behave or she'd have to stay there all night.

Firmly said NO? Fucks sake

Lumeevme · 08/10/2023 12:43

It wasn’t a full like screaming tantrum she was just whinging a little bit as she was tired

OP posts:
theduchessofspork · 08/10/2023 12:44

He was joking

Just not very well

MadamVastra · 08/10/2023 12:44

report it to 101!

make sure you also post about him on Facebook-you need to make parents aware!

yawn 😂

WhateverAgains · 08/10/2023 12:44

She was misbehaving? And he said it as though to say if you don't behave you can stay here for the night. Stupid thing to say but given the context I think this was probably all he meant by it.

God it was banter because your child was whining. Ridiculous.

Lumeevme · 08/10/2023 12:45

I wouldn’t go that far I was just wondering if others thought it was weird to say

OP posts:
Incognito2023 · 08/10/2023 12:46

Not weird at all
he sounds a bit socially awkward - trying to joke to lighten situation and distract her to stop her ‘fussing’
