To hate driving so much

I passed my test around 7 years ago now, and I still hate driving so much that I avoid it as much as possible. I have the car I always wanted growing up (a Mini Cooper) sitting on my driveway fully taxed and insured that I walk past to take the bus, when driving would save me over an hour each morning.

I constantly feel like I'm going to crash my car, or end up hurting someone. I'm observant but terrified to drive in my car alone as I don't trust myself to notice everything. People who sit in the car with me say I'm a good driver, and they don't know why I worry.

It's like it just doesn't come naturally to me, none of it. I don't know why I struggle so much with it. I'm educated with two degrees, I'm responsible and cautious but not hesitant. I just hate it so much

Didn’t drive since I passed 10 years ago, til now. I took refresher lessons this year, this time in an automatic. I swore down I would never drive, but now I’m enjoying it!

I think the blunt truth here is that half of the problems on roads are caused by incompetent driving - so it’s probably a good option to choose to stay off the road.

You can either accept the fact you have anxiety and confidence issues whilst driving and work on that aspect of your life to change, or you don’t and continue to use public transport. Both are equally acceptable. You may get judged but then people will judge others for just about anything these days so it makes no difference what you do if I’m honest. Get a bus to work people will judge, drive to work people will judge the car you’re in. Do what’s right for you not others.

Just remember though, speak to your GP who may be able to refer you for CBT in order to help overcome the problem.

Refresher lessons with a good instructor would help you massively.

I passed my test at 17 but didn't drive/have a car until I was 28. I got a job that required me to drive, so I had no choice! The refresher lessons increased my confidence.

I'm now finding as I get older, and am driving much less since Covid, I'm no longer as confident as I was, but I still don't mind driving.

I hate driving. Passed 30 odd years ago, and gave up my car at the beginning of this year. One of my better ideas! I have more money and no stress!
