It is just another way of communicating. I quite like it as it is creative and puts over scenarios and ideas from mners imaginations which helps to build a story. It is the online equivalent of being playful, I think.

Agreed. It can be funny, can be plain irritating, but then I suppose the same is true of lots of things. When it's I want to start lobbing things at the screen.

I don't mind it actually don't do it myself much but it can be quite amusing at times.
I think it has always been around on forums and in emails and stuff every forum has a slightly different assortment of brackets.
