What a nasty ableist post

NeedToThinkOfOne · 05/10/2023 07:23

Actually, I don’t think you need a licence for radio (live) so my example of sport on Radio 5 is wrong.

LaaDeeDa321 · 05/10/2023 07:23

@AvengedQuince i believe the BBC regional radio presenters were instrumental in getting rid of Liz Truss after their expertly conducted interviews with her. She thought she’d get an easy ride. Carry on watching rubbish online by all means but some of us prefer to pay for quality.

LaaDeeDa321 · 05/10/2023 07:24

Calling someone an idiot is not ‘ableist.’ You are ridiculous @AvengedQuince

What? 😕 Where did I mention Liz Truss or what I choose to watch?

Not a helpful post.

‘subscription’ (as in ‘to Netflix’) is just another word for licence in the broadcasting context, so not just a BBC thing.

Calling someone an idiot because of a spelling mistake absolutely is ableist. Many people on here will have dyslexia.

LaaDeeDa321 · 05/10/2023 07:32

You do realise @NeedToThinkOfOne that these people who are anti BBC are usually the people who access their ‘news’ online? Netflix is only one small aspect of the media they consume. This is why seemingly normal people are developing weird views on things. Conspiracies and campaigns against MSM are rife and it’s damaging us all. If I hear ‘I don’t watch/believe/trust the BBC I just think that person is a massive crank.

You don't need a license to listen to BBC Radio (as it isn't tv....)

No, but the licence fee pays for radio.

The BBC, for all it’s faults, spends a lot of it’s money on news coverage - which is needed now more than ever. It also makes UK based documentaries, dramas and sport that are watched by far more people here than Netflix. (Netflix have finally started releasing some audience figures - they are mostly tiny.)

Having a public service broadcasting system in this country also means that C4 and ITV are held to account, and also made to news gather as part of their licence agreements.

When democracy is in retreat and the world is more unstable than it’s been in half a century this is really important.

If you can afford to pay it, and you use BBC or other PSB services (C4 ITV) then I’d really urge you to pay it.

Of course the system is going to change in future but for now it’s vital.

LaaDeeDa321 · 05/10/2023 07:33

It’s nothing to do with dyslexia @AvengedQuince It’s a common spelling mistake and an Americanism.

AvengedQuince · 05/10/2023 07:39

Do these stations receive a share of the fee?

Passepartoute · 05/10/2023 07:39

What are you going to do about the money you pay ITV and Channel 4 involuntarily through advertising costs added to prices?

OhmygodDont · 05/10/2023 08:15

If you don’t watch live tv or Iplayer just go online and fill in the I do not need a license form. If you’ve already paid for the year you get a refund too. We don’t get letters or anything and just redo the form if you move house.

We haven’t had one for ooo maybe 6/7 years now.

AvengedQuince · 05/10/2023 08:28

Thanks, do you know if the other stations are included in 'other services'? I find it a bit confusing as you have to have a licence to watch any free to air television but the money seems to mostly go to the bbc.

I haven't had a licence since I arrived six years ago as I don't watch television.

Orangedoris · 05/10/2023 08:36

@AvengedQuince it seems ITV and C4 receive a small percentage of the licence fee.

Halfemptyhalfling · 05/10/2023 08:38

I rarely watch live TV but continue to pay as I want to support British public service broadcasting. I don't like adverts and shareholders profits being the most important thing.

Ohmylovejune · 05/10/2023 08:44

If you don't have a license, how do you all know the content is rubbish?

We have a license (hubby watches tv) but I don't. I watch Netflix if I've downloaded something for a flight but that's it (I still.often dont watch it if I have a window seat). Main point of this reply though.....I wouldn't have a clue if the content is rubbish or not.

Cramlington567 · 05/10/2023 08:47

I don't want letters or knocks at the door. Can you not contact them and fill in a form to say you are exempt or something so you don't get mithered. Can imagine they could be perceived as intimidating on the doorstep. Don't really want that for my family.

Just watch Netflix, YouTube, Disney plus here.

Personally it was because it was rubbish that we got rid of the license we had a huge virgin package and paid the tv license but we where never watching anything live because I’m not interested in dancing in ice, Eastenders, tennis or any of those things on any of the itv c4 Chanel’s etc

Streaming services buys the bbc documentaries anyway, prime gets their own created as does Disney.

I’m not going to buy a new one just to see if any live tv is still crap.

Also YouTube as long as it’s not live I can check out clips of shows and the news still from all content providers without paying the fee.

Well I wouldn't subscribe to a service without checking what I am likely to use from that service then weighing it up against the cost. So you could look up what was being offered, or if friends or family subscribed to the service you could look when visiting their home.

LaaDeeDa321 · 05/10/2023 09:18

It’s so depressing that people think they should be able to access other people’s work for free. The creative arts is mainly staffed by freelancers and it’s tough to make a living. You people want to watch their work but don’t want to pay for it. You are pathetically entitled people.

LaaDeeDa321 · 05/10/2023 09:19

You are the worst by the way @OhmygodDont Everyone else has to pay for content. So should you.

garlictwist · 05/10/2023 09:21

VisionsOfSplendour · 05/10/2023 06:33

So you live somewhere that no onr has a TV?

I have never had a conversation with any one about whether they have a TV licence, I can't imagine how that would be something you'd know about everyone you know. How does that happen 😀

No, they do have TVs, they just don't pay the licence. It came up in conversation once because we said we kept getting letters and everyone said so did they as they didn't have a tv licence (although they should technically, they just don't want to pay it).

No but correcting people's spelling in such a rude way absolutely is.
