To wonder if anyone’s first trimester was actually ok?

I’ve heard it’s a miserable time from a few friends, one was hospitalised, but morning sickness (if heritable) never affected my mum/sisters. They say they weren’t particularly nauseous either other than the odd wave. More tired than usual is all they’ve really said about it.

AIBU to plan life as normal, including with a city break thrown in the mix?

No sickness here at any stage of pregnancy. In the first trimester had to have an early evening snack as I used to get these sudden massive hunger pangs. That was the closest thing to nausea but I'm not even sure you could call it that.

I'm not sure I'd book a city break just yet but I certainly wouldn't rule out getting one in at the last minute.

Dunnoburt · 05/10/2023 20:12

Absolutely fine here too.... until the raynauds of the nipple kicked in...

Curiosity101 · 05/10/2023 20:17

With DS1 I had horrible nausea but no sickness from week 6 - week 14 but it didn't fully ease until week 18. I genuinely considered terminating it was that bad. I was also utterly exhausted for a few weeks, struggling to even walk at a normal pace.

With DS2 I was sick for the first time at 5+1. I remember thinking how ridiculous it was that lots of people wouldn't even know they're pregnant yet 🙄. I went and got tablets which stopped the sickness. The nausea was still unpleasant but no where near as bad as with my first and it eased off pretty much entirely by week 12.

In your case I'd just make sure you can rearrange the trip or have travel insurance ready that would cover you. Especially if your sister and mum were fine 😊

UndercoverCop · 05/10/2023 20:18

I didn't even know I was pregnant until 10.5 weeks! Getting up to pee in the night and feeling a bit thirsty were the only clues

UndercoverCop · 05/10/2023 20:19

@Dunnoburt I had this! I've never come across anyone else who has! It was bloody excruciating

watchingsmurfs · 05/10/2023 20:21

Sickness wasn’t too bad, just the tiredness like nothing you’ve ever felt. Like, if I don’t go to sleep NOW I will have a nervous breakdown or possibly die. 😆

YourWinter · 05/10/2023 20:22

I sailed through them all with absolutely NO symptoms other than periods stopping. More tired with the third but the older kids were 2 and 4 and we’d just moved house when I conceived.

TowerRaven7 · 05/10/2023 20:27

I had no morning sickness at all during my pregnancy, neither did my mother or grandmother so a family thing? Most of the time if I didn’t know I was pregnant I would not have known! The only thing that bothered me was constipation at the end. In fact, the midwife miscalculated and I was a month further along than they told me I was and I was cooking a Turkey and freezing meals when my water broke. Some people have it hard, I had it easy.

McaRoonie · 05/10/2023 20:30

Of course- different people- different symptoms!
I was absolutely fine up to 30 weeks (apart from a slightly swollen belly!)
no sickness, no tiredness and felt better than ever!
But no one knows how they will feel and every pregnancy is different!
Most people I know/ have known suffer some kind of sickness so I would tend to go with the majority- it’s not common to feel absolutely no sickness/ tiredness.

ive just come out of my first trimester and have been really ill with the nausea and sickness. There’s no way I could have gone on holiday between about weeks 7 and 12. I’m 14 weeks now and am having some good days but still a few bad days and I’m so tired. Not just physically but mentally/ emotionally. I think you just can’t predict it! Some women have entirely different pregnancies with different children x

roastytoastysnowballs · 05/10/2023 20:33

Yeah..

My two babies were completely normal pregnancies. Now the labours were a different story but first/second/third trimester? Absolute gift. Loved it.

Sparklesocks · 05/10/2023 20:34

I felt very rough around weeks 4-5 and was sick a lot….but at week 8 I was on holiday in the canaries (booked before I got pregnant) and feeling fine apart from the smell of a freshly squeezed orange juice machine in a supermarket setting off my food aversion (citrus was a no-no!) - but I couldn’t have done it at week 4-5. You just don’t know unfortunately but overall I got off lightly compared to some of my friends..

Welshwabbit · 05/10/2023 20:35

Mine were both fine. Very tired for a bit but didn't feel sick.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 05/10/2023 20:39

I wouldn't plan to do any late nights out as you'll be tired and want to sleep early

DelilahBucket · 05/10/2023 20:40

I was okay up until about 20 weeks when PGP was suddenly in full swing. I had a little nausea, but wasn't actually sick.

HappyPurrrsday · 05/10/2023 20:43

I’m so so jealous. I’ve been pregnant 3 times, one of those times now.

did my pregnancy test at 4 weeks, by 5 weeks was feeling nauseous. By 6 weeks was vomiting. Spent weeks 7-8 in bed pretty much needed. Slowly been getting better now I’m out of first trimester

nocantdo · 06/10/2023 00:04

I felt shit with my first (extreme morning sickness) and now 11 was pregnant with my second and I feel even worse and lost 6kg. I can't even function to do the most basic tasks. I heard that some female athletes compete in the olympics whilst pregnant in their first trimester and then I think of myself where I can't even move my head and some women are competing for gold medals for beach volley.

EvilElsa · 06/10/2023 00:07

Mine were both OK- a bit nauseous for a while, but nothing unbearable. I was generally pretty lucky though with my pregnancies and births and sailed through with minimal problems.

Mamai90 · 06/10/2023 00:22

There is a genetic link to MS, my mum and my sister had it so I knew I was likely to get it and I did along with some other unpleasant symptoms.

With DD1 I didn't feel overly tired, I had insomnia but I was a poor sleeper pre pregnancy so I coped. Sickness and retching were awful but calmed down post 12 weeks.

With DD2 I was so weak and lethargic in the first trimester I couldn't even leave the house for 2 weeks straight, and I'm normally a very active out all day person. I felt so faint all the time. That was even worse than feeling sick, but combined had me feeling like absolute hell. I didn't even have the energy to put my shoes on.

It sounds like there's a good chance you won't get sick but insomnia and fatigue are rough during the first trimester and a city break might be a bit much. It might be worth seeing how you feel and then plan a last minute thing.

Thankfully for most women the second trimester is much easier so maybe plan the break for then.

Good luck!
