What’s with the obsession with food?

runoutofgoodusernames · 08/10/2023 00:53

So many threads about:
What shall I have for dinner?
Any ideas for some healthy dinners?
Blah blah blah food!

Am I the only person alive that really doesn’t care about food? I eat some kind of cereal/ yogurt combo for breakfast, sometimes forget lunch, whoops, and don’t even think about dinner other than ‘mmm bit peckish, what’s in the freezer?!’

Is this a ‘thing’ or am I abnormal? The world seems obsessed with food doesn’t it? I just eat to not die basically, what am I missing?

OP posts:
margotrose · 08/10/2023 12:32

I love food but I honestly couldn't be arsed with all the stress people on here seem to put themselves through just to make dinner.

@HettyWainty

but some people don’t think about food 24/7 though! That’s all op is saying!

No she didn't. She said other people were 'obsessed with food' because of "So many threads about:
What shall I have for dinner?
Any ideas for some healthy dinners?
Blah blah blah food!

She made no mention of people thinking about food 24/7 and her examples were not about people "obsessed with food" but just looking for tips.

It's OP who seems to think thinking about what to have for dinner is evidence of "obsession" when it really isn't. Then pointed out that anyone thinking of their next meal was a completely alien concept to her since she has much more important things to think about and barely eats. Unlike those 'obsessives'.

Ilikeyourdecor · 08/10/2023 12:37

I used to be like you. I also used to not care about the fabrics I wore or the kitchen equipment I used.

Now I've experienced high quality food, clothes and kitchen equipment I can't go back! They give me joy every time I use them.

Ylvamoon · 08/10/2023 12:38

There is so much more to food in general!

Meal planning can be fun and have purouse beyond what's for dinner? You can improve someone's mood or give them comfort or just say I am thinking of you! Or you can cook something to mark small milestones, anniversary ect.

Our meals are social, we talk about daily events, news and plans for the day / week/ Christmas...

Food is also an individual experience for the senses, there is texture, taste and smell.

I always feel sorry for people who can't see or appreciate a single point from the above.

Squiblet · 08/10/2023 12:14

She's the epitome of a 'I'm not like other girls' trope.

But why is this even a trope? Why does it make her deserving of being sneered at? I mean, good for her!

Janieforever · 08/10/2023 12:41

Neither extreme is good. It’s not good to be totally disinterested or totally obsessed. A normal healthy appetite. A quick thought of what’s for dinner etc is the mid ground.

what I don’t get is how you and others don’t understand the mid ground and are so extreme about food either way.

PurpleWisteria1 · 08/10/2023 13:02

LuckySantangelo35 · 08/10/2023 10:40

@PurpleWisteria1

Many people enjoy cooking and eating a lovely meal, or cooking something for the family to enjoy?
Food can delight the senses and be something to really look forward to!
Your food sounds very dull to me. Haven’t you ever cooked something you loved? Take it you don’t have kids?”

why would you take it she doesn’t have kids?

Becuase when you have kids (assuming they live with you) then food is a constant thought. Buying it, preparing it, making sure everyone has enough, packed lunches, allergies or intolerances maybe. It’s relentless day in, day out!
I have 3 young teenagers / pre teens- the amount of food (try to get enough healthy food in) and packed lunches I have to prepare is crazy.
Would be totally and utterly different if I was on my own or just with a partner.

Maybe some people are sneering because the OP has a hint of ‘I’m better than you’

No one likes that.

BasicBinaryBitch · 08/10/2023 13:05

HettyWainty · 08/10/2023 12:23

And I'll say exactly the same to any other 'I'm not like other girls, pick me' posts.

No woman or person for that matter has ever got to adulthood thinking that because food isn't important to them, it means everyone else is 'obsessed' .

Especially when they use forums.

Same as no adult woman or man has ever got to adulthood without knowing that people hurt each other by cheating.

Especially when they use forums.

So the "why is everyone here so paranoid about what their DP/DH does? I trust my DP/DH and if he doesn't come home till the early hours when he said he was coming home after work at 5, that's fine. I wouldn't give it a second thought because I'm not insecure" are also "not like other girls" posts. Which are rife.

But how is not liking meal prep and cooking comparable to saying 'I'm so much better, I'm not insecure'

Not the same at all, nothing to do with not like other girls

HelpMeGetThrough · 08/10/2023 13:30

what I don’t get is how you and others don’t understand the mid ground and are so extreme about food either way.

I just look on it the same way as gardening. People take pleasure from doing it, I don't. I mow the grass a cut the hedges, because I want the place to look tidy. I don't enjoy doing it though, it has to be done.

Same with food, zero interest in thinking about it, just eat as I have to.

NamelessNancy · 08/10/2023 13:50

CoalTit · 08/10/2023 10:00

All "AIBU not to 'get' ..." type posts implicitly express disapproval. Otherwise the OP would just google whatever the trend or phenomenon is that's got other people's attention.
Using terms such as "obsession" ramps the disapproval up a notch, so people are understandably impatient with the OP, especially so when the question is about something as essential to life as food is.

Then it easily drifts into "no wonder there's an obesity crisis when everyone is so obsessed with food".

middlenglander · 08/10/2023 09:51

Hi, totally agree, OP. Actually I do tend to treat myself too much with chocolate and sweet stuff (so, am not skinny), and have always had a healthy appetite generally, but beyond that basically live on pasta, toast, easy stuff. Not bothered really and certainly think there are more fulfilling and rewarding things to think about/focus on. Eating out is OK but rarely find it super exciting.
Foodism strikes me as some kind of aspirational snobbery thing, a way to differentiate oneself from the ill-informed, lazy masses who don't know any better and lack one's own refined taste buds and superior culinary/nutritional knowledge... 😁

Too much chocolate and sweet stuff
Overweight
Living on pasta, toast, easy stuff

Are you not worried about your health? Do you just eat sugar and refined carbs - what about vegetables and protein?

I don't know how old you are, but decades of such a poor diet WILL damage your health.

Being committed to eating real, healthy food is neither foodism nor aspirational snobbery. It's just commonsense, and an investment in one's future.

Not to mention that it is so much more delicious!

I wonder this too..
How can you just live on sweet stuff, pasta, bread and east food?
Whatever your weight arnt you worried about your health and life limiting disease bad eating can cause?

Majbluemug · 08/10/2023 14:25

Not abnormal but obviously better than most of these food obsessed people. Thank you for point it out.

PuppyMonkey · 08/10/2023 14:31

TBF I would love never having to think about what to buy and cook for tea ever again. Just have a pill that would satisfy your hunger and give you all the vitamins and nutrients you need. But then if you fancied going out to eat nice food or cake etc you still could of course. You just didn’t HAVE to sort out breakfast, lunch, dinner on a day to day basis when you could be doing other more interesting things instead. Sigh.

Darhon · 08/10/2023 14:40

I’ve met people for whom ‘food is fuel’ and whilst I love food, I’ve been far more functional about it since I got older and had to cook for fussy kids, so I’ve eaten stuff that wouldn’t be my preference, got bored cooking every night, and also been determined not to make it a hobby so I don’t overeat etc. so I get where you are coming from. I suspect you are not overweight and stop when you are full.

BeggyMitchell · 08/10/2023 15:07

PurpleWisteria1 some people might take it that way, it's hard to read tone in a forum like this I know. But it's equally likely she's just being honest and is curious.

LouOrange · 08/10/2023 15:09

Again, why have you not read the OP or her subsequent posts?

She didn't say 'I don't like meal prep or cooking or I don't think about food 24/7, or I don't give a fuss about food'

She said why are people OBSESSED about food and asking other people what they're having for dinner or asking for healthy dinner options.

She couldn't possibly understand why people were so OBSESSED about food. With OBSESSION meaning looking for ideas about what to have for dinner.

When OP just doesn't care about eating would rather not bother, forgets to eat and her 'headspace' is taken up with so many other more important things like writing her next novel.

Yet claims to be a) an adult who doesn't and never has, cared about food and can't understand those who do despite presumably not living in a cave her entire life and b) is apparently a parent who fed now adult DC for almost 2 decades at least and never put any thought whatsoever into preparing meals and just opened the freezer when the DC were hungry.

Which is frankly a lie.

Or she did have to, like every parent does, have to think about what to cook for dinner, plan it, shop for it and cook for it while also thinking about whether it's healthy or not. In which case, she already knows that people asking 'what's for dinner?' on an internet forum with the tagline 'for parents by parents aren't "obsessed with food blah blah blah' but just living.

She was disingenuous.

middlenglander · 08/10/2023 16:08

I'm not overweight. Am fit, healthy and very sporty. I do eat vegetables but keep things as simple as I can as I don't want to spend long preparing my meals. Pasta and toast aren't unhealthy! Maybe I eat too much sugar, yes, but, no, am not worrying about it.

Oblomov23 · 08/10/2023 17:56

I do get fed up with meal prepping. But I love food. Enjoy good food.

The people who read those threads obviously care. If you don't care for those types of threads then here's an idea - don't bloody read them!
