It’s so depressing that people think they should be able to access other people’s work for free. The creative arts is mainly staffed by freelancers and it’s tough to make a living. You people want to watch their work but don’t want to pay for it. You are pathetically entitled people.

Noone is saying they are going to watch the BBC or live TV for free they are saying they are just going to watch streaming services which you don't need TV licence for.

LaaDeeDa321 · 05/10/2023 09:40

Pointing out that people (usually those who don’t want to pay for other people’s work) very often say license instead of licence is not rude. Get a grip.

LaaDeeDa321 · 05/10/2023 09:47

@Universalsnail if you want to consume other peoples work through streaming services, that is your choice. Be aware though that creatives are working hard to be paid fairly because of people like you wanting to see and listen to their work for free. The Writers Guild of America have just been on strike because of how badly they are paid. At the moment we are sliding into a world where only the very rich can afford to be freelance creatives and that includes writers and actors. Whatever people say about the BBC they are probably the only organisation who are at least trying to open up the industry to a wider range of people, black and Asian people, working-class etc. it’s not perfect but there are a lot of good people who are trying to stem the damage that viewers who want things for free are causing. The BBC is about the only world class thing we still have in the UK and the cheapskates and the huns are doing their best to hasten its demise. It’s fucking depressing.

Excuse me, I don’t watch it. I don’t want to pay for things I don’t watch.

I didn’t ask freelancers to work for minimal pay, that’s nothing to do with me

This is one of the reasons why I continue to pay the TV licence, rather than cancelling it and doing without the occasional programme I do watch. Because I'm a heavy consumer of BBC podcasts and while I'm not required to have a licence to listen to them, I can afford it and feel it is important to support the production of the content.

LaaDeeDa321 · 05/10/2023 10:12

@yogasaurus if it doesn’t apply to you then walk on by. There was no need to comment because my post was clearly directed towards people who consume creative content.

We cancelled ours ages ago

No, I don't watch it so I don't pay for it. I don't subscribe to Disney or Prime either and no-one gets upset about that.

NeedToThinkOfOne · 05/10/2023 10:14

I just binge-watched Boiling Point on iPlayer. What percentage of my individual licence fee payment contributed to the payments needed for the cast, crew, writers, locations, music licences and everything else that went into that- probably negligible and yet I was able to enjoy it for far less than the price of a cinema ticket or a box set on Netflix, Amazon, Disney et all.

For those who like to let the rest of us know you are choosing not to pay which is different to struggling to pay it on top of your Netflix subscription if you take the time to look into why the licence fee funds BBC content for all across the U.K., you might understand that it is about much, much more than just keeping Gary Lineker in hot dinners… Those of us who understand why we do, will keep on paying it.

Wiccan · 05/10/2023 10:16

We sign their declaration every 2 years . We don't watch any live or scheduled TV only stream and watch netflix . So haven't needed a licence for over 10 years now. Really can't stand the BBC so it's no loss .

Have multiple people posted that they watch live TV or iplayer without paying?

Whereas, I’m thinking of ‘stopping paying Netflix’ based on the utter tosh documentaries they put so much money into, which enables already very wealthy people to control the narrative about their lives and piss away money on glitzy premier events and parties for those people. That’s what my money pays for these days, not the third season of a decent drama, which gets cancelled once people are hooked…

By the way, it isn’t a BBC licence fee it’s actually a U.K. TV licence fee. Cancelling it is really not the anti-BBC rebellious-ninja-move, some people think it to be.

Edited

Quite. Suspect this OP wasn't looking for information but to start a "defund the BBC because they are all woke pinkos" thread.

And this is the bit where you realise you’ve probably consumed a lot of ‘BBC’ content even though you can’t stand it as Netflix offers plenty of it, along with content from independent productions who sell on their content (funded from original BBC investment) to streaming services.

OldTinHat · 05/10/2023 10:27

@Mistressanne wightfibre.com offer rolling one month broadband contracts.

LaaDeeDa321 · 05/10/2023 10:27

I don’t understand people who say they hate the BBC. It’s like saying you hate food. There is so much choice and variation. You may not like Gary Lineker but that doesn’t mean CBeebies isn’t world-class and worth the licence fee. I’m just listening to Woman’s Hour now and they are having an in depth discussion about the death of the female soldier who was stalked by her boss. Come back to me when your streaming service does that.

OhmygodDont · 05/10/2023 10:29

I’m the worst because I pay to watch Disney, prime and Netflix? Such streaming providers who would pay the bbc for their content should they believe it would increase their viewers.

I don’t actually watch YouTube but I was pointing out you could watch it on YouTube after without needing to pay the fee.

That doesn't mean I watch them ! You don't know me you don't know what I watch. I'm paying for netflix I don't get it for free . It's netflix choice what they charge for their service . I couldn't give any less of a fuck about the BBC .

More like saying you hate a particular supermarket. There are many services you could subscribe to. I don't care for children's programmes as I don't have a young child.

Hecate01 · 05/10/2023 10:48

I think the BBC should be optional like Sky or Netflix. If you pay you get the service but if you don't watch the BBC then you can have the chance to opt out.

Times have moved on since the concept of the tv licence so we shouldn't be made to buy it in order to watch any form of tv.

BarborousBarbra · 05/10/2023 10:53

Literally the only thing I ever consume on the BBC these days is Inside No.9 when that's on. I'm still paying the licence fee as I used to value the BBC a lot, but there really isn't anything that feels like it's for me anymore.

LaaDeeDa321 · 05/10/2023 10:55

As long as you pay for the BBC you do watch that’s ok @BarborousBarbra A lot of the BBC isn’t for me either. That’s kind of the point of it.

WillowCraft · 05/10/2023 10:58

BBC is one of the few decent British things we have left, everything else that used to be a source of pride (our democracy, the NHS, railways etc) has descended into an embarrassing barely functioning state. The BBC is respected around the world and gives us a lot of soft power. It should be funded from taxes not from a TV licence.

The TV licence makes no sense to me - lots of people who ought to have one just don't bother, it's complicated as to whether you actually need one, it doesn't include radio use which is the best part of the BBC, it makes the BBC produce rubbish entertainment programmes to appeal to the masses, when they should be doing stuff that no one else will do.

I get that, but surely there should be more than one thing a 30-something like me could watch? It's all light entertainment, property shows and cookie-cutter crime shows and the documentaries are all been there done that. I don't know how much longer I can justify paying the licence fee for one show which is ending soon anyway!

I find the documentaries very dumbed down....they seem to avoid using any long words. They were better in the olden days!

I totally agree! I used to be an avid BBC documentary watcher, but now they seem so basic, and I'm absolutely sure it's not me getting more intelligent!
