To urge parents not to take their underage children to see the FNAF movie?

Ahsoka2001 · 04/10/2023 22:25

Today it was announced that the new "Five Nights at Freddy's Movie" has been classified 15 by the BBFC for "strong threat, violence" - https://www.bbfc.co.uk/release/five-nights-at-freddys-q29sbgvjdglvbjpwwc0xmdeznzy4

I know there's a large fanbase for the FNAF franchise aged 10-14. I'm sorry that they won't be able to see the highly-anticipated movie version on the big screen. But at the same time - as someone who works in a cinema - reading this news has me dreading the release of this film.

A 15 certificate means that NOBODY who has not reached their 15th birthday is allowed into the auditorium. This is enforced by UK law and applies even if the parent accompanies their child. No one underage being in the screen is a condition of the cinema operating. It's just like alcohol - sell alcohol to anyone underage, the venue loses its license and won't be able to remain in operation.

So, if I turn away your under-15 from the FNAF film, I am just following the law. Underage patrons being let into the screen could mean not only legal action against the cinema, but legal action against me - I could also potentially lose my job.

Many people think, "It's not like it's alcohol, it's just a film." No. It's treated almost just as badly as alcohol and other age restricted products. Please be kind to cinema workers who have no choice but to turn away underage customers. It's a shame I have to say this but please don't become aggressive or verbally abusive (it's happened to my colleagues before). I'm sure this isn't the vast majority of people but it's one of the prime sources of customer aggression in the exhibition sector.

Oh - and if your child genuinely is 15 or over, please make sure they bring valid photo ID :) If you don't want them taking valuable documents like passports out then a clear photo of these should suffice. The last thing we want to do is turn away people who ARE within the law but if we do have to...we have no choice and it's absolutely nothing personal.

Five Nights At Freddy's

A man with a traumatic past takes a night security job at a shut down diner in this US horror thriller. Scenes of strong, sustained threat and violence accompany an unsettling theme of child abduction.

@Ahsoka2001 - thank you so much, it's Odeon so hopefully she'll be ok if she doesn't get in. Hope this week hasn't been too stressful for you!

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 27/10/2023 21:58

@Chocolatecoveredshitpig when I worked at odeon we would always refund tickets in those circumstances. We would also accept ids such as bus passes so long as they had a recognisable photo and DOB.

Chocolatecoveredshitpig · 27/10/2023 22:12

@Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream - thank you; that's reassuring!

Chocolatecoveredshitpig · 28/10/2023 20:52

Happy to report my DD and her friend got in with no problem, weren't even asked for ID. They are now happily dissecting the movie in minute detail GrinGrinGrin

Cosmic47 · 29/10/2023 03:59

I agree, so many wet wipe types on here, I remember the cartoons from my youth, Tom and Jerry and road runner, prime examples, far more violent than five nights at freddys.. I watched the film at the cinema a few days ago, and loved it, my only nitpick was it wasn't scary enough.

stingster · 29/10/2023 19:08

I just chucked the popcorn onto the ground after being refused entry with my 13 year old son. I get what you're saying but obviously people are going to get angry when some bloody jobsworth refuses you entry when you've invested 60 bloody quid in tickets and popcorn. It's an effin movie made for kids. if you dont want people to get upset, ask to confirm birth dates when buying the tickets and stop charging the equivalent of a second mortgage for snacks. last time I ever go to the cinema.

BitOutOfPractice · 29/10/2023 19:12

You just threw your popcorn on the ground @stingster ? Are you sure you’re mature enough to watch this film?

Prescottdanni123 · 29/10/2023 20:04

@stingster

Winnie the Pooh was made for little kids but I wouldnt take a five year old to see Blood and Honey. If you knew that it was a 15, why take your 13 year old kid to see it? Would you take them to a pub and expect them to be served alcohol? Why make the cinema employee's jobs harder? They don't make the rules, they just enforce them and can get into big trouble if they don't follow them. I highly doubt they care that you are never going to be back if you are the kind of person who throws your popcorn on the floor like a toddler throwing a tantrum. Maybe check what the film rating it before spending so much money on tickets, eh?

Shocking behaviour. I feel sorry for your son and the cinema staff.

Or maybe you could have done some minimal research and known that a 15 is a 15, not a 15a, so you have to be 15 to see it. The cinema staff could get into serious trouble for letting anyone under 15 in.

I'm actually glad that this has been upgraded to a 15. When it was originally rated a 12A, I was surprised. And still wondering how woman in black got away with being a 12A because some parts of that film are dark.

I saw that in the cinema, I was shocked while watching it that it was a 12A!

This is interesting. Saw some Friday night at Freddie’s toys in asda: and briefly wondered if my 7 year old would want them. I hadn’t paid much attention to it at all (he’s never seen the programme or played the game), but where it was situated made me think it was a kids programme

Albioncreed · 29/10/2023 22:00

WIB was actually very scary! I remember DH and I being a wee bit freaked at it

So are bar staff who don’t serve alcohol to a young person without ID jobsworths aswell?

The amount you spent on concessions is completely irrelevant to the BBFC certificate the film was given. You can’t say it’s made for kids if it’s rated 15.

I feel so sorry for the poor staff at whatever cinema you were at. I really really do.

Im glad that’s the last time you’re going. If that was my cinema you wouldn’t be welcome.

I wouldnt worry about keeping your custom from them, you are almost certainly banned now anyway.

People have posted about younger people kicking off when they dont get their own way and where they are getting this behaviour from....ladies, I think we have our answer.

happyl · 30/10/2023 00:10

possibly the worst film I've watched all year
and I watch many films. Awful. Not even a little bit scary. Stupid wooden acting and crap script.

Is that the way you behave generally when you don’t get your own way? Spit your dummy out and make a scene in front of your child? Nice parenting. Your poor kid having to watch you behave like that.
You threw money at it and didn't get your own way so some poor employee has to clean up after you through no fault of their own. Wow, what great life lessons you're teaching your child. Hope your kid realises that you're the thick one for not checking the age limit and also how pathetic your entitled behaviour was as a result. You fucked up, made a twat of yourself and embarrassed your child. Mum of the year over here, well done Hmm

And is apparently proud of her behaviour and was expecting lots of "well done you, that'll show 'em!" responses.....which is even more worrying.

From dictionary :

Karen is a pejorative slang term for an obnoxious, angry, entitled, and often racist middle-aged white woman who uses her privilege to get her way or police other people’s behaviors.

Nothing to suggest you are racist@stingster and you haven’t mentioned your ethnicity but you are certainly ticking all the other boxes.

I watched FNAF last night, it's definitely not suitable for children and to be honest neither are the games. To the person who acted like a at the cinema, if you're that desperate to for your kid to watch it, put it on at home, that's what we did.
