How awful is this colour?

We have just spent a small fortune having the majority of our home decorated for the first time ever, it’s still ongoing. It has been a huge upheaval and I am fed up of living around the decorator, it is actually making me quite depressed as we are now 4 weeks in…however - I hate this colour paint!! I adore the emerald and gold wallpaper, but the colour is just so drab. Should I book a repaint?! If so - what colour?! (In case it’s not clear, I am not good with this stuff, I thought this would look nice but clearly I got it wrong 😩) everyone is telling me to live with it because I am finding the whole decorating process so stressful they think I’m crazy to voluntarily go through it again, partner included even though he doesn’t like the colour either.

YABU - it’s not that bad, just live with it

YANBU - yes it’s awful, change it (please give a suggested colour too!)

Wallpaper: Boutique Marquise Emerald Geometric
Paint: Dulux Natural Wicker

I like it. 🤷‍♂️

MartyFunkhouser · 07/10/2023 10:09

I agree with everyone - it’s a horrid magnolia and it doesn’t work.

I’d experiment with some paint samples.

Redpaisley · 07/10/2023 10:09

Those suggesting sage or other shades of geen, have you done a google search to see image of this kind of wallpaper to see what wall colour goes well with it?

I agree with another poster a holistic approach is needed. You need to review all the elements in the room including floor and woodwork to see what needs to be changed. Befire you spebd any more money, it would be helpful to look for images online to see what combinations work together.

Redburnett · 07/10/2023 10:10

My who.le house is painted in magnolia and has been for many years. Clearly I don't do interior decor, I would live with it rather than spend more money and have more hassle

I'd live with it and spend money on beautiful paintings / prints for the walls. The right 'thing in a frame' would make ALL the difference

If you hate decorating, I'd do this too. Buy huge prints that connect with the colours in the wall paper. At least it is neutral, reflects the light and picks up fairly accurately the gold colour in the wallpaper. I agree it is not a great colour, but it doesn't have to be if it is the neutral on which your chosen colours are displayed.

I'd paint the mirror frame in old gold or drab green to pick up the wallpaper colour, and get a really narrow console table to sit under it, also in drab green, then add some art deco-ish or abstract prints (type green and gold art deco/abstract prints into Etsy for loads of very inexpensive ideas)

Sorry I didn't mean those particular prints - they are probably too like the wall paper, but they showed up. If you click on the link there are loads more, and some rather nice abstracts too.

Manicpixidreamgirl · 07/10/2023 10:03

Sage would complement the wallpaper beautifully, allowing the subtle gold to stand out. A beige/mushroom colour will take away from the beauty of the wallpaper in my opinion.

Do you have any example image to substantiate that?

ShatParp · 07/10/2023 10:24

I LOVE the wallpaper! OP if you book a repaint please update with photos!

Hjondf · 07/10/2023 10:26

It’s too yellow toned I think and I think that’s partly what’s dulling the look of the dark green paper.

I’d keep the paper and get either Ammonite or Shadow White from farrow and ball mixed up in silk at Valspar as you’ll have no fun trying to put a Matt paint over the silk paint you’ve got.

Other option I’d say is Wickes own brand silk in colour champagne, I’ve got that in my living room and it’s a lovely off white with sort of linen-y undertones and the paints lovely quality for the price but you’d have to sample it first as I don’t know if that would be a bit too yellowish next to the gold.

I’d definitely not keep it if you hate it, painting is a much quicker job than papering and everything they’d have that done in a day.

Wavessea · 07/10/2023 10:32

I don’t understand the issue
it goes with the wallpaper
the colour is fine
but for me I absolutely hate the wallpaper
im clearly in the minority

gloriawasright · 07/10/2023 10:33

I think another of the problems is that you have lovely white skirting boards and banisters, they just make the wall look even more buttery coloured.
I would go down a fresh green route.
There are a lot of shades to chose from .

UltimateInteriors · 07/10/2023 10:38

very awful, as you ask.

Prescottdanni123 · 07/10/2023 10:42

I love the wall paper. The paint just doesn't go unfortunately. The two colours just don't compliment each other. The wall paper is bringing out the yellow tones in the paint and the paint is making the green in the wall paper look a bit dull. I'd be tempted to have the wall's a white matte maybe, which would make the green colour of the wall paper pop a bit more. White walls sometimes require a bit more maintenance though as it can show any marks/stains quite badly.

Dizzydeers · 07/10/2023 10:43

Examples of green paper with green paint - I think it looks great.

With that wallpaper I would go whole hog with something like Farrow and Ball Downpipe.

masking123 · 07/10/2023 10:46

@Dizzydeers This is what I meant. Maybe with some lighter shades or an off-white to contrast and help create some semblance of space in the hallway. My living room is the same. It's a very dark green with pale detailing. Feels very cosy yet fresh.

OhDoSitDownAndShutUp · 07/10/2023 10:48

The colour is a bit old-fashioned, but the wallpaper is really horrible

girlswillbegirls · 07/10/2023 10:50

@RachyB86
Ignore all the rude people here. Its just a waste if your energy
This is my advise: leave the paper and all the paint WHITE. It will look stunning.
I had some of my walls dark blue, a bit like your paper and we painted all the rest of the walls white. Woodwork was also white like yours. Your carpet is a neutral color. It will look really good and elegant.
All the best OP!

raffathegaffa · 07/10/2023 10:51

Definitely repaint it a dark navy to match the wallpaper and create moody vibes

ThreeLeggedPug · 07/10/2023 10:52

Ace wallpaper

Dee00 · 07/10/2023 10:53

You need a much more greenish griege type colour, without any yellow undertone. A bit like your stair carpet shade but lighter. Something like this would be perfect.

Appleast · 07/10/2023 10:57

The feature wall of wallpaper and the wallpaper itself is very dated. However if you like it that’s the important thing. The cream is warm and yellowy and the wallpaper is dramatic and cool. I’d say either get rid of the wallpaper and have cream throughout with all neutral accessories. Or, change the cream to a different colour as per the excellent suggestions above. But overall I think you’d be best with no wallpaper.

FunnysInLaJardin · 06/10/2023 10:45

that wallpaper doesn't look emerald at all to my eyes. It looks dark blue

<misses point of the thread>

This. ^

Don't know if it's just a bad photo, but that wallpaper is navy, not emerald green. Although it does say emerald green on the wrapping which is odd!!!

And the other colour is a bit private-let. Like a buttercream. I don't mind magnolia (I'm a bit old fashioned and like 1980s and 1990s stuff!) but this looks more like buttercream (or sand) coloured.

I really don't like the dark blue emerald coloured geometric wallpaper. Shock Sorry @RachyB86 Each to their own, but none of that would be going up in my house.

BigSkies2022 · 07/10/2023 11:11

I'd change it - I'm one who struggles to 'just live with' wrong colours, and I've been known to repaint rooms immediately if I think it looks bad.

You love the wallpaper - good start! I'd do a soft, pale, tonal green on the walls to pick up the paper and (deep breath) I'd wash the same colour over the woodwork - door frames, skirting boards, etc - and any radiators, because the bright white is doing nothing for the colour scheme or the space.

It shouldn't take a pro long to repaint - all the prep is done.

WorkworkworkworkworkTips · 07/10/2023 11:16

Pale olive green would look gorgeous with that wallpaper. Yes it would be a big upheaval but worth the 15 or so years of lovely decor to enjoy!!
