Have you ever dumped an entire trolley of food at a till and walked out?

I was in a Lidl store today and a very long queue built up.. and it became apparent that another till was not going to be opened despite the queue getting longer and many of whom had a big trolley load of food. There are no self service tills.

I then saw a man walk to the front and dump his entire shopping on the conveyor belt of an adjacent till and stormed out.

I'm sure if there was more staff this would've been avoided so it wasn't the fault of the person on the till. I know there is pressure on supermarkets to cut costs, but is this now getting to a tipping point in terms of impacting on customer service? Or is it the case that if you go to a so called 'discounter' type shop then you just have to accept that the service levels will be bit lower which allows them to offer lower prices?

Have you ever dumped your shopping at a till and walked out? I thought if the guy wanted to walk out he could, he didn't actually need to go the effort of unloading it all on a belt in a dramatic fashion in front over the worker and then storm out.

@Hawkins0009, if you genuinely wrote that, I'm sorry to tell you how much your writing style sounds like ChatGPT.

ive combined a few articles that listed bullet point styles, ive learned from other posters never to use chatgpt

Hawkins0009 · 08/10/2023 17:13

it seems posters are not keen on factural information just because the tool used is different human brain vs a computer program

Hawkins0009 · 08/10/2023 17:14

so instead i used the slow method of combining information from a couple of sites and resummarized the information

Costalife · 08/10/2023 18:29

I've never understood why it's quicker to dump a whole trolley and start again in another shop

Missingmyusername · 08/10/2023 18:32

No, I imagine all the food gets thrown away. A hate waste.

ReformedWaywardTeen · 08/10/2023 18:50

I didn't dump it on the belt but I did leave the whole trolley full, also in Lidl funnily enough.

The place was chaos, they were bringing out massive cardboard boxes of old stock out for 50p, never seen any other Lidl do it. I'd had one woman lose her shit at me because I leant over one of the boxes because I wanted some food from a freezer and she thought I was after her goodies.

So when I got to the till, and went to walk near an overloaded trolley of stuff, and couldn't, I moved it out the way to get past.

Only to get the actual Lidl employee who was about to serve me shout at me that it was "her stuff" and I couldn't take it! She was feral!
So I said, "well you can have this too" and left it next to the trolley she moaned about.

No regrets

Not a full trolly but I did leave a basket in Tesco express last week. Only 2 self service tills were on and one cashier. Two women decided to do fill trolly shops and put them through self serve at 8.30am when everyone was trying to dash to work. Chatting away to eachother as they did so. A guy at the cashier till was getting her to check 20 lottery tickets and buying more scratch cards. There was another worker stood at the side putting magazines into the shelf. I asked if he could open another till? He replied no sorry I have to get these out. So I put my basket on the floor and walked out saying well I have to get to work!

I did feel a bit childish after but it really boiled me. And yes, I did have to get to work lol.

Weebleonaworkout · 08/10/2023 18:53

Yes. It was my 6th consecutive week at a self scan thing in Sainsburys. The one where you scan as you go round. Then 6 weeks on the trot I had to have it all reacanned as apparently (it's completely randomn), I had been randomnly selected. I had my toddler with me each time. I just said I'd had enough and walked out. I went to Tesco for 8 years afterwards and it was only when we moved that I started Sainsburys delivering to me instead. I didn't feel guilty either. I'd had enough by then.

Years ago in Morrisons dh and I had filled the conveyor with a big shop. The guy in front was arguing over a couple of quid off some beer that was on special, but the till wouldn’t recognise it. The manager came over and the discussion went on. After 10 or so minutes the guy asked if they could do a refund or continue the discussion at customer service as people were waiting. The manager looked right at us and said loudly “they can just wait their turn” so we walked out and left all the food on the conveyor. I felt bad for the cashier though.

caringcarer · 08/10/2023 18:59

Yes, once years and years ago because I had my son who was 4 and my 3 year old niece with me and she wet her knickers so I abandoned my trolley of shopping and just got her home to change her. She was screaming at the top of her lungs too.

Smiffy58 · 08/10/2023 19:04

I did it once when my kids were small, 2 non walkers sat in the trolley seats. The woman on the Asda checkout tutted and grumbled that I was taking too long, refused to help. I just scooped my kids up and left. Never went back.

Waffle78 · 08/10/2023 19:04

I have for a very different reason. I was going through the checkout at Tesco I had my son with me about 6. DS has severe autism and ADHD no danger awareness at all. I was trying to get some bigger rein's for him. He had grown out of the toddler ones.

I did usually have DD with me. She would hold his hand which seemed to keep him calm. Even though she has autism and ADHD herself she knows he's a runner. She wouldn't want to see him get hurt. So if I couldn't keep hold of him she would. I only had a small trolley so not a big shop.

Anyway he had ran off towards the toilets. I brought him back and no he wasn't trying to tell me he needed the toilet he was still incontinent then. When he ran off the second time I brought him back and said I'm sorry he's autistic has no sense of danger I can't just leave him and trust he won't run outside. She tutted and rolled her eyes. So when he did it again I again went after him and abandoned my trolley and left.

I work in a supermarket, people dump trolleys of stuff all the time, if it's unavoidable because you've had an emergency we genuinely understand and don't think anything of it. If however you're stamping your feet because unfortunately there's queues we think you're an absolute tosser and you do get laughed about once you've left.

Also people forget their wallets/purses all the time if you let us know most supermarkets will put it to oneside if you can get back before they close.

likethislikethat · 08/10/2023 19:28

Left Costco the other day when the queue was huge and not moving

Perky1 · 08/10/2023 19:30

Yes left a trolley full once because they would accept a cheque

Evan456 · 08/10/2023 19:31

Oh yes the girl on the til was extremely rude, so I said I’ll tell you what you can put all this back and complained to the manager before I walked out

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 08/10/2023 19:34

I have left a basket in Aldi because they said the till was closing and till 8 whatever, was opening, then everyone who was BEHIND me ran to that till. I didn't have time to wait again as needed to do school run and left.
I have also left a basket in Asda because they said that my £20 note (in the days where most people used cash) was fake - another shop accepted it afterwards- and I had no other payment.

Tapasita · 08/10/2023 19:45

Only once when my card was declined. I was struggling with two kids under five, not a pot to piss in. The whole queue behind me were watching with interest as the card drama unfolded. I tried two cards, not enough money on either of them. I had to apologise to the cashier, grab the baby out of the trolley and do one. Dark days

ForfarBridie · 08/10/2023 19:52

Yes. But not in the UK. I had a trolley full of items and as I got to the check out the young guy on the till decided he’d much rather have a chat with a couple he knew who were a few tills away. He continued the chat even after I’d loaded everything on to the belt he dismissed me when I asked him to start ringing things up. He even smirked at his friends when he did it and race was obviously the driving force behind his behavior. Anyway I just kept quiet and let him think he was being really clever then when he’d rung most of it up as slowly as he possibly could with a big smirk on his face I walked away and left it all. I can still remember the look on his face and the guy who was packing the bags laughing at him.

At Christmas I was heavily pregnant and purchasing some Nosecco for me to enjoy on the big day. It was in with my big shop on the Tesco belt, and the gentleman serving me was scanning. When he got to the Nosecco he looked at me and said I need ID for this. I said it’s non alcoholic? He said doesn’t matter he needs ID. At this point as I said I’m heavily pregnant. I’m also THIRTY NINE and I can assure you I do NOT look under 25. I lost it with him and stormed out leaving all my shopping on the belt.

(btw I had no ID I wasn’t being principled here I was just furious with him as I’d been sweating my way around for an hour and I was annoyed with myself for having no ID)

Solonge · 08/10/2023 20:01

I did in France. It is a different procedure in France. The cashier doesnt get the customer to pull the band across so no more people join her queue. In France the cashier will just pull out a ‘closed’ sign and walk away from a full queue, you then have to join the back of another queue. Basically Id had two cashiers do this to me and as I was one but next at the third queue, she closed, I literally flung the trolley at the wall and never went back!

JMSA · 07/10/2023 20:13

No, because only an arsehole would do that without good reason.

Well said. They have 20 mins to put your chilled stuff back. Otherwise it's waste. Nearest checkout assistant has to come off tills and put this stuff back. So next time you think of ditching a full trolley as ques too long. You may be adding to the problem.
